Is this game dying.

Not just in popularity but also in fun? overall enjoyment in league just seems to be going down. My friend hate this game now even my High Elo friends, most people stop playing or barely play at all. I myself have like half as much fun as I used to just because of how stale the meta has been for the last year and a bit.

Implying most of the people this would affect weren't already playing anyway.

Here's a relevant question: what do you do when your game is going under because you're shit at managing it?

You try to bring fresh bodies in the door to either revitalize or milk the game til its death.

Riot revamp the game every season now (though not its meta as well), so I wouldn't say it's just milking.

You wanna know what's like to actually milk? Assassin's Creed.

I thought about using it but I refrained from doing so, mostly because of the 3-studio-3-year cycle which got me confused about whether or not that should still qualify as the "milking" we're familiar with.

But hey, I guess that more or less still counts.

Riot has to make massive changes each season as a 'Carrot on a Stick' ploy to keep people interested in the game or hopeful of systematic changes the game has needed for years... Riot's basically stated this themselves.

Yeah, I'd call that milking. Go read up on what some pro players think of that as well. I'm sure it would be enlightening to you.

I never take pros seriously, because they are really just human-locusts swarming from game to game and ditch them whenever they can't shake enough money out of or when the game no longer satisfies their personal taste buds. Opportunists rarely have anything good and objective to say.

And really, what is the "massive changes" you are talking about?

I mean, they basically remake half of the game's in-game items every season, change the entire jungle every season, nerf and buff the entire roaster every season (whether or not it's fair is another question), and now there is a gigantic list of champs in the process of being re-designed and re-released, we also got the winter map back, we have new events (Ocean week is one among the most recent) etc etc etc.

The scope of Moba is only so big, what else can they even do? Or basically remaking the game itself (excluding meta) every single season still considered carrot on a stick to you?

I have my issues with Riot, in fact there are tons of them (mostly to do with favourtism and meta) but I still can see a clearly unfair "criticism" when I see one. And no, I won't let it fly because it really isn't valid tbph.

When your brand is dying you do not pour tons of cash in and proceed to increase the rate of output. You cut corners and cash out.

You " try to bring fresh bodies in the door to either revitalize or milk the game til its death" when you know you've got something worth a lot but are taking hits which they do every year which I also mentioned last year and the year before that and the year before that and the year before that.

Inb4 that next one comes just like every other year, the one who's passionate about explaining to me about how league has gotten so weak after riot stops hyping everyone up for tournament season. This game isn't, and isn't supposed to be fully functional right now. Now is when you pump out icons and stories and other fun things to get the community creating things to show off later in the year and say "look at all the stuff we did/look at what you missed out on, join us"

Its been fading very slowly over the past few years. If balance keeps going the way it has, the decline will end up sharper.

Game's not really 'dying' at the moment, but its definitely on a decline.

Its up to Riot whether or not it really ends up in a 'dying' state over the next few years. Definitely heading there though.

People have been saying that WoW is dying for almost 10 years now, and well, it's still alive.

So it's gonna take a while.

WoonStruck1 votes

Dying doesn't mean dead.

Most people agree that WoW is terrible compared to what it used to be. They're only playing it because there's no decent alternatives, and that fact that many people would rather keep committing to something they're familiar with than try new things.

Except that the actual conscience, outside of the failed Cataclysm and the fiasco WoD facebook, is that WoW is actually quite at the top of its games. It's not that WoW is bad and terrible than before, not exactly, it's actually because it has gotten old and thus stale because people have been doing and seeing more or less the same thing for nearly 1 decade and a half now, and it's not everyone's cup of tea to be enjoying things like that.

Oh and, nobody likes Gorrash, and people were forced to deal with him for multiple expansions. But that's another matter.

Strange how many people are moving to Vanilla WoW servers, then.

Like I said, WoW is at the top because everything else sucks right now and WoW is the biggest name that's been around the longest (combination, not saying its been around the longest out of any MMO).

They are literally popular because they are popular at the moment.

The moment a decent MMO comes out that isn't P2W, people are going to jump ship SO hard.

MMO market has dropped the ball lately. TERA got cucked by the publishers of Aion before it even came out, and is just committing to the 'bodies in the door' tactic. Wildstar almost instantly went under; same deal. BDO took out everything people liked about it during beta; same deal. Bless gave itself possibly the worse combat system in existence because they wanted to have both tab-target and action combat players involved in their game; they probably won't take off at all.

ArcheAge? Was going to be good, but its P2W as fuck.

FF14? Too easy overall, nothing really inventive. No reason to choose it over WoW.

If any of these had been true successes, WoW would be nearly dead, like EQ/EQ2.

There are a few reasons why vanilla servers, Nostalrius in particular, got so popular.

  1. There are people who played the game for so long, they wanna go back to where the game was. Nostalgia-searching is not rare, there are reasons why people may go back to re-watch a series they'd watched 20 years ago or re-play a game from their childhood, this is the same thing.
  2. Nostalrius was in the end of the day, like other private servers which was free, people like free shit. No surprise there.
  3. "Old is better" is a cognitive bias that exists in every part of life. When presented with a new and an old something, one is more likely to choose the old, or at least give it significant credit and consideration before looking at the new counterpart, because of various different reasons, and most of which are not based in pragmatism. This is due to the fact "vintage" is within most people's evaluation system, where by the virtue of being old itself adds a few point to their judgement ("because it's old so we shouldn't be too harsh" kind of deal), hence surprise surprise old things are almost always given a score and recognition than they really deserve.
  4. Another cognitive bias, selective memory, is also in play. What do you do when you see something you don't like? You hate it and forget it. That's precisely what happens when there is a new thing and an old thing. The vast majority would only remember the good aspects from the said old thing, unless the atrocity is extremely egregious to be passed onto the ages otherwise it will be forgotten; the new thing however, still fresh in people's memory, so we have no issues pulling out and nitpicking every little flaws and mistakes like it's the hottest garbage in the world even though it's actually not worse than the old counterpart a lot of times.
  5. The last cognitive or perhaps cultural bias, "David vs Goliath". We always cheer on small guys beating down the big guys, and when present a story between a small and a big guy, we usually assume the big guy is the villain out to prey on or destroy the small guy out of spite or other malicious reasons. While it's unfortunate that Nostalrius got hit with a forced shut-down, but it's really just Blizzard protecting its IP, and well they happen to pick Nostalrius to tackle probably because it's easier to reach due to how popular/advertised it was to begin with. However people when heard the story, automatically assume that Blizzard is jealous or something, which while I can't deny there might be an element of it somewhere but it's clearly not the intent, and this also ended up strengthening all of the previous points mentioned just above, and that people think "WoW is going worse and worse".

Again, a lack of alternative could be a part of the reasons why WoW is still alive, no doubt. BUT it certainly plays deeper than that than just trying to base everything on it while trying to stitch everything together on the assumed basis that "WoW is bad and people wanna go back to vanilla".

The sole reason why there hasn't been a WoW killer is that people as a whole are getting tired of MMOs. Even if the dreamed WoW-killer come out right now, right this instant, there won't be that big of an uproar like it was back in 2004, it just won't happen.

It's not that WoW's quality is really becoming worse, it's just people getting bored of the genre itself while thinking that going back may rekindle the magic while cruising on all of the points I'd mentioned earlier.
