The Knee-Jerk Reaction on these Boards from ONE DAY of Preseason is Insane.

What I'm seeing as the top posts on the boards are looking at the Preseason from only one viewpoint and ignoring all the factors at play to make the system not nearly as bad as they would think. Some of the complaints are fair, and some are just plain insane.

Take for example the posts like this. This post points out a single case of someone playing 11 games with 7 wins 4 levels to go up to level 31 (not specified if they reached 31 after that 11th game or if they just played 11 games and only hit 31 on their way to 32). That level game them around 810 BE with a total of ~6 hours of play on summoners Rift, not including queue times or time just spent sitting idle in client. Right off the bat you see in comments people going on how Riot greedy company that only did this so people will buy champions with RP because of the grind compared to the previous IP system. This claim included the idea that "Because, I can guarantee you this. On the post-it board of each Riot office around the world, no matter the country is written 'Player happiness doesn't buy fast cars'". This is freaking ridiculous to claim that with absolutely no basis for the claim and only paints the company as some awful greedy being. Now, this does not dismiss the people's worries but it makes it difficult to engage in active discussion with those worries when people go into a mode of aggressive attack against Riot making those bold assumptions.

Some of these worries are valid and actually should be looked at, those worries include: The horrible feeling of being only a few BE short of that champ you want to buy and can't until you play another 10-30 games depending on level. (Argument used for wanting BE with each game, something I personally agree with even if it's just a small amount.) The current balance of the game being unfavorable to the posters (granted, most people could present these in more constructive ways so Riot knows specifically what in the game is causing this feeling). A feeling of over-emphasis on first win of the day making those who play large amounts of games a day feel less meaningful. The feeling of RNG in the system since the amount of BE is not consistent.

These are all valid complaints with easy to see reasons or being ones that are just feelings of the system which are objective. These complaints deserve attention and discussion.

Some of the complaints which are not valid (typically due to looking only at one factor/scenario), and I'll explain why for each one:

The system is punishing to older players due to the grind required being more difficult - This argument typically looks at the case of how many games it took to level up from 30-31 and show the amount of BE given, then go on to say how the IP given for those same games would have been higher by about 10-15% is the range I'd see in most of the posts. The problem with this argument is that should one get a champion shard for a champion they would like to buy, then they can keep that shard and use it to purchase their champion at a discounted price, though not enough to exactly justify the difference in BE gains to previous IP gains. However there are more factors, such as considering the overall amount of time it would take to grind out what is considered necessary for success in the game from the current system and the previous system of IP. Before, this grind would be beyond champions and include Runes and Rune Pages creating a huge amount of grinding for IP to include those runes especially if you play a champion that needs specialized rune pages for optimal success. In the current system, champions are the ONLY thing needed to purchase for overall success in the game. Let me reiterate, CHAMPIONS ARE NOW THE ONLY THING NEEDED TO BUY IN ORDER TO SUCCEED IN THIS GAME. This one simple fact makes the overall BE needed drastically less to succeed in the game, making the time needed to grind out that category less. Yes, going for individual champions will take longer now, but going for purchasing all possible things to make that champion succeed in your games is far less.

The balance of the game is atrocious and the new system is garbage - This one is far more knee-jerk than it is misleading. I haven't played yet on the latest patch so I don't know if the game is that unbalanced, but to look at the system and call it garbage is a knee-jerk. It's expected that with preseasons the game will be unbalanced, that's normal. It takes time and a few patches to get things ironed out. Usually the first patch after will have the big outliers (from what I hear Dark Harvest, Triforce Users, Ez in general, and Press the Attack) adjusted then do smaller adjustments later on.

Just calm down people and go for actual, rational discussions if you want things to improve.

This is why I recommend shit storm umbrellas.

I sell them, but they are costly.

Knowing Ritos track record of assessing and tending to things when they should, the reaction is justified.

The "REEEEE new runes are unbalanced" is definitely knee-jerk. Half the runes straight up suck, like most of the tank runes. Lethal Tempo, Press the Attack, and Dark Harvest are pretty nasty though. Half of the salt (As usual) is just silver players screeching because they don't want to adapt. I haven't seen any crazy one-shotting like they complain about.

Started season 1 then stopped. Started playing again this August after 18 months. I left b/c of imbalances and servers issues, having afk's in almost every rank game----32 in 28 games in a roll. They finally fixed that mostly. RIOT has done a lot of good; they are a smart business, but I think they are making a mistake with the new runes and mostly the BLUE ESSENCE and UNLIMITED LEVEL'ing. This is something a cash cow game would do to hold players long as possible before it is irrelevant. They are looking at WOW and thinking we can keep players forever if the players feel like they are accomplishing levels. Old game design psychology. Not innovative at all, and usually ruins games.

Just got a couple friends into the game. They are completely overwhelmed and are gamers. I only play on occasion b/c life of adulthood. How can new players who have lives ever be able to play this game? RIOT needs to look at market strategy to bring more players in to make money rather than trying to milk the remaining diminishing players they have.

These runes are a mess. Some are OP, some are garbage,. The old runes it was nice to add health, sorcery, and utility unto a mage support without having to go straight tank tree. Now I get two options---eh, one and a quarter options. This simplify having to pay for them, which has been spoken to death for RIOT to stop, but with all the new random abilities they do (crap flying around the screen) it's more we have to memorize. Is RIOT considering this game a sinking ship not caring about the marketing and bringing in new players?
