To say she is a ninja, Akali is stupidly clumsy

RedCyclone··105 votes·7,175 views

Her Q moves slower then her ult, making for some hilariously mistimed Q procs Her E should never be used in a fight ever because it bleeds energy and is literally a noob trap skill Hard countered by 75g by a magnitude that I do not believe any single item in the game counters harder

I get that she has a pretty damn oppressive playstyle, but it really feels that every change Akali got was literally a QoL nerf to just make her really frustrating to play to incentivize no one to ever pick her Akali rework when?

Akali is a numbers champion like Leblanc, Kassadin, Ryze, Vladamir that is either disgustingly oppressive or absolutely useless. Point and click to delete an enemy and the fed get even more fed. They can't fix her kit without a rework.

I've played Akali in 3 games over the past 4 days and won all of them. Laned against a Ziggs, and Ahri, and a Heimerdinger i believe. I was losing early game from poke, hit 6, roamed and murdered.

In one of my games i got my first pentakill i've ever Legitimately earned (arams and 5th kill feed from enemy dont count) which i followed with a Quadra.

In my experience with those 3 games, i agree. Akali is a walking stat stick in a sense. If she can beat you, she will. Maybe she's gotta make use of her shroud and cooldowns, but if it's possible, she'll do it. If she cant do it on the otherhand, then she's just a glorified damage boost for the rest of the team for whatever it's worth.

I feel that akali is one of my more favorite assassins due to the freedom she has with her ult to move through enemy backline or move from ally back line, to front line, to ally back line being assassinated. but as a whole, her mechanics are very straightforward to the point of almost being just a straight stat check.

Hexten23 votes

Melee carries are basically walking stat sticks, so its no different for Akali.

Sinlaire4 votes

atleast many of them have survive ability beyond "deal damage to lifesteal/spellvamp enough to not die. hope something else dies along the way." oh and "send prayers to whichever god you hold dear no one is bright enough to pink ward"

Some stat sticks have it better than others. akali has to walk through a lumberyard and hope she isn't sawdust at the end of every team fight.

Hexten12 votes

True. 75g counters Akali's shroud too hard, compared to other counters. E.g. QSS (1300g) or Hourglass (3500g) to counter Zed's ult.

maikokk7 votes

akali was never dependant on stealth unless she was behind and needed to safely farm under turret. her old w was a stat boost, now its a speed boost. pink wards dont counter any aspect of a good akali's play pattern. if she needs to use stealth, she got in the wrong position.

if anything, her w is a good way to bait out bad pink placement.

Hexten1 votes

Doesn't change the fact that it hard counters the shroud. Would be nice to have 4 skills that work instead of 3.

maikokk3 votes

if you think of the shroud for what it actually is, it doesnt counter shit. its for chasing/escaping. not being invisible. there is so much AOE in the game that sitting in the circle being invisible was never a good play. it wasn't as punishing when it gave bonus resistances but was never a smart thing to do if you could avoid it.

that said, akali is getting worked on early next year (ish) and the shroud is part of that. it will probably get rid of the stealth mechanic for a mechanic that doesnt allow anyone outside of it to see in. that would be cool. in that case it would be usefull in the rare case that no AOE casters are around, or if you have enough MR and only need to avoid AA's.

but lets be real. outside of a full rework akali never was and never will be about stealth. she is about catching someone out of position and beating their face in fast enough to move onto the next target with health remaining

you comparing her shroud to zeds ult as a trademark thing that can be countered was way off. its not even remotely comparable.

Hexten2 votes

If there was a chance to use shroud and they had no true sight around, I would to stall for cds, not to counter. AoEs have never been a problem for me because I don't let Akali just stand in there, I tell her to move around on the edge and you don't get hit.

maikokk2 votes

ok well, the part im refuting is you treating it like its a core aspect of akali that can be countered to nullify her like building zhonyas or qss does for zed late game. its just nowhere near that effective. and calling it a counter to throw 75 gold into one fight and hardly bend her power level is bad wording.

Hexten3 votes

Yeah you're right, I'm sorry if i worded it like that, have always agreed with what you was saying. I played Akali too many times (Akali main since March 2011) to know what to do when there is true sight around.

I'm just saying it would be nice to have an ability that is not designed like that.

A5W9VPIhgQ1 votes

her shroud use to be useful when it gave her armor and mr, that was the only reason you put it down in fights, because you know they will pink.

Decrit1 votes

At that point everything is a walking stst, isn't?

Point is, melee carries at least have to deal with focus fire, while assassins ( and expecially akali once she manages to kill a target ) have to deal far far less with it.

Hexten3 votes

Because I was saying Akali is a melee carry, hence the term a walking stat stick applies to her as well. Akali has to deal with just as much with focus fire as a Master Yi, Tryn or Fiora.

Look, you played against three of Akali's hardest counters (except maybe Ahri). So, they didn't do what they needed to do to farm you under your own turret. What you're going to find is people will start getting the invisibility scanner, making W completely useless (its speedboost wears off before the animation finishes, if cast in the cloud). She's one of the worst assassins now, especially due to the E no longer proccing mark (if a target is faster than you, you won't get the mark off).

So, don't invest in her too much; get Zed. Zed was accidentally UP for half a patch and got fixes to make him good again. Akali? Riot admitted that she wasn't OP during the last nerfs, but made Bronzies QQ too much so they gutted her.

I also don't understand how anyone even thinks she's 'just' point and click. Akali's tools are based around zoning, jukes, brush control, and using her ult as a mobility tool just as much an assassinate one. You can't 'all-in' blindly as her and her laning takes a lot of skill to survive. You can't just mash your face to the keyboard while hovering over an enemy champ like other choices. Those options don't exist.

The only time that's true is if opponents let you free-farm.

I agree with your entire post. I may have caused a little misdirection in my first post though, as i mentioned i only played 3 games with her recently, but i've probably got about 50 games with of experience on her. Not stellar, but solid.

Ahri seemed fresh out of the box new. like game 1 new if not a terribly intuitive player on game 2. She stuggled to generate even base levels of proper zoning you would expect to see from a proper ahri. barely manuevered for her charm, didn't line me up with minons for a free Q waveclear/poke, and struggled with ult placement. I got my penta this game and she finished 1/10.

Heimer and Ziggs seemed relatively experienced but also acted like they might not have laned against an akali before. that or hadn't done it reliably. Heimer had bad placement on his turrets. i would run into range, dodge their shots, place shroud, bait Heimer's blind skill fire, and kill turrets. move back to wave clear while heimer's skills are recovering and he's putting turrets back down, rinse repeat.

Did the same with ziggs. he was very obvious about when he was gonna Q poke, so i baited what i could, used shroud to bait out is his bomb field, and rush him for a Q proc. almost always got it. I had all 3 so concerned about tagging me and trying to find me in shroud that i would get them to waste all their skills on me, and i would go wave clear while they recovered. the slaughter began at 6.

My brother was also on jungle so any time i got them into a good spot i called him in and we cleaned house. As a whole, i may have had bad match ups but i knew how to play it better than they did, which is why i won all 3. and nobody picked up a sweeper. but by the time i hit 12 i was generally wining 2v1's and the ahri game i was winning 3v1's with good placement. shroud is only good when laning for zone control and advantage. after that it's value dips as more pinks and sweepers are bought. then it turns into what everyone else says it is. a mild threat and bonus as well as a 75g ward bait.

Yeah, this highlights Akali's key issue post nerfs. You are relying on your opponent's incompetence to allow you to have a chance to succeed. If they had been half-decent then you would've had a bad time regardless of your skill level, it's not something you can save yourself with. Before, at least, she could /survive/ if you were really good with her.

Until mid silver, I think, she can work well just due to the enemy being incompetent. But by gold, you get hard counterpicked most times and she's not a solid choice. Above? Everyone knows how to deal with her and she's a liability. It takes very specific compositions to justify her choice, and even then, there's every other assassin ever.

Bums me out since I've played several hundred Akali games over the years.

Kassadin Leblanc Ryze Vladimir all have reasonable counterplay even though they're annoying and they aren't really useless when behind(Leblanc maybe). Akali on the other hand is in a book of her own, since like OP said she's literally useless because of 75g regardless of how oppressive/fed she is.

Akali is not totally useless when there is a pink ward around concerning teamfights. With hourglass, she can try to all-in atleast one squishy before she gets CC and dies.

Akali had reasonable counterplay before her nerf. Her nerfed W was fairly terrible and was a good way to die. Her counterplay revolved around her abysmal laning phase (one of the worst in the game, even more so than Vlad) and inability to deal with CC with her dashes.

Now. Now there's just no point in picking her over any other assassin.

because something that was the 'meta' several years ago is relevant now.

You said before her rework she was balanced around her bad laning phase.....which never existed before her rework since she started an absurd amount of health potions to completely negate this "early game." It isn't relevant now, but it is relevant for your argument.

FYI, you're terrible at trolling. You're claiming I'm talking about the BRIEF time that health-pots were stackable (this didn't last even for an entire season)... despite me mentioning her W rework which happened YEARS after the healthpot stacking meta. So unless you're Marty McFly and just got out of a DeLorean, you have no excuse for this asinine argument.

But see, since I actually remember that era when health-potions were infinitely stackable... Akali wasn't even one of the biggest reasons it was removed; it made it difficult to deny her fully, but her early game wasn't enough to make it completely broken. There were greater terrors like Irelia who required farm just as much, snowballed as hard, and had an even softer early game.

GG.

Hexten14 votes

Her dash speed got reduced when they introduced the strikethrough to 'buff' Akali, (hint: it nerfed Akali actually in other ways as well, enough to be a thesis).

The rework won't even come in 2016, very late 2016 if Akali is lucky, but I'll wager sometime in S7 or when they are doing a major pass on assassins as a whole, like what they did to the ADC class - which again, not coming anytime soon, immobile mages are very likely next.

Edit: explaining further why the strikethrough is overall a nerf, looking at the absolute pros and cons.

Pros for strikethrough

  1. When the target is running away in a straight line away from Akali's dash, gains more distance.
  2. When dashing away to nearby minions, gives more distance between Akali and the enemy.

Cons for strikethrough

No control over the positioning, it sets you x distance away from target from the last saved location when the dash starts, so Akali ends up being flung into bad positions.

  • This is happens alot when a target is running towards you, not away. The strikethrough will overshoot Akali through the target, and she is left further away, making it easier for the target to step out of autoattack range.

  • Dashing to proc Q near or under the enemy turret is impossible to do now because it flings Akali into turret range. This hurts her alot more in mid lane because the lane is so short. This effectively means Akali cannot harass that well against enemy mid laners.

  • The old dash will simply put you on top of the target helping with gameplay clarity - the intent of the dash and where Akali will land is easier to judge.

Adds alot of unneeded delay to her damage through several ways:

TLDR: I'll take the old dash over the current strikethrough anyday. The pros of the strikethrough are barely put to use. (1) autoattack was always doable with the old dash, so the distance gained means nothing. (2) the fact Akali is going to dash 700 range to a minion is enough distance between her and the enemy, given how much it hurts her in other areas - this is not a good trade-off.

SourCustard3 votes

This is probably for me the best thing Riot can do for akali right now - is to completely revert the 5.9 changes to her ult and restore it back to the original one.

It was gimicky to begin with, a poor attempt to give Akali back her 800 ult range after the first dash assuming that the target is running in a straight linear line to escape like a bot in Co.op VS AI. But this is totally not worth it with the CONS it provides and honestly it is heavily outweighing the pros and don't know how it even past through the PBE.

I hate akali. I hate playing against an akali. She got stupidly op when ahead and was completely oppressive to play agaisnt. I was ecstatic to learn she was getting nerfed. That being said, I completely disagreed with her nerfs.

They should have nerfed her insane synergy with gunblade that gave her stupid amounts of spellvamp, lifesteal, and sustain. They could have done something about her mobility, similar to katarina. Or they could have nerfed her STUPID high burst.

Instead they made it so that her e couldn't proc the q mark. Which actually made no sense, you could tell it would just make her clunky, and it did. And you're totally right with the speed on the q, it's much too slow, and I say this as someone who HATES akali. The one range nerf on her ultimate was the ONE good nerf they did.

actually there is a lot more to Akali then just point and click, u have to use your abilities right. not to mention watching your energy so that u are using everything efficiently. her Trap skill (assuming you mean her smoke skill, which is W not E) is very useful as it makes you un targetable and is great when playing against zeds and the like. Her e ( which is the area burst damage ) does a decent amount of damage and yes does take a lot of energy, but her q restores manna if u hit the mark on some one then basic it, so you should be fine if u put points into her q properly. People seem to think going through the target was a nerf. You have control over the ult. It actually makes it much easier to juke. I actually prefer easier jukes over the slightly faster combo. She wrecks Illaoi and many other skill shot mages because of it. Her E is mainly in her kit to give her wave clear and extra burst. If you don't need it for either don't use it. They purposely made it a noob trap because she was too easy to play.

Hexten7 votes

Akali is a binary champion, so unless she gets her rework, there's no point in adding some tool in her kit that she wasn't designed for and screws her kit over when doing her job - which is to burst fast and reliably. The normal dash puts her in position to AA her target easily and quickly no matter what direction they are running, so its universally better.

Or they can increase the missile speed of the dash and it will make the strikethrough feel better to use, but it won't solve its problems.

it's really obvious when people who don't understand Akali talk about Akali. Her R going through targets was a nerf, it was worse than if they didn't have it at all. The end result is being placed in bad positions if you come up from behind a team (like a real assassin), is impossible to control, and makes turret dancing now impossible. Good Akali's could bounce right outside of a turret's range after 6, bad ones couldn't.

Now none can. It's good for getting you killed.

Agreed. Akali had the old normal dash for 4 years, before they changed it in 5.9. They didn't need to. Akali could always autoattack after dashing with the old normal dash ever since her release. The nerfs in 5.2 did not made it any harder to proc Q off with an autoattack. It was always doable even with Crescent Slash triggering her Q.

What people don't realise is that Crescent Slash had a much longer cd at early ranks at the time, so this meant she couldn't always proc Q with E all the time. Also, what separated Akali players from the bads was when to use E to proc Q and when not to. Because E takes energy, you cannot always use E to proc Q all the time else you will run out of energy after the first rotation and cannot cast another Q or use shroud.

In this case, the Akali player is forced to autoattack and it was totally doable. There was no need to change the dash to be a strikethrough. All talk of how Akali cannot proc her Q anymore after 5.2 nerfs were the skill-less Akalis' that couldn't simply weave an autoattack after dashing - they took E for granted and relied too heavily on that. She never had E proccing Q off in the first place and that was fine since her release.

What these 'Akali players' where complaining about was the dash range nerf from 800 -> 700, so it wasn't that you couldn't proc Q off when you was in range, it was because it was simply harder to zone the (mid) enemy laner - they just stayed out of range but there was nothing wrong with how her dash and Q interact before 5.9.

They should revert the changes to her R (Patch 5.9) until she gets her rework so atleast she has something in the mean time.

The reasons we needed the E proc change was due to other nerfs in her kit. Her overall fluidity went down over time because of other nerfs, mobility radically increased across the board, blinds and invisibilities became much more common. So the E change was the only reason Akali was staying usable; she needed to be able to reliably proc her mark since that was all of her damage. W was rarely even worth using by this point since all it gave was a neglible speed boost- trinkets made the invisibility portion useless.

The 5.2 changes completely ruined Akali beyond repair; we know this because her win-rate (across the board, into diamond) went from a healthy 50-ish down to the 40s and high 30s- the lowest in the game, at some points. The strike-through patch change actually was a net buff, she was more playable with the E changes.... but, still a mess.

Truthfully, I think it was the R nerf that killed her in 5.2. A 700 to 600 move range nerf is huge, and more importantly, at 700 range skills- targets still feel 'safe'; they will over-extend, they will be out of position. At 600? That option isn't there and almost all of their abilities can hit you. So it neutered her, in a way that strikethrough didn't fix.

On the otherhand... Zed and Kha'zix got nerfed by accident through the item changes, their winrate dipped down to where Akali's is now, and they got IMMEDIATE compensation buffs within two weeks. Akali was ruined last February, still no real improvement.

Let me walk you through what a nerf is, okay?

If something is worse than a previous version, it is a 'nerf'. If I say I could get a kill before, I could outplay opponents like that before (reliably), if I said it would juke better (the additional cast range certainly would) and now those things are not true- it is a nerf. Then you have issues where the strike-through portion locks up Akali when used close to walls: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/TVBuLKw6-attention-strikethrough-users-akali-fizz-yasuo

Your claim "OH, BUT UM. YOU DONT HAVE SKILL THEN, HAHA. THUS IT IS NOT A NERF" is asinine. There is no adapting to the new Akali to make her as playable as the old one; that's why her winrate through EVERY bracket including diamond dropped like a stone (from 50% to mid to low 40s). It's not just bad players- the best players in the entire game can't make her work reliably.

Akali is provably and undeniably worse off with all of these changes. There is no debate. There is no argument.

You will deal more damnage because she scales better with ap but her autos will do more and u can just spam e and auto attacks and It adds up. Her autos will actually do more damage with AP, assuming you get Gunblade and/or Rageblade.
