My idea for Taric's kit and gameplay as a paladin.

Here is my vision of Taric Taric, the gem knight paladin.

I think we can all agree that Taric is THE paladin of the game. A paladin fights besides you and offers you the supporting you need without hesitating to be in the middle of the fight. However, a paladin is also heavily armored and does not have the ability to enter it easily or move quickly around the battlefield. There is another point I'd like to make: Currently, Taric is the "armor" support, able to reach 300 armor in 10 minutes. The problem I have with that is that he becomes a very niche champion that feels useless once he faces magical damage dealer champions. What I tried to reach is a Taric that can protect you against magical and physical damage, but not simultaneously. Choosing what stance to use while you're Taric in team fight and choosing what to pick against Taric to maximize the problem of the choice could become very interesting. I've been partly inspired by another kit idea that I invite you to read.

My kit is a hybrid of supporting/buffs and CC/tankiness, since a paladin is supposed to be a versatile fighter. I however decided to let a lack of big initiation power although he has great capacities once he's in the fight. He also doesn't have a good mobility.

In my kit, I give numbers for cooldown and range, but I avoid precise numbers for damage and buffs because I don't think I could balance them correctly.

#Passive: Gemcraft The new passive forces Taric to act before he's able to land his sole hard-CC. For the versatility purpose, I allow him to heal an ally and himself by forgoing the CC.

Taric gains a gem shard every time he casts a spell, stacking up to three times. Once Taric has three shards, his next basic attack will deal bonus magic damage and stun his target. Taric can instead target an allied champion in a range of 350 to heal him and the target. Either of these actions consumes the shards.

#Q: Sapphire shield The new Q is a reactive/anticipative defense/offense ability. The shield is extremely effective against basic-attack-centered ADC.

CD: 11/10/9/8/7s Range: 500 Active: Taric shields himself or an allied champion for 1 second. The shield reflects basic attacks to its sender to deal 50% of the intended damage.

#W: Gem shroud There is the old armor buff transformed into a versatile magical/physical defense ability. The defense buff takes time to reach his maximum bonus, making it "risky" to switch mid-fight.

CD: 20s Range: 450 Passive: Gem protection cooldown is decreased by 1 second every time he or a nearby allied champion takes damage. Toggle: Armor Stance: Taric gains bonus armor and gains an aura that increases nearby allied champions' armor. The self-buff and aura buff double over 2 seconds. Magic Resistance Stance: Taric gains bonus magic resistance and gains an aura that increases nearby allied champions' magic resistance over 2 seconds. The self-buff and aura buff double over 2 seconds.

#E: Embedding earth An AoE soft CC with small initiation power, some damage and survivability. The leap is not big but can help in some situation where an enemy tries to escape. The shield offers some tankiness. The ability does many things, but nothing big.

CD: 14/13/12/11/10s Range: 350 Active: Taric leaps forward and smash the ground with his hammer. Units in a 250 range area are dealt damage and are rooted for 1s. Taric then gains a shield for 2 seconds that blocks some damage.

#R: Diamond storm Taric keeps his big-buff-aura ultimate, but it transforms from offensive buff to defensive buff. The aura deals damage and charges Taric's passive to compensate.

CD: 150/130/110s Active: After a 0.5s cast time, Taric unleashes a gem storm for 3 seconds. The storm is a 450 range aura that deals damage to enemy champions each second and grants the two stances of Gem shroud to Taric and his allies. Taric also gains a gem shard each second if at least one ally or one enemy is in the aura.

How would you activate the heal from his passive? would it just be right clicking on an ally while it is up, if so that could get clunky. I think treating almost like rengars empowered abilities might work. ie. once full stacks are reached all abilities have an empowered option, q also heals w instantly switchs to its most effective state e becomes a knock back/ knock up. for something like this it would require more stacks than just 3 through.

I thought about something like this, but as you said, Rengar already uses it. About the clunkiness of his passive, I think this shouldn't be more of a problem than Azir's passive.

I guess if all allies in a given range had a glow effect or some sort of indicator that they could be healed.

I'm not sure to understand what you mean.

Im not sure what part of your rework was inspired by mine but i really like what i see here :D.

Lets start with his passive: I think that good decision making is always good. Its heal can by made by trying auto-attack his allies (its imposible so its not colliding with anything)

His Q looks interesting but i dont know if this nullify enemy dmg or only send back 50%. I supose it nullify the dmg but 1s is quite short and requires form Taric player some asian level of skill xD. Maybe something like this will do: Q: Sapphire shield CD: 30/27/24/21/18s Range: 500 Active: Taric attaches sapphire gem to himself or allied champ. Gem lasts for 60s. When gemmed (:D) champ is auto-attacked it activates Sapphire Shield that reflects basic attacks to attacker to deal 50% of the intended damage for 1s. After this sapphire gem is consumed. Taric can attach up to 2 sapphire gems to single target, after first gem is consumed the 2nd have 3s cd before activation. Max number of sapphire gems: 2/2/3/3/4

in theory it look fun as hell and quite op too, well thats only sugestion :D

I really like an idea of stance dance for his W.

There is little to say about his E, all in all solid and useful ability.

Your ult idea also looks very solid and interesting but defensive power it gives combined with gem shards supply for passive heal can be too powerful. (without numbers i cant say really more)

Anyway Good Job :D

Mostly the passive, but it indirectly gave me inspiration for the whole kit. What you said about the armor made me think about a big problem I see with Taric.

It does nullify the damage. Your idea sounds interesting, but what I was trying to do with his Q is a low cooldown ability to ensure multiple passive procs in late game fights. And I think a reactive ability is more interesting gameplay-wise than a long-lasting deterring shield. Since Riot is is trying to create more active and reactive gameplay, your idea doesn't really fit what they're trying to accomplish. Your idea is good, but doesn't really fit in the whole kit.

Your ult idea also looks very solid and interesting but defensive power it gives combined with gem shards supply for passive heal can be too powerful. (without numbers i cant say really more)

As I said, my goal is to make his passive more spammable once we reach late game. The numbers are supposed to be adjusted to take account of the possibility to proc the passive multiple times in a short period of time. That's why I usually avoid giving numbers: Taric's current heal and Soraka's old heal are completely different and it's complicated to know what kind of numbers fits more in this passive idea. And the scaling is important too: AP, total/bonus health, level?

Anyway Good Job :D

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. :)

Main problems;

Q seems...extremely specialized. Like, almost worse than Fiora's W level of specialized. Yeah, Taric lanes with an ADC and supports them, but that's still a very short-duration, grant-any-ally-the-demonic-offspring-of-Counter-Strike-and-Thornmail. It's either going to be too short to be effective, or too long to be balanced.

Taric has lost all of his burst. All of it. His passive's Armor-Sheen and his Shatter damage are utterly gone, Dazzle's stun is there but it doesn't mention the damage, and it was all replaced by an AoE DPS spell and a jump-root that would probably have to be low-damage due to the fact that it is a ranged, AoE root with just a normal casting delay. So Taric's out of a lot of damage, in exchange for having his aura applicable to MR when he shifts.

The idea has potential, but I have my reservations about moving his heal spell AND stun to a passive that uses the same charge meter for both effects but only one can be used at a time, and about losing pretty much all of his damage output.

I understand your concern. My goal was to make a teamwork-focused champion that doesn't rely to his damage at all. I don't see Taric going anywhere other than bot with an ADC. Some people don't like the idea of an almost completely non-damaging champion. As a main support, it doesn't bother me at all, but I understand it does for many people. Maybe I could make his AA deal more damage when he has 1 and 2 shards and add damage when he changes his W-stance.

I'm not entirely sure you do get it.

Taric is the closest thing we have to a support bruiser. He's pretty much the only support who can duel with an enemy ADC and handle the fight well (if not win). Removing all of his damage to give him 1 more CC and an MR aura seems like a pretty unfair trade.

I have to disagree on this. I consider Leona way more bruisy than Taric. And I think a support that can 1v1 an ADC is a problem.
