I'm not a fan of Feast-or-Famine Champs.

Champs like Riven Darius Fiora Yasuo (I'm gonna leave out Akali, since I haven't see her in quite the while)

They are aggressively played, mainly for the purpose of getting ahead. Now I know what you're thinking "Of course I want to get ahead, Duh" but these champs are inherently forced into an aggressive play style, just to be considered part of the game.

These champs can't just play passive, to what I have seen, others may have seen different, because early game is what makes or breaks them. They have to get ahead to stay relevant, and when they do, they start to seem oppressive.

Being forced into an aggressive role, makes hard counters worse for these champs, since their main strategy is going all out on yo ass, trying to get ahead. This can make games feel like they've already been lost, since they just picked a better champ.

I get that their kits force this role upon them, but I don't think it's a healthy relationship between the champ and the player.

From your definition it sounds like any early game champion is feast or famine... which ignores the middle ground.

An early game champion needs to establish a lead on their opponent to maintain strength on them throughout the midgame and earn the win before their late game opponent beats them by virtue of being a later-game champion.

The way it goes is either:

  1. Early game champion wins matchup hard, goes on to carry against the whole team and wins before 30 minutes (assuming teams weren't lopsided elsewhere)
  2. Early game champion wins matchup slightly, match stays relatively even and winning team is whoever had the better 4 allies (often ends around 30-40min)
  3. Early game champion goes even or loses matchup, gets massively outscaled and loses game (could be any length of game, only gets worse as it goes on).

The middle ground is a relatively even game where the 'feast or famine' champion is doing neither, it's simply getting a little to eat to make up for the difference in late game power proportionally. It just happens to be feast or famine more often because at lower elo's (or maybe all of solo queue) players don't explicitly change their playstyle based on when their team has a powerspike and refuse to play passive when in the enemy power spike and push advantages during their power spike.

Fiora? Yes. Riven, Yasuo, and Darius? No.

Riven can still build defense and CDR for more uptime on W and 3rdQ. Darius can build beefy anyway and rely on Randuin's/FH to debuff the divers while peeling them off with EW. Yasuo still brings the utility of his WW and elongating CC duration on R. Even if he can't kill people easily, he can still protect his team and possibly get off a nice initiation for them with Q.

That's not to say they are great peelers or bodyguards. They suck, but they can still perform ok in that regard. Yasuo and Fiora literally have no use if they have no damage.

Fiora has no cc. Her playstyle is exactly the same as ahead when behind except she's just not effective. She wants to try to clean up a fight and finish people off with her R.

Personally I play a LOT of Riven, and never feel forced into an aggro playstyle. Examples are against Darius , Gnar and Kennen I play passive and focus on CS and roams. I believe what you are suggesting is specific to one champ Fiora? and even she can farm and be fine in 1v1 mid game, she isn't an impactful 5v5/3v3 champ IMO unless super fed, because of her kit, it is suited for 1v1s almost exclusively (makes sense since she is the GRAND DUELIST). Mostly I see newer/inexperienced players who feel forced to play a champ a certain way, if so that champ probably doesn't fit your playstyle and you should look for a better match

Let me tell you something, Riven is not really a feast or famine champ. If you don't get ahead, and even if you are slightly behind, you can still be relevant by making smart plays.

Feast or famine champs are barely capable of outplays, and rely solely on getting ahead to get items and become unstoppable, or risk being almost useless otherwise. I think the 2 biggest offenders are Fiora and Akali .

^ this I see rivens with her fking knock ups and stuns and infini dashes to do godknows whatever the fk she wants damage or not, she's gonna do something go tank, AoE damage, get a sunfire why the fk not

the feast or famine champs are the ones that got no cc and cant build tank and can only go in with no way out yes, i believe all 3 requirements have to be met
