I'm gonna try my hand at split pushing as it's a VERY viable strat in low elo so I am looking for suggestions/tips on champ select, builds and specific strats, any help would be MUCH appreciated! I am leaning towards 
, and I would be doing this via top/Jungle.
Not exactly a professional league player, but I would usually build Banner of command, zz'rot portal, and then whatever other core items your champion needs to be able to 1v1 a person coming back to defend. As for strategies: Make sure to place a fair amount of wards down, so you can leave if enemy team decides to walk through jg. Would also group up in teamfights, so you don't look like a total jerk just hitting tower while your team gets destroyed and you lose the game.
When it comes to splitpushing and splitpushing alone, no one is better at it than Tryndamere. Good waveclear (better with shiv), excellent dueling and tower diving, high survivability when doing it due to his ultimate and his E which lets him go through walls, very fast turret taking due to his build. He has basically everything you'd want in a splitpusher... except the ability to teleport into a team fight and contribute, lol.
If you just want to cheese lane with ignite and splitpush to victory Tryndamere is very good, but if you want a more versatile champion who can still team fight:
All three are very strong picks at the moment and can splitpush well and contribute in team fights.
