So, can we talk about malzahars new problems yet?

specifically a gameplay issue. A massive gameplay issue.

Malzahar is incredibly passive due to a lack of kill potential. In a single lane malzahar very rarely does much damage due to his abilities lacking threat; His EQ doesnt do much damage, his voidlings do quiet damage, and his ult does next to no damage. It creates a passive, boring playstyle that his previous iteration didnt have; you MUST passively farm, there is no aggression in this version of malzahar and he is rewarded for BEING passive. A majority of a malzahars kills will come from allies or people not understanding how dangerous voidlings are (which wont happen in a ranked enviornment. especially high ELO.). This isnt to say malzahar doesnt do damage, no, he does do damage. Im constantly in the top two for damage on my team following the successful assassin or very successful ham ADC; the problem is i just dont get kills without allies who do BURST damage, because i have next to no burst i simply dont have situations in which i can do much but pick off low HP enemies at the end of a team fight.

Now for a good question... malzahar has two relatively powerful abilities; his passive, and his fully stacked W. How do you alleviate the lack of killing power without breaking him entirely?
The answer, i feel, is voidling time extensions. People stay away from more than two voidlings, attacking them with AoEs and such or just flat running away because the timer is so low. The voidling timer is only just enough time to clear a wave, not to amass an army and flash engage (the only way to get a full group of 4+ on an enemy champion if theyre decent). By adding an additional 0.2 seconds to the timer whenever a new voidling spawns and adding an additional 0.2 whenever a voidling hits an enemy champion you create a situation in which malzahar can amass and successfully kill enemy champions with his flash ult engage. By adding timer extensions, you change malzahars passive farm back into an active push which behooves aggressiveness, but also puts his voidlings into an active damage role that isnt quiet.

Another potential change is removing the multiple voidlings in general and giving malzahar one large, permanent voidling (a voidling queen perhaps?) which consumes mana per attack. This large voidling would be similar to 3 voidlings mixed together in basic stats. With this change, malzahar gains a much less frustrating companion that gives him higher kill potential, while being more balanced in the jungle. As for his ult, with the proposed change, it should summon the smaller voidlings that spawn other voidlings AROUND the ulted target, up to 3 (one per rank) to give his ult a mucher higher lethality than it currently does.

You didn't even mention his E reset, which if done correctly, can be considered one of the most damaging abilities in the game. Malzahar is one of those champions that needs to wait for the correct moment to go on the offensive, in which a passive play isn't entirely bad. If he can negate his opponent farm with aggressive Visions, he's gonna win in farm and (hopefully) help carry the game. If they attempt to farm and are a decent distance away from tower, toss down a Visions with voidlings and watch the damage ramp up from a great view.

My point is, Malzahar's power isn't entirely from his passive or voidlings. People just still need to learn him to play him correctly.

Youre right, i didnt mention the reset because its more invisible power that adds to the damage but doesnt deal with the problem. Malzahar also doesnt win automatically in farm; not unless his opponent is silly enough to be constantly pushed out of lane. which, over around ten games, has only happened once against a toplane quinn who wasnt even level 30 and didnt run bloodlust. If you get a reset off in lane, thats good, but how often do you ACTUALLY get meaningful resets off? the ability is usually over by the time you finish your ult, or an enemy is just to mobile for you to land a Q. You either reset it after a second or two, or you dont get it off at all.

Malzahar does damage, this is undeniable, but he doesnt do burst which means he has very little kill potential without allies. His playstyle is numbingly passive; he isnt like nasus where he has the ability to duel and go ham. Malzahars entire gameplay revolves around not losing lane and dealing silent damage in team fights. He doesnt FEEL satisfying to play. His passive playstyle is not FUN, his entire kit is just flat boring. While on paper hes phenomenal, in reality he plays more like a support (more like a sona to be perfectly honest, only much more quiet) especially when he gets a raylais.

Another thing is that weak DoTs have a lot of their damage negated by health regen and are even more susceptible to magic resist than burst. I fought a gnar a few hours ago who, despite me constantly harassing with Es and voidlings as well as multiple engages, would take maybe 500 damage from a reset E and 3 minions because he ran health regen runes and greivous wounds just isnt in malzahars build path unless he sacrifices RoA for it as a first rush item. Without kill potential of some kind, malzahar is just boring and plays a secondary, or possibly even tertiary support due to the interactions between DoTs and raylais.

Ive had multiple people comment along the lines of "wow, malz did that much damage? I didnt even see him do much" a lot of the time i play, even screwing around with friends in a premade and doing malzahar support i still constantly do surprising amounts of damage because of how quiet and passive his kit is.

If you actually read the suggested change, i want to make his voidlings into either a single more powerful voidling (base stats of 3 and cost mana per attack to be exact - a voidling queen of sorts), or make his voidlings last longer while CSing or attacking champions (0.2 per minion kill, and 0.2 per successful champion hit). The silent damage in his kit is unavoidable, but that doesnt mean he has to have very little kill power. The suggested changes dont give him more raw power in general, instead they give him more lethality... which is something malzahar very sorely lacks right now.

I like this idea a lot and wish there were more people to upvote it.

Malzahar's voidlings do take far too long to come out, and broadcast their appearance, so any remotely intelligent person will back off. Casting q on a target afflicted with Malefic visions has always been difficult, and yes DoT magic damage IS countered heavily by magic resist, because the damage is divided up into smaller, individual ticks of damage that build up into something fatal over time--hence, damage over time.

It's too bad the majority of people on this forum would rather just scream overpowered, because they are completely and utterly unwilling to try understand how something actually works. Guess that's what happens when people think like animals instead of as intelligent human beings.

Im glad there are people who can reason well. thank you for the supportive points. The purpose of this thread isnt to say malzahar is weak, its to say he has very real problems that need fixing beyond number changes. Malahzars problems are many, and he is, on paper, in a good place; but what people see is not the champion as a whole but rather his slippery passive and his (once) very fast and safe jungle clears. Garen clears faster than malzahar now, and while he is still safe, the speed doesnt really warrant his use in the jungle unless youre counter jungling (which ive seen... once, to no success). The passive playstyle, the silent damage, the hyper telegraphed attacks, everything about malzahar right now is just boring.

What you describe is mostly true, but it's an issue about you not liking the champion playstyle, not a real problem in the champion design.

Try other mages, if you want to play something with burst, or adapt your playstyle and expectations to the champ you are currently playing ;)

Problem with that is malzahars problems arent a playstyle thing. Silent damage, no lethality, boring kit... those are all things that riot has professed to not want or like. Its not a problem with malzahars power level, hes actually decent. Its more a problem with how quiet he is and how unable to get kills he is unless someone all ins him with 5 voidlings or a bursty jungler comes and you just lock them down for the gank while your jungle actually kills them. The proposed changes alleviate that issue somewhat without being a straight numbers buff. even the voidling queen suggestion re-adjusts existing power to be a little more lethal without giving him much more than he already had.

Malzahars problems stem from the fact his damage is incredibly small - i mean incredibly small. ticks below 100 small. his Q is his only burst ability, and even it has low base damage and scaling for an immobile mage who isnt based around utility. As i said in the opening post, this creates a boring and passive playstyle that does damage, for sure, but doesnt do much besides act as an auxiliary support because your entire worth as a champion is your interaction with raylais and your lockdown.

That's true of all typical Battle Mages. They don't burst, they wear you down. Look at Karthus, Vlad, Ryze, Cassio, Swain. All of them have low burst, and relatively poor kill pressure if the opponent doesn't commit to a fight. That's intended, that's working as designed. But "boring" is your opinion, and the easy solution is playing something else. And "silent damage", I disagree. Space AIDS or a horde of voidlings aren't exactly silent...

(And no, Malza damage is not incredibly small. That's not true. He has no Burst, but his DPS is quite good.)

What hurts more, 3000 damage over 10 seconds or 1500 damage in one?

Cass has lethality - sustained damage in the form of twin fang, and even that does more damage when theyre poisoned. Karthus has lethality - again, sustained damage in the form of lay waste, and it does more damage when theyre alone. Swain has lethality - his QWE does a chunk, and then he follows you with his ult. Vlad.... vlad also doesnt have much lethality, ill give you that.
Ryze has insane lethality; he has very high sustained damage. Its why hes still a good pick. Something else malzahar and vlad have that cass, karthus, swain, and ryze dont is meaningful cooldowns. Their most damaging abilities are not on more than a 5 second cooldown; they can actually spam their abilities to make up for the lack of burst, this is the secret behind their dps AND their lethality.

Sir, you seem to be confusing low damage for sustained damage... theyre different. Malzahar isnt well thought out, neither is vlad. both are champions with low damage but high damage over time, whereas cass, karthus, and swain do decent damage when their conditions are met because of their incredibly low cooldowns. Vlad and malzahar dont do decent burst even when their conditions are met, because of how their kit works and how much riot took from them in their reworks. Hell, vlad even has nerfs on the PBE right now that take even more away from him.

How many times, as malzahar, have you EVER gotten the kill on a jayce, a gnar, a leblanc, a garen, a zed, a brand, or a lux alone in lane? Unless they screw up horribly you wont get a kill on them because of how HP regen and magic resist interacts with constant low damage. Let me give you an example;

Malzahars E does 80 damage total. Jayce has 5HP/s Jayve takes 50% less damage from magic Over 4 seconds, jayce will take 40 damage over 8 ticks; 5 damage per tick. Your most powerful ability in the laning phase is rendered null and void.

The reason why the original cass and the original malzahar HAD such high DoT damage is BECAUSE of how DoTs interact with defensive stats; you NEED that high base damage and good scaling or else your DoT abilities just dont do much damage at all, and they simply are not lethal. Malzahar is not lethal. He has no way to kill people 1v1 unless they screw up and try to engage him with a full brood AND his E AND his Q AND his ult.

NO CHAMPION should be ahead or even and BURN THEIR ENTIRE ROTATION to do less than 500 damage at 20 minutes. an AD GNAR out damages malzahar with just a black cleaver. JUST a black cleaver. An olaf clears waves faster and easier than malzahar, the champion who was the poster child for a push lane. All these changes, all this lowered damage, all this removing of a champions identity, it just ruins the champion. it turns them from something people love and like to play into... just another trophy in their collection of champions they never play.

Ok chap, believe what you want, but I'll tell you this. Malzahar won't be modified in the near future, especially not for a buff. His DPS is already good enough, and "not getting a solo kill in lane" is by no standard a proof that the champion is flawed. Do you often get a kill in lane with Anivia? Not unless the enemy is stupid and dives you while you still have your eggs, you don't.

I've said what I had to say, you're obviously not convinced, but I can't do anything more. I made a friendly suggestion to try another champ, because obviously Malzahar doesn't fit you, but ultimately the choice is yours. Just realize that your suggestion won't go out.

Anivia has burst... its actually fairly likely to get a kill as anivia, and her playstyle is NOT passive. Anivia is a utility mage; soft and hard CC along with some zone control. Malzahar has neither soft CC built in, nor does he have zone control. You have to engage on a malzahar with at least two voidlings up and then continue to fight him JUST for him to kill you, or he ults you under tower because his complete rotation does maybe 500 damage. maybe. Thats the thing about lethality; malzahar has no way to secure kills for himself but is dynamite at doing it for others. Malzahar support is quite potent because of his damage output and relative lane safety. you just rush raylais as your second item.

Need i reiterate this? Malzahar does do damage, the problem lies in that his damage is NOT LETHAL for the most part. He will constantly top the boards for damage, but you never see him DO that damage and it rarely feels like you actually DID that damage. Its an unsatisfying gameplay style that you are forced to play and could be alleviated VERY easily by reworking his W or adding time extensions that promote aggressive play. Promoting aggressive play and rewarding it a change malzahar desperately needs right now.

Well, he won't get it, in the near or even foreseeable future. Deal with it. Or don't believe me, your choice.

Your assessment of the champ is wrong, look at your own poll. The majority (6/12) says that he does not "perform quietly", and 10/12 says he doesn't need change. I'll try one last time, but if you want a champion that rewards aggressive play, then play another champion. This is not a condescending remark, this is a friendly advice, because you will have more fun with a champion more suited to what you want to do. Malzahar will never do that. Riot explicitly said it when they explained why they reworked him.

Now I'm out of here. If you still didn't get my message, you'll never will.

Also... 50% isnt a majority. its a split.

The idea is to e, send voidlings, then q to keep your e going, then waiting and ulting to keep it going more. E does quite a bit after being extended for like 10 seconds. Plus, your ult can take about half your opponents health no matter who they are (tank or adc). Plus his crowd control is great in team fights. I think the only problem is that no one let's the voids even touch them, but that's not a mechanic problem

His ult is 21% max health =/ 21% of 2000 is just 420. Most AP carry ults do much more than that without risk to themselves. His entire kit was reworked to revolve around the voidlings being a majority of his damage, since most people play back if they cant oneshot his voidlings he cant ever get them out and they dont last long enough after clearing a wave to go on to the enemy. Thats the main reason for the timer extension idea; to make his voidlings an actual threat you can make plays off of.

And his crowd control... a 1v1 suppression that also CCs the caster. pre-rework it was one of the most potent anti-assassin ults in the game, it is not any longer and is more a support ultimate. With a raylais, malzahar really is nothing more than a support who secures kills for his allies. Not a bad thing per se... but hes worse off by far than he was before.

where do you only get 21% Max health? At level 6 with no ap at all it can do up to 25%. Also, his q silences everybody hit, not just one person

Realisticly youre only going to get 3 seconds worth of damage off, maybe 3.5. If you get all 5 seconds off, thats great but its never gonna happen alone.

buuut youre right; i forgot that it actually had good potential damage. Its still quiet damage though, which is a problem. Even if it becomes very good, its not very useful in the laning phase where malzahar needs to be rewarded for playing aggressively.

I just played him and the biggest problem I had as jungle is while you ult and are guaranteed the kill, your team won't do anything and will wait to last hit. And as an ap character, no kills, means no ap, which means no damage. So by mid to late game I couldn't do anything with only having 3 assists instead of kills. And them we got rekt by their Yi who's team let him get the kills he earned.

I am main Malzahar Mid/Support on EUW in low Silver, unless you count the new Flex system where I usually get matches with and vs Dias and Golds, and they are so much more fun.

I say yes, Buff him!

Puppy eyes

Ok, realistically speaking now he has enough counters. You can even be inventive, take MR Runes Katarina, aggro, and you win lane, provided she communicates with jungler and wards or idk, roams and gives all your teammates a hell of a time. Or be a galio, a kassadin, a good Cassio, a good Corki, a good zed and build Qss, I even had a hard time once vs a 3x Doran Malphite mid... need I go on?

2nd thing is his Ultimate that can be interrupted in quite a few ways: Scimitar, Morg shield, Olaf ulti, Gangplank, Fizz ulti, Thresh abilities, Draven knock back, Lee ulti, any form of stun like Elise's, Bard's, Braum's, Aurelion Q once his passive is popped, etc... You have to position well in teamfights, and try to lock to closest high-priority target or go YOLO and flash ulti or Zhonya, which you can do only if you have good team communication or else you Pop like a baloon and they still didn't follow ( sights life in Solo Queue). He is really good at getting First Blood from invades or in botlane and catching players off-guard with his silent E and W DPS. Not once I popped some abilities and after running around for a few seconds I got a Double kill. It's the same rule of "don't chase Singed through Posion Trail" that you have with tanking Malz minions, but the best thing is people aren't fully used to that yet. A good opponent mid lane will not take malefic vision from minions, will not tank voidlings, and will kill them asap if you try to farm with them, so you won't end up with much. Think of Syndra who can miss all her abilities, but then just Pop your shield with an auto attack and Ulti-kill you. You will never burst anyone like that with Malz. In Higher Elos he most surely gets less rewarding unless you pick him as counter. He's not a Freelo, contrary to what some are saying. But he's a "surprise B*ITCH" kind of power spike in botlane and he'll keep on being one for a while until people asses his DPS better. Same applies if you go vs a casual player on mid that you can take by surprise with E damage that halves their HP in a few seconds if maxed first. They have to inevitably run once u get W+E going on them and so they lose cs. It's not like they don't have to run around all the time when vs a Karthus, Xerath, Cassio... with Malz you just run straight back xD

He has 0 escapes though, and if you dare call his passive that OP (well he needed a compensation), think about Yasuo passive and windwall. Q silence too short (If there's something to buff this one can be), so not enough to stop a gank either. Zyra's E, Janna Q/W/Ulti kock-back, Brand stun for example do a much better job here (thinking in bot-lane terms). Even Soraka's silence is better, utility-wise. Malz is predictable once you've played a bit against him. Thing about Malz was that he's not hard to play (right click abilities), BUT you won't make good decisions on him unless you've been playing League for a while.

HALF of what I said about Malz is also available for every goddamned other other champ though. Many render him as underpowered after the rework nerfs. Too bad I never got to try that one ^^ Malz can indeed feel boring at times. But I like him, and I think he packs a good amount of damage.

But I mean sure, why not buff him a little oO I mean we have stuff like Rengar, Kha, LB... Rengar.
