Here's what Riot's said about the Resolve mastery tree.

The Resolve tree provides some solid options to make champions tankier, but ironically falls a bit flat in supporting the tank playstyle. We’re adding choices that reward tanks for actively doing their job rather than continuing to make them passively stronger.

So why exactly is it alright for damage classes to become passively stronger via masteries, but not tanks? Considering how poorly balanced tank vs ADC/APC is at the moment, you'd think tanks could use a little boost to their passive strength, as opposed to the extra damage you're giving to champions...yet again.

The more I see mastery info, the less I'm convinced that Rioters actually know what they're doing.

I think you misinterpreted their comments.

The Resolve tree provides some solid options to make champions tankier

Champions like Nidalee LeeSin were taking SOTA to get early tank stats to duel better, sustain better, and be tankier. Riot noticed this and realized it was an issue, they say this here

but ironically falls a bit flat in supporting the tank playstyle

they are openly admitting that tanks do not have masteries that support their playstyle.

We’re adding choices that reward tanks for actively doing their job rather than continuing to make them passively stronger.

they now say that they are adding masteries like courage of the colossus to actively reward tanks for doing their job in fights.

That's specifically SotA. I don't have a problem with SotA being removed.

I have a problem with the rest of the tree being absolute shit outside of Runic Armor and Insight. Insight is more support focused than defense, though.

The entire Resolve tree caters to supports, not solo lane/jungle tanks. SotA was the only reason most people went down Resolve after Grasp was heavily nerfed to be near-unviable on anyone. That should tell Riot that the entire tree needs fixing.

Courage of tht Colossus doesn't fix the issue. It just replaces SotA. The rest of the tree is still shit, and Courage of the Colossus will be the only reason most people are going down it.

It doesn't change anything, it just makes it so only champions with hard CC will go down Resolve now.
