Riot's Banning of Custom Skins: How Does this Affect the Community?

It has come to my attention that Riot has made plans to change their game's files in order to allow detection of 3rd party skins, better known as custom skins. Anyone using any custom skins is likely to be banned for using 3rd party systems.

It doesn't effect me personally, but I can imagine how it could effect anything from a common player to top-name League players on youtube. It seems like it restricts creativity among the community and unfairly targets the small custom skin creating community for no really significant reason. I really don't believe that too many custom skins cause real balance issues or give them an edge (most probably do the opposite tbh with bad hitboxes) but would it be hard to ban those few skins. Do those few skins really create a large balance issue to ban out all custom skins?

As a quote from Lomar, a rioter (Note this is 2012)

"In our case, we've made a decision that custom skins/splashes aren't necessarily hurting the business. Our business is in making our players happy - the ability to custom stuff is likely what keeps certain people interested in our game, and acts as a force multiplier for other people. From that perspective, banning people is incredibly stupid. We're forcing people out of our game, and lessening the experience of other players, for no real clear benefit.

That said, it's important that we reserve our rights to defend the IP here. There may be certain custom skins (Nazi Teemo!) that we may have a legitimate problem with. And there are other modifications (Zoom hack!) that are a certifiable balance issue and need to be prevented. Custom creation will always be at your own risk - updates may break functionality, etc. But we also aren't going to just toss out arbitrary bans. It's not in our players' interests, and so it's definitely not in ours."

(taken from comment section in http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/rQypadRU-riots-policy-on-custom-skins)

I understand that the custom skin community isn't a large part of the league community as a whole, but hopefully others agree that this restriction of creativity shouldn't be allowed even if it only effects a small portion of the league community.

Thoughts?

this is old as fuck they did a patch just like this back in 2012 they never liked or supported custom/fanmade content plugging into their game and they were very public about that 4-5yr ago. they're even too stuck up to buy fanmade content when it's good, ie curse voice, the myriad of replay systems, and a lot of quality custom skins. if they can't make it themselves and have sole rights over it, they do their damndest to delete it off the face of the planet.

it's not enough for riot to succeed, others must fail. additionally, if riot can't succeed, nobody else is allowed to succeed.

Uh...I don't know where you got that information but the quote of an actual Riot saying "we also aren't going to just toss out arbitrary bans. It's not in our players' interests, and so it's definitely not in ours" and "the ability to custom stuff is likely what keeps certain people interested in our game, and acts as a force multiplier for other people. From that perspective, banning people is incredibly stupid. " was said in 2012...

and the article was posted today, the video was posted 3 days ago. This is very new and relevant information

i know that they did a patch like this 4 years ago because i was there and i was affected. all 3 of my replay systems broke and my game wouldn't start without bugsplatting if i used any custom skins. this is just riot's latest iteration of their 5-year-long anti-content-creator spree

I think it's important to highlight this part of the quote:

"Custom creation will always be at your own risk - updates may break functionality, etc."

as it's possible they released an update that wasn't designed to target your skins/replay systems but effected the game files that they ran from and so broke your client. Custom skins have been allowed since I started playing 2 years ago as I have a friend that uses them frequently

they specifically announced that the patch would break any and all third party implements

technology evolves, and the custom community got around the new folder structure at the time, which is why you and your friend get to enjoy custom content. you'll have to wait another 6-8 months for people to figure out how to break the new folder structure now

idk if you watched the video but at some point they said that in order to use custom skins after the patch, you'd need to change a file to another type and the system would immediately detect it. I don't think there's any recovery from this patch for the custom skin community

lmao u vastly underestimate content creators and people who tinker with files and metadata then

there's always a way to break any security system. code is only code, and it can be broken or circumvented with code give it time

In my 5 years of LoL experience I never used customs skins until a week ago where I installed a nice Jhin skin. Usually I always buy riot skins since I love showing it off to people around, but in this case Jhin has only 1 skin and its bad.. Of course I am waiting for riot to release a new skin for him which I will buy then. But until then I really see no problem with changing the color on one champion. I understand that riot needs to watch out for these skins, but most people use it for aesthetics instead of abusement to gain some kind of upper hand in a match. I will always prefer riot skins over customs skins and my installing a custom skin was only due to the lack of skins for that champion. Anyway, I don't really like them removing customs skins or giving bans out for them, I really think they have other important things to do instead of making a part of the community miserable and abandoned. What ever reason they have its not right to do without asking their community first.. Feel betrayed :/
