It singlehandedly makes melee supports unbearable whenever it is decent due to giving them high resilence to harras combined with high sustain.
Riot did this 1 time in preseason 4 and all you ever saw was Leona Thresh Annie, so unless they manage to find a way for doran's shield to work on melee carries (or toplaners) without making tank supports broken, they will not do the same error.

You mean how it's all Thresh, Blitz, Braum, and Leona now? With Janna/Morg being optional non-tank counters to tank supports.

doran shield was broken because it gave broken stats: 100 hp, 10 hp/5 seconds, what wasn't broken was the passive doran shield was picked because it allowed you to sustain so much withouteven taking pots
what doran shield needs is its passive to be buffed to be a counter to ranged poke, it should be its identity not a "sustain item"
and don't bring tank supports to the discussion, they need a nerf.
The problem is.... When ranged champions are so strong people are BEGGING for dorans shield buffs. There is a massive problem. Dorans is weak as it is and after the stupid armor nerfs that seems like they will stay for a very long time till Riot realizes it was a stupid decision ranged champions will not only be stronger than melee's but will shred even harder than ever. Any changes that favor them, which is happening on an insane level in preseason will just make melee champions not even an option if you really want to win a game. Ranged champs lose their weaknesses and counterplay aspects while things that counter them have only been nerfed to the ground during this season and in the new one coming up. The "buff dorans shield" Discussion should change to "Buff Armor and Fix how oppressive and one sided the meta is for Ranged Champs."
On a side note, I would like to see dorans shield buffed slightly enough to make it stronger against ranged harass, but not too good that supports start running it. Buffing it wont help the massive list of problems about ADC's though...

Why do I see people saying tank supports are broken the only reason tank supports are more common is that tanks are no longer common top lane and Utility supports are seen as op and got Nerfed tank supports will alway be picked over utility supports unless you gut them which they dont deserve.support tanks need gold income items more now with relic sheild they won't get Dorans sheild unless you make it broken so it's ok to buff it now.
I disagree with the premise. Looking at the wiki, Relic shield was changed a little bit later in Season 4 (might have still been the preseason) to give flat healing on the proc which was more than the 2% total health in the early game. Between that, and relic being less expensive than Doran's shield, it might be worth an attempt to bump up Doran's shield some.
It gave great stats, and the relic shield/spellthief's/ancient coin weren't quite out yet. Once Relic shield came out, doran's was non-existent in the bot lane. In fact, two relic shields were somewhat common for a while. Once Relic Shield's favor gold/heal was nerfed, ADCs stopped taking it over Doran's Blade.
If the support items were removed right now, Doran's Shield would come back immediately.
