Because supports were forced to buy it which reduced their agency.

Riot is really sensitive to the issue of support agency because they want the position to be as popular as other positions. Support has always been the least popular position. The popularity disparity between positions hurts matchmaking and it's one of the reasons autofill is so common. Not only that, but I think as players the design team also wants all the positions to be fun and have agency because they want to have fun playing their own game.

Jungle had trackers knife, which could have been subbed. In fact, they could build both. AND THEY ROAMED. In regards to macro (not bot lane micro) Roaming warders > non-roaming. Jsing.

I built it because I needed the vision and it gave item active cdr.

The thing is though that supports were not actually forced to buy it. Sure it was considered the best build path to rush sightstone in high elo, but I would say that the majority of supports in low elo chose not to rush it or even build it at all sometimes and they did perfectly fine in games. Heck, I climbed all the way to Gold 1 playing support last season and I never built sightstone once in my life (because I personally detest the item).

Imo the support item changes that merged sightstone into the starting items were some of the absolute worst changes Riot has ever put out as all they did was limit diversity and force the warding meta on to every support player even if that was not their preferred gameplay style. It quite literally enforced a meta, and it's a large part of the reason I think you don't see as many players enjoying the support role nowadays as you used to.

Let me guess you also think adding trinkets was a bad thing.

No?

Exactly this, imo. Supports across all games tend to be the least popular class, and in League they also have the problem of not fitting very well into itemization, with many options historically given to them to make them more functional, rather than more fun. Sightstone is one of these items, and while it still exists in a different form, it's been made into a goal supports can work towards, and fused with the mandatory items supports always build anyway. Personally, I think there's still progress to be made, since supports are still constrained into buying the same mandatory starting items every game, but it's at least a step forward.

Khristophoros1 votes

Starting itemization in general is lame across all classes, not just support. I really wish they'd do a comprehensive overhaul.

Teridax681 votes

I agree with this. Itemization in general I think needs to be looked at from a fresh perspective, but if nothing else I think starting itemization needs to truly allow players to make some small adjustments to their playstyle without having to immediately worry about how the items they pick will fit in with their final build. Neither the Doran's items nor the alternate starting items achieve this, nor does itemization as a whole offer real choice.

Khristophoros2 votes

Yeah unfortunately it's just really hard to get that right without hurting gameplay. But I think starting itemization could be improved a lot more safely. It would be a good starting point.

Supports are broken, partly because of sightstone's removal. Bringing sightstone back would've solved the funnel strat.

so they enforced a meta of having to buy pots as a support if u buy a support item ? that makes no sense to me, to be fair though i have 0 understanding of what people are thinking when they play this game... the 50g increase to support items puts me in a slump most days

It got removed becuase riot has no idea what they are doing anymore, so they end up making random shit like this.

You know you had two options for a completed support item, right?

Tons of support players don't like the idea of spending 800gold purely for warding purposes, especially when it's an even worse issue at low elo where they don't know jack-shit about map awareness.

Dryditch1 votes

If I have 800 gold on my first back, I'd almost infinitely rather spend it on sightstone than a Kindlegem or a Forbidden Idol...

Sirsir3 votes

Um, it got moved to the gold items. You trying to tell me non-support players (and non ward hoppers) ever built sightstones?

Because "supports".

Ok sure but why2 votes

I just miss the 20% item cdr from Ruby Sightstone and having my Twin Shadows on my support item

good times

Because pros are too good when they have too much vision available to them.

Pro Play was undoubtedly the Largest Reason behind the change. But tbh I'm happy that the starter support items basically have it built in now. Far too often somebody would get auto-filled to support and straight up refuse to build it. They'd finish the one starter support item and then couldn't be bothered to build a 2nd support-esque item. Then teammates would constantly get caught due to lack of vision. Having it built into the starter Support items definitely helped reduce such behaviour.

I'm not happy that you have to complete the dumb quest to get your vision online though. The quest was fine for the bonus passives, but to activate your vision is still irritating. Even still I've had games where I've fully maxed out the item, and then it basically "froze" in terms of gold production, and the sightstone never came online.

It could definitely use some tweaking I agree.

I miss Tracker's Knife.

Playing Ivern isn't the same anymore.

Removing trackers knife was a war crime IMO. My Lee Sin and Jax plays have never been the same since.

Because supports weren't fucking getting them.

Good news! Every support gets them now!

I wish. You'd be amazed, and horrified, how many auto filled "suports" buy the first item then simply never upgrade it. Even worse they'll even outright sell spell thief for cash post lane so they can CS.

TBH I wouldn't be that surprised lol I've seen some shit that makes me question the quality of this game's general playerbase.

We also have Sightstone’s effective function, only with a quest or purchase.

Why else?

You can read the patch notes in which Riot removed it, where they've given an explanation. On the other hand, forcing supports to start with a Sightstone means very narrow support choices that didn't have to worry about their damage or other forms of utility (not just vision). Tying the Sightstone active to a quest for T1+ support items you already buy saved them a slot and 800 gold and removed super early gank protection and bot lane coverage (on top of having your ward trinket up).

These things allowed Lux, Zyra, Pyke, etc supports to even be a thing, without feeling like they have to suffer in the damage apartment by having being forced to opt into early vision OR prioritize damage over vision and put their team at a severe disadvantage.
