Rise of the Cleric Supports

So, with Soraka getting so much attention lately. I thought it'd be a good reason to discuss the subclass of supports here.

Observe the history of supports. Most of the time, supports that have lots of CC/Burst/Peel have been the ones picked, because they offer the best kill potential in lane. Champs like Leona, Thresh, Braum, and a few others have been the top tier supports since season 4. Janna being an exception to the tanky support champs because of her insane ability to peel for her team.

With the Pre-season changes, we have seen the Cleric supports, (Supports with Heals/shields) become top tier supports pretty much overnight.

I want to talk about WHY they've become the top tier supports.

There are 2 crucial changes. Grievous wounds overhaul, and the Windspeaker's Blessing Keystone.

First up, GW overhaul. The changes to this were designed to make GW a total counter to self-sustain. RIght now it's a tad weak, and most Cleric supports were balanced around GW affecting their healing. now that it doesn't. Most of their heals are outright bonkers. However, that's not really a big problem. For once, they have a reason to actually be picked over the Peeling and tanky supports like Thresh and Braum. Clerics like Nami/Sona also got buffed with the changes to the Spell-thief's line. Their large mana costs on their healing is not as severe as it used to be. Overall, This change alone would have made Clerics more viable.

Next up, the linchpin for why Clerics are so strong right now. Windspeakers blessing: This alone makes Clerics incredibly strong. Most of the other keystone masteries just aren't that good for supports. Deathfire touch would be alright for more mage/poke supports like Vel'Koz, Brand, Annie, Karma, Moorgana, But the only really good mastery, is the Windspeaker's blessing. It synergizes incredibly well with tanks, because of their tendancy to build massive amounts of resistances, and even helps squishies by giving them a boost to their smaller resistances. The 10% increase to healing is what's really putting some Cleric's on top.

If Riot feels that Clerics are NOT being kept in check by the counters of assassins/all-in supports/carries. Then The best way to nerf Clerics, would be to hit the bonus Resistances that WSB(Windspeaker's Blessing) grants. If it were to be nerfed, It should go from 15% to 7.5% or even 5%. The bonus to healing shouldn't be hit, as that's what Cleric's are supposed to do is HEAL. By hitting their identity, then you risk causing the Cleric support class to vanish once again from the League of Legends Scene.

As you all scream for nerfs to Soraka, please remember that Soraka's entire identity revolves around being the best damn healer in the game. if anything, nerf how tanky she can make her targets during skirmishes by hitting that part of WSB keytstone mastery.

I, for one, welcome the changes to the support meta. Support has felt as forced as Jungle in the competitive meta for two whole seasons, and now there are reasons to pick healing or buffing supports over pick supports for the first time since I began playing LoL almost three years ago.

I'm not sure we are playing the same game. Yes, Soraka has become top tier. But her peers have not. Nami, Taric, and Sona are performing pretty average. 10% on top of their heals is pretty non-existent. Of the shielding supports, only Janna really stands out and she has since last season. Lulu, Karma, and Lux (included for good measure) are all pretty average in the support role if not still a little weak.

The problem is Soraka. She was strong last season and all the mastery changes really did was make that more visible. The impact GW had over the last season and before are way over eggagerated (not singling this thread out but in general). GW have been stripped off most champion's abilities. Executioners Calling was never bought and didn't even exist last season. It was basically just Morellonomicon which was usually built on up to 1 champion per game and only applied at <40% health. And Ignite is usually only taken on 1-2 champions per team. So the GW changes are way overblown for a mechanic that pretty much didn't exist in the last several years.

The big reason Soraka is overbearing right now is that her healing is meant to overshadow all other cleric's. The biggest reason for this is twofold. her heals are more potent at earlier levels, while costing less and having a shorter cooldown. Combine this Windspeaker's blessing granting massive resistances and increasing her already potent healing means that while the other clerics are better off with the changes overall, because they're designed to fall short in the healing department compared to soraka, means that Soraka overshadows them in terms of pure healing. However Soraka's utility is much lower compared to other "Clerics".

Let's look at Nami's utility. An AoE Stun, a potential Double heal, an auto modifier that enables chasing, and an engage/counter engage ult. Taric: Double Heal, Armor Aura (Which is really good right now) a point and click stun, and an AoE Buff Aura ultimate. Sona: Team wide shields/heals, hastes, a really good AoE stun, and decent poke in lane. Janna: A teamwide heal that constantly refreshes the Windspeaker's blessing bonuses while allies are inside, A shield that is hyper powerful in terms of it's amount that it shields, and the best damn peeler in the game. The "Off" Clerics: Alistar: AoE stun/knockup, knockback, and a teamwide spammy heal that is really powerful with the WSB (though, 0/12/18 is probably prefered/better on him than 0/18/12) Karma: Decent Poke, decent lockdown in a skirmish, and a teamwide haste/shield on a shorter cooldown than Talisman of Ascension. The teamwide haste/shield is boosted by WSB

Overall, many of the champions synergize well with the WSB's massive boosts to heals and shields. Soraka by her nature and design turns all this up to 12 because she was already healing turned up to 11.

As I also pointed out, Grievous wounds was also one of the things that kept Soraka not that usable. Because of the GW overhaul, SOraka became a really good top tier support, but With the WSB and GW overhaul combined, Soraka became absolutely bonkers.

Overall, the Clerics are still very powerful supports. I've done very well with Nami since Soraka has been getting banned more and more often. The 150% mana regen on Eye of the Watchers and Frost Queen's Claim both are HUGE for Nami's Usage of her W in lane. In fact, there have been times where I've been able to max it 2nd because WSB boosted it's heal and the CDR and Mana regen meant I could spam it without worrying too much about going oom and not being able to have mana for my Q.

Clerics are on the rise.

For those of you that don't think ALl the clerics are really strong at the moment:

There is only one "Cleric" in the game; Taric.

No other character is even remotely close to the "Cleric" archetype.... keep in mind, "Healing" is not the only defining feature of a Cleric. A Cleric is tanky, usually wields a mace(Cleric wields a Maul), usually uses a shield, is almost never ranged (Aside from the occasional Slingshot action). The only thing Soraka does that is even remotely Cleric-y is Heal. She does not do anything else remotely close to being Cleric-y.

(Also Clerics are traditionally male... female 'Cleric' types tend to be druids or shamans ... Soraka is far closer to a Druid)

Most people just call the healing/shielding supports Clerics due to the fact that "Healer" is fairly specific, and not every WSB support is a healer, and many are shielders.

Technically, any "Healer" can be a Tank if you have the right build. You can go 3000+ HP with Soraka (note she's at 1855 HP (naturally, by herself) at Level 18, so you only need 1145 Health more for item 3083 to work—300 Health not given by the item, which is best given by item 3800). Build defensive items like item 3157 and item 3026 and you're set to take some damage. But yeah, I know what you're meaning. His abilities and nature best suit him as a healing Tank in comparison to the other Champs, and that (like you said) is the definition of a Cleric.

Terrible argument. Taric would be far tankier with exactly the same build.

The only way your garbage argument applies is if we give Soraka more tank items than Taric which is nonsense.

"Technically" and "can" generally tend to assume that you're able to build it a certain way, not that it's completely a viable strategy. Not sure where this toxicity came from, though....
