Why does immediate demotion happen at 0 LP?

If I get promoted, lose 2 or 3 games in a row, I won't be demoted.

But if I win 3 or 4 games, then lose 3 or 4 games in a row, hit 0 LP, and then lose one more game, I'm demoted.

Can we have one safety net game at 0 LP so we don't get demoted?

As a reminder, at average MMR, you will need 4 games to get back to where you were, for example.

Plat 4 0 LP gets demoted to Plat 5 75 LP, at 18-19 LP gain a win, you need two wins to get into promos, and two wins to be promoted.

1 loss should not = 4 wins

You don't necessarily get demoted after 1 loss at 0 LP, it depends on what your mmr is relative to the average of that division. I've had some harrowing unlucky sprees at 0 LP where I went like 5 losses at 0 LP without a demotion before, and my typical experience is usually 2 or 3 losses before eventually being demoted.

It sounds like your mmr is right at the border (or maybe slightly below) of the two divisions you're at which is why a single game is enough to cause the demotion, but that's not always the case.

I honestly have no idea how it works. The first time I hit Bronze IV, I got demoted after the next match that I lost. This time I have lost, I think 4 matches after getting promoted and still haven't been demoted (At least I hadn't while I was logged in earlier).
