And you can! (for a fee)

Nope, you have to play other champions to get mastery 7 on Lulu. :^)

If that doesn't show how stupid the Mastery 6+7 idea Riot came up with is, idk what will.

Ralimak2 votes

You do not have to play other champions the get mastery levels on Lulu. As Riot stated in the announcement page, they always planned on shipping the "Champion-Shards-Only" chests with the mastery system (in testing on the PBE now, to be shipped in the 6.11 patch), but they wanted to get the new levels out as soon as they could so they released that before the new chests.

Riot gives you 2 options. One is free, one is pay. To get it for free, you have to grind. To get it immediately, you have to pay.

I see nothing wrong with this for a free-to-play game.

I mean, look at Warframe, which is a farmer's wet dream and nightmare at the same time.

Grinding is one thing, being entirely based on luck is very much another. I'd be fine with grinding out my mastery, just like how mastery 1-5 requires grinding out games to get there, but the fact my ability to show dedication to a champion is restricted by a system completely out of my control is not even remotely enjoyable.

They will be releasing "Champion-Shard-Only" chests for purchase with IP/RP in the 6.11 update. It's already in the PBE.

I spoke to this elsewhere, but an IP requirement has the same problems as an RP requirement, it's just at a lower magnitude since IP is an easier resource to obtain.

It's seriously bull. I had lvl 5 mastery with Annie from a while back. Played two games because she was a counter pick. Bam! Lvl 6 mastery... it made me feel dirty.

Only way you can get master 7 on lulu is if you play on lulu lol...

what?

Trashlord Kayden53 votes

no bc you have to get chests for champ shards to disenchant for blue essence. lulu mains already have their S chest for lulu so can't get it by playing lulu, actually.

They're adding in a way to get shards with IP in a future patch. Just be patient.

This doesn't actually solve the core problem here, which is that mastery of a champion is still gated by something completely unrelated to that mastery. The current implementation is obviously unacceptable, requiring RP to get any reasonable amount of mastery, but allowing IP really doesn't solve anything as comprehensively as I think people want.

Each champion shard, when disenchanted, is worth somewhere in the ballpark of 200-400 blue essence. This means that every mastery level will require roughly 2-3 champion shards, and depending on the cost this can add up.

Let's say that each champion shard costs 1000 IP, right? This means that every mastery level costs 2000-3000 IP, and if we assume an average IP gain of 80 per game this means every mastery level takes about 25-37.5 games in addition to the mastery totals already gained beforehand.

You know what would be a more organic way to do this? Disenchanting mastery tokens into white essence that can then replace blue essence in the recipe for mastery. Not only does this encourage playing the champion well for longer, it means that champion mastery can be earned exclusively by dedicating oneself to a champion and playing that champion well. Isn't that the entire point of Champion Mastery to begin with?

dunkeroni7 votes

I'm sure you can get 1000-2000 IP by playing that champion if you want. Don't most CHAMPIONS cost more than that, and by the mechanics of how purchasing things works, THAT has is completely unrelated to the champion as well.

Essentially what you've suggested is that getting S rank on any champion allows you to upgrade the champion you want with 'white essence', which again is unrelated to the champion.

The way it is now, you can get up to mastery 5 by just playing the champion, after that you need to get S ranks. You could just keep playing that champion if you want, but it won't get you 6-7 any faster after you already have your S tokens. For that you have to actually decide that you WANT that champion to get mastery 6-7 by spending something that is untied to that champion specifically. This means you can't automatically get mastery 6-7 on every champion that you play enough, because those mastery points should indicate that you not only are good, but you want to show it off on that champion more than any others. This means that players with higher masteries actually like the champion enough to upgrade it, instead of just showing that they play enough to accrue a huge pile of mastery points (like with lv 5 masteries).

In short: If mastery 6-7 had the same progression as every other mastery (or some bastardized version where you earned points to be converted into other points by playing the same champion), then it would be just as meaningless as mastery 5. The way it is now, higher masteries are actually something precious that you have to choose above other masteries.

If White Essence is gained by disenchanting mastery tokens, it becomes a self-contained system. I may not need mastery with that particular champion to obtain the white essence requirement, but I still need the tokens specific to that champion. My ability to play the game at a high level consistently would be enough to let me show my mastery, and would be far more relevant than my ability to pay RP/IP for the same result.

The way it is now, you can get up to mastery 5 by just playing the champion, after that you need to get S ranks. You could just keep playing that champion if you want, but it won't get you 6-7 any faster after you already have your S tokens. This means you can't automatically get mastery 6-7 on every champion that you play enough, because those mastery points should indicate that you not only are good, but you want to show it off on that champion more than any others.

What about people with hundreds of thousands of mastery points on a particular champion that don't want to spend RP or IP just to show that they are dedicated to that champion? Do these people not deserve to be able to show mastery simply because they aren't willing or able to spend high amounts of resources?

This means that players with higher masteries actually like the champion enough to upgrade it, instead of just showing that they play enough to accrue a huge pile of mastery points (like with lv 5 masteries).

I have thirteen mastery tokens that I can't spend because of the arbitrary essence restriction. I love each of these champions, but because I'm unwilling to spend RP (soon IP) I am not allowed to show that I am dedicated to them. I've demonstrated my time investment by accruing enough mastery points and I've demonstrated my skill by accruing enough mastery tokens, so why can't I show off these achievements?

In short: If mastery 6-7 had the same progression as every other mastery (or some bastardized version where you earned points to be converted into other points by playing the same champion), then it would be just as meaningless as mastery 5. The way it is now, higher masteries are actually something precious that you have to choose above other masteries.

Higher masteries are essentially only precious right now because they require spending RP (or dumb luck), which is a terrible way to restrict the system. IP has the exact same problems, but since it's an easier resource to obtain than RP it's at a lower grade.

It seems like it would be just as effective to require a couple more tokens per level and remove the essence requirement altoghther.

True story. I would have liked to see Riot continue to extend the mastery point requirements just like the previous levels along with the addition of the mastery tokens. Accumulating mastery points accomplishes the exact same thing as grinding for IP when it comes to this system, which is to prolong and stretch the time investment required for mastery, but it is a much more organic way to do it.

Mastery points are already set as a precedent for levels 1-5, it just makes logical sense for those point requirements to continue through levels 6-7.

I actually like that you can achieve 6 & 7 with relatively few games played. I'd rather see a lvl 8 or 9 with a higher mastery point requirement. Then it's kind of like:

(5) Anyone can get here with a bit of grinding, it shows you know the champion pretty well. (6/7) In order to get here, you need to actually be good at your champion. (8/9+) You're both really good at your champions AND a die-hard main.

It'd be cool to offer chromas of base skins for reaching a certain level of mastery.

From the Mastery Level's announcement page:

"We’re emphasizing a performance requirement alongside a dedication component (the time needed to unlock free chests or earn IP for the champ shards or permanent loot) to build on the original system’s blend of skill and participation."

The reason Mastery Levels 6 and 7 are gated by the chests and IP/RP is that it is extremely easy now to get the Mastery Tokens. Honestly, they don't really show mastery very well. Why? Because you can earn them in the Rotating Game Modes (particularly URF) with minimal effort and it's very easy for you to play a game with your friends and have them funnel kills to you all game so that you get those S ranks.

Even requiring IP makes it so you have to REALLY show your dedication to that champion - "I am willing to give up a full champion/runes/whatever in order to show that I have mastered this champion".

Honestly, it would probably be better if you could only use IP (not RP) to advance mastery levels, since that would really limit how many champions anyone could have at levels 6 and 7 (or above) and make those levels even more special and meaninful.

You know what else is already implemented as a dedication component, showing the time needed? Mastery points. Instead of requiring 3000 IP for a mastery level Riot could have just as easily decided that an additional 25k mastery points would be required to fulfill this dedication component.

It's the simplest solution and by far the most logical, and as per Occam's Razor the simplest solution is usually the best.

  • Step 1: Remove mastery tokens from rotating game modes if it's a problem.
  • Step 2: Increase the number of mastery tokens required if they can be earned too quickly.

There are so many levers Riot can use to gate levels 6/7, but for some reason they decided to use basically the most illogical method possible (RP) and are going to be adding the second most illogical method possible (IP) at a later date.

Even requiring IP makes it so you have to REALLY show your dedication to that champion - "I am willing to give up a full champion/runes/whatever in order to show that I have mastered this champion".

Is there a reason it shows dedication more to force the player to restrict other purchases (champions, runes, etc.) than it would be to require the same amount of time through a higher mastery point requirement?

Yeah, and they absolutely will add a replay feature.

And give us soloQ as an alternative.

Did you forget the fact that you can get chests if your in a Premade and one of your premades get an S.

LostFr0st4 votes

Only if you're not playing Lulu that game. If your premade gets an S and you're on Lulu you don't get a chest; you have it already.

Hydroxlic1 votes

Where did you get this information from? That's the mastery chest your thinking of, the 4 chests you can get a month are usually the pre-made group ones, I have Lulu's chest and I've gotten plenty well playing lulu in a pre-made

LostFr0st4 votes

If you've already gotten a chest while playing Lulu (whether your S or not) you can't get another while playing Lulu for the rest of the season. I got that info from the official Hextech crafting guide. https://support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/207884233-Hextech-Crafting-Guide You can still earn mastery tokens (obv.) via Lulu, but not chests.

Here's your upvote, but...

You come up with a different thread about this like every day.

Realr5 votes

Ok but I swear most of us tried the crafting system at some point. I know I did, and I got plenty of champion shards. And I'm like "whoa, I have these champs already, what do?"

Then this new mastery system comes out, and I use my champion shards to make blue essence for my lvl 7 Azir <3

The mastery system works really well because if you've been around long enough you still have a use for champion shards for champs you probably have already.

As far as gameplay goes, if you don't want to grind to get chests, then don't. Mastery level isn't a requirement, it's just an option. Personally I'd be more than willing to drop $5 or $10 to ensure I'd have enough essence to get 1 or 2 champions to 6/7, but something something different strokes for different folks.

Riot could've just made lvl 6 and 7 based off of masstery points, but then you'd see Boards spammed with "Riot put in no thought to this it's so dumb...btw wtf am i supposed to use blue essence for I have all the champs rito pls"

Auroramancer3 votes

Probably not what you want to hear, but Riot is who gets to determine how the mastery system works.

And they want you to be both good on Lulu (5 tokens) AND good on other champs (essence).

That's not even how it works. I got an S rank on 6 other champions and every single chest I got was a skin shard. Good on other champs my ass.

NichtHurz7 votes

Can't I get the Skin Shards you got and I'll give you my champion shards? :D

Auroramancer2 votes

As someone who owns all the champions and has opened about 11 chests, I've gotten about 4 champion shards.

...and of those 4, 2 of them were literally the same champion shard. Made it pretty easy for me to get blue essence.

In any case, getting the key fragments to unlock the chests for essence also just shows good skill, regardless of champion.

So you've got to get S ranks on your preferred champion (tokens), you have to win with them consistently (key fragments), there's a big time investment (key fragment drop chance reset), you have to be good on other champions as well (for chests), and there is a bit of a luck factor in actually getting shards that would provide blue essence.

The point is: there has to be something more than just "I spammed this champion a lot, and I still got rewarded, regardless of my skill with them". Anyone can spam Lulu and lose every game and make it to Mastery Level 5 and not even be good with her. It takes someone truly good with her AND good at the game as well to get higher than Mastery Level 5.

A Miss Fortune3 votes

Over 200,000 points with Miss Fortune, multiple hundred games played with her overall, and uncountable amounts of S ratings. Though according to champion mastery I'm basically on par with someone who only has around 20,000 points and maybe 10 - 15 games played.

Çhåryzård2 votes

can someone explain to me exactly how getting mastery 6 and 7 works because im still confused

like, the whole process

Firefox5091 votes

The whole point of this thread is you have to play other champions and get an S grade to get a chest so you can even begin to get champ shards to get essense to craft the mastery 6 and 7.

In order to get mastery 6 and 7 you need blue essence or the champion's shard from hextech crafting. Which means you need chests. You can only get 1 chest per champion. if you play nothing but one champion you can only get 1 chest, ever.

Meaning you have to play other champions to get chests to get essence to get mastery 6 & 7 which is completely retarded.

Ralimak3 votes

"Mystery Coin" - gives you only champion shards - purchased with IP or RP. Already on the PBE; Riot has announced they will release it in the 6.11 patch (unless there are major issues, of course).

ChaoticPinecone3 votes

Say you want the Teemo mastery. First you need to get mastery 5 on Teemo.

Then whenever you get an S- or better playing Teemo, you get a "Teemo Mastery 6" token or something of that nature. You have to accumulate 2 of them. In order to actually use them, you either need 500 blue essence, a Teemo shard, or a Teemo permanent. All of those can only come from chests. The statistically most probable way of unlocking the Mastery 6 icon is getting random champion shards and disenchanting them. It takes around 2-3 champion shards to get 500 blue essence.

Then whenever you get a S or better playing Teemo, you get a "Teemo Mastery 7" token. You need 3 of them. Similar conditions to actually unlock the Mastery 7 icon.

This thread is aimed at the point of getting chests. You have two options in getting chests - buying them or unlocking them through the weekly "quest". Since you can only earn 1 chest per champion until it resets, youre forced to play other champions and either obtain a S or have a teammate obtain an S if you dont want to pay.
