Friendly tip to EVERYONE who wants to play rank

lolipopevelynn··24 votes·1,761 views

If you are still copy pasting build guides, mastery setups, rune setups for champs off of google, ESPECIALLY if you "main" said champ, then dont rank. seriously just dont rank. If you really have so little knowledge about the game that you play a 48 min game as a tanky top laner vs 2 AP carries, 1 of which is in your top lane, and you dont build a SINGLE MR item that entire game because you are so dedicated to following that pro challenger tier guide on google then PLEASE dont play ranked. for the love of god dont do it and save yourself and others from unneeded frustration.

it doesnt matter what elo you are in, it really doesnt. if you are doing this then you dont belong in competitive play, period.

exactly, they are still learning. so what im saying is dont learn in ranked, learn in normals. ranked is a place to apply the knowledge you have learned and improve upon it, not as a tutorial playground

I don't get how that is different from saying "if you don't have diamond level mechanics, don't play ranked." People will eventually be put into whatever division fits their skill level, both in terms of mechanics and game knowledge, and games will be fair. And that's all that really matters.

mechanics has NOTHING to do with simply knowing how to build the champion you play. building item 3043 on a Rammus is SIGNIFICANTLY diffrent from missing a Q on LeeSin

Yes, they are two different skills. However, both are things you have to learn to get better at this game. Both have the same overall effect on your ranking - if you have good game knowledge you will rank higher than a person without; if you have good mechanics you will rank higher than a person without. And that is all. As you play more your game knowledge improves; as you play more your mechanics improve.

Why would one skill be required and another not? Because one ticks you off more personally?

i never said mechanics wasnt a required skill set. learning builds is the first thing you do when playing the game. before you do anything else you learn how to build. its the baseline for everything that follows, ESPECIALLY if you developed a particular playstyle then you need to know what does and doesnt work.

if you dont know how to build then chances are that you for sure dont have the mechanics to make use of a copy pasted guide anyway.

{quoted}

The OP didn't say you can't look up builds and follow them. What he meant is that if you do not have the knowledge and experience to adapt such build to the game and the situation, then don't play ranked.

Look builds up, but use them as a guideline instead of following them blindly.

pretty much this. i said "copy paste" for a reason and even gave an clear example. if you are copy pasting a build as a tank and you dont build MR when you are up against 2 heavy AP carries just because the build guide doesnt have MR in it, then there is a clear problem at hand here.

there are so many people that rush certain items just because its a popular item or because its listed in guides when the situation DOES NOT call for it. for example going 0/8 by the 8 min mark and still trying to rush build a hydra+ghostblade on wukong instead of getting something to help you die less.

I disagree. I wouldn't teach someone to play the game by first telling them how to build against specific comps. I would probably give one build path and let them worry about other aspects of the game while they are learning, such as last hitting and map awareness. Figuring out how to adjust the build comes with time, after learning what all the items are and learning by experience what does and doesn't work. But maybe people learn things in a different order.

Even if there is a 'best' order, why should there be a cut off point for ranked at all? The only reason I might try to dissuade someone from playing ranked is because their skill is so far in the depths of bronze that it will take them many games to get matched correctly AND they are someone who is likely to get discouraged on the way there. Ranked gives the best learning experience hands down. It offers better matchmaking and more consistency.

Uhh isn't improving upon knowledge kind of the definition of learning? Play ranked!

They do belong in competitive, but down in the lower tiers with me! If they are that bad by doing this, they will drop their rank and if you are that good, you won't have to deal with them anymore. So stop the QQ and just play and if you are that good and deserve master all these people will drop it won't be an issue.

Guess I don't belong in competitive play even though I was D1 last season when I played this game...Looking up builds for runes/masteries/items is a requirement for this game. You need to keep up to date with the pros that play this game who literally pay people to find the best build routes/items/masteries per patch. It's a free knowledge source to have the best chance to win...why not use it?

PS: It might help you climb out of Silver 3 lulz

Why would you use them as guidelines when it comes to masteries/runes/items... you maybe swap our 1/2 items end game depending on the way the games going and the runes/masteries should be identical.

Gary B Enkelis4 votes

If you don't have the knowledge and experience to adapt then your rank will reflect. It doesn't hurt anybody. It's just a fact. If you keep losing games and tanking rank, yeah your team goes down with you for the one game they play with you, but if they are good then one game won't matter and they will climb.

except its not "one game", its consistent among all games in low-mid tier elo. you have no idea how many games ive lost trying to hard carry as eve or shaco simply because players lack BASIC knowledge. im not talking about simple objective game knowledge, positioning, or playing safe either, but just basic BASIC build knowledge such as not going full glass canon mode on illaoi when you are 2/15.

basically lacking common sense.

Well, if it's consistent, then it means that those people are in the right ELO. And if they are in the right ELO then by definition it is correct for them to play Ranked at their current ELO.

but just basic BASIC build knowledge

It seems like you are annoyed because you think it's something super easy to learn so everyone should know it. That's great, you must have a great understanding of itemization that is almost second nature to you. I implore you to write a guide and point people to it, instead of trying to get people to just not play Ranked. I would definitely read it.

i mean you shouldn't need to follow a guide to know that you need to build survival items when behind. no guide on the internet can tell you how to build situationally because its exactly that, situational. you cant copy paste something that works only in one particular scenario/situation and expect it to work in all other scenarios.

i dont think you really get the point here. there are far too many scenarios that call for certain item choices for each champ. its not even possible to even make a guide for that many outcomes. its something you learn yourself from experience, no one can teach it to you except yourself.

I don't think you get my point. What I'm saying is that you think it's common sense, but it's not necessarily so for many people. Maybe you're smarter than other people, I dunno. I'm pretty new, and I wouldn't have known to build defensively when behind except after reading posts like this one, or maybe someone has told me in game.

then simply stop playing rank untill it is common knowledge to you, especially if you are new. its that simple really.

all I read was "IT'S MY TEAM WHO BRINGS ME DOWN I AM CARRYING EVERY GAME I DESERVE CHALLENJOUR"

I realize in low elo some people can be complete monkeys; we've all been there. But from personal experience, when people usually say "omg my team is horrible they don't do x and x" the player complaining doesn't do so hot themselves.

Just focus on yourself. Not your team.

I mean what he really meant by the original post. Looking up experienced players guides and builds is really useful and educational. He is talking about doing the same build every time against every matchup/comp. He didnt say it was wrong to copy better players builds or masteries/runes. It's bad to do the SAME exact thing without even thinkong about it. Like building frozen heart / sunfire cape first on malphite against a ryze just because some d1 streamer did it last game and not realising he built against an ad top not an ap one. He is talking about shit like that.

Just read what he wrote

Because Mastery Pages/Runes change a whole lot??? Items barely champ if they even change.

strut1 votes

Runes and masteries don't really change whole lot i agree but even with masteries i have several for my main depending on who i am playing against.

"Items barely change if they even change"

So you build the same thing against an ap comp and an ad comp. You start with the same first titem against an ap laner and an ad laner. So you don't itemize to your teams needs as support. So you don't try to build defensive when an oppressive lane opponent requires it. You just do the same shit over and over or maybe get something else if you feel like. I see

Nobody said it's bad to look up builds+masteries and strategies. What's stated is that you need to adapt to the current game not just rigidly do the same thing no matter what. Just try to understand what's in the post dude.

Also playing the elo card is fucking disgusting.

AcidTheWarlock4 votes

That's funny cuz most builds I've read give alternatives to items, ex. giving cheaper items for an easier powerspike then selling it off for your real core, Hexdrinker instead of going straight into a BF Sword....

The fact the person is in your MMR and does that means he deserve to be in that MMR with you cause you aren't any better... Let them play and grow from what they believe is best. You're not their mother nor have the ability to control them.

I just had Ahri support one game then an Amumu + Leona bot lane... Oh well, two games down, many more I shall try to win again.

lol no its called default mmr from getting carried on placements and its a plague to every climber as they continue to kill every chance a team has at winning until they hit B5 from S3. the more you see low elo the more you know that people aren't ready for it. even riot knows there is 2soon between hitting 30 and ranked.

Well, the site I use, MobaFIRE, has some excellent guides. They often go over all the viable items for a specific champion and when and in which situations to buy them. They'll go over optimal rune setups and mastery trees, with some variance according to role and matchup. I'll be copy pasting these builds into my item sets and rune pages, but just because I'm copy pasting them doesn't mean I don't know how to adapt. The best of these guides literally teach you how to adapt. There are some crappy MobaFIRE guides, but they're easy to spot, and most champions have at least one current high quality guide.

Tbh I'd rather have someone follow a guide than their own "self-made" build. Especially in low elos.

I like to lookup recomended items and strats. I dont have them memorized per say.

Also I like to go the champcounter website and lookup my lane matchups. Look at tips weaknesses vs specific champs, or other matchup advice.

I think this makes me better at ranked, especially learning about my opponent (sun tzu)

TyrekGoldenspear1 votes

I follow build guides but adjust them on the fly depending on the game, is this okay?

PS: I like your username. Sounds like a skin Riot should make.

Castman1 votes

This is esp true for those ADCs who blindly follow a "build" pros do. They stick to it without consideration for who they are facing and what their team needs.

Enemy team has Sona XinZhao Vladimir DrMundo Swain Me: hey can you build item 3123? ADC: that's not part of the build

Unstoppable Monk1 votes

If you think that you should pick good and that makes you good, Don't ranked.

I can't over emphasize people losing games because their champion has no value other than playing call of duty.

Veigar Thresh Azir Graves Heimerdinger Jinx Jax Lux Leona Nautilus Quinn Sona TwistedFate

In low elo picking these without understanding other parts of the game and the champion is going to result in a loss.

Veigar, Lux, Leo, Thresh, Sona, Naut support are bad in the hands of someone that isn't good/clutch enough. Especially Leo / Thresh. Lux isn't support. We've all seen those fotm Sonas miss their ults 90% in a game.

Azir and Veigar are burdens on map control from mid at early game so if your team keeps picking extremely laners into a team with a gank jungler its kind of bad.

Graves jungle honestly shouldn't be done in bronze unless there's 0 marksman in the lanes. Jax will usually be about losing lane and whine to the jungler for ganks etc. Shouldn't be played top in low elo.

Quinn really, really, really, really, really, really shouldn't be played on a whim as their vault sets them up to eat shit aka every skillshot in the game and requires a burden of knowledge beyond bronzescrub.

Twisted Fate requires positional finesse that bronzies do -not- have and idiots like to pick him with a Pantheon, which isn't a real combo. (Two ultimates that usually don't do that much damage vs. ones that do. Just run teleport instead.)

Jinx is just bad unless the enemy team is full of throwing feeders that can't kill a Jinx. And if they can't kill a Jinx they can't kill an ADC anyway so yeah.

ntbcool1 votes

tbh in your last game you probably would have been better just doing a googled build.... Edit: The yasuo game

ntbcool1 votes

Also i quickly looked and found the game you were talking about (you were Nami) and I looked illaoi(his top laner) was against an AD teemo(item 3022 item 3153 item 3036 item 3046 item 3085) who was feed. NOT saying his build was good, but it's pretty reasonable for someone in Silver to not know that teemo would be doing half and half damage. I just want to point this out cause it's not as simple as OP makes it out to be. AGAIN the build is bad, but it's not useless and is still putting in work. I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't even use a guide cause anyone could make a mistake like this even if they pick items themselves for the situation

Unstoppable Monk1 votes

okay gj downvote me with your fortune cookie wisdom and bronzisms

still won't change that ranked has been bad for anyone skillwise in the middle of ladder and everyone is forced to have their skills degrade if they're stuck grinding when down. false equivalency is false. season 6 is the year of the players boosting and bad premades throwing game. rank in this season is a worthless assessment of skill.

NotCounter1 votes

A good example of how much people do this is to play ARAM and see a Mundo rushing Sunfire vs a full AP team, or seeing mages still building Athenes.
