Do you play with quick cast? Where you definitively over Iven when you cast the spell? You can bind keys to target on champions. So you could bind like G for your smite to cast only on champions if say a minion/pet/etc overlaps them to where it is difficult to target. At least I'm pretty sure it works with summoners, I know it works with regular spells, but given that smite is the only one used on non-champions it actually might not. Hm.

im confused are you saying i can have smite bound to two different keys one for specifically champions and one for whatever?

I just tested it. You bind a key to target champions only. Say you bind it to T. If you are holding down the T key, no targeted actions can target non-champions. That includes auto attacks, smite, and other targeted spells like Annie Q or Ryze W. So say you are holding down the T key and trying to land snare on Ivern who his hiding right under his Daisy. Unless you actually have him targeted, the spell won't cast. When you can do an offensive action, the cursor changes to the red sword.
