Ghostcrawler is the prime example for "Don't hire another company's reject" (long 6 AM ramble)

SaltyToplaneGoat··46 votes·68,954 views

Because it is most likely that they got kicked out (or in fancier words "left on his own") for a reason and you don't want whatever mess he caused back at Blizzard to happen on your place.

There are people that are just incompetent on their job. Those are however easily indeintified: they make a massive mess, the lesson is learned, and the mistake will not happen again - and somewhere in between the dude is fired. Sadly, Ghostcrawler is none of those. The problem with him is that he has the completly wrong visions and goals about something that will inevitably BREAK by trying to force it to fill into those goals. It's like a political ideologist ignoring all reality for his grand project, no matter how many problems it causes. (add "communism" joke here)

The problem is that such a process is slow, so there's no "big bang" that will make the company just slam the breaks and correct the course. If anything, once enough energy and effort has been invested on such a "wrong route", they just keep going, because "well we already put so much into it!!!", which is the absolute opposite of it being helpful.

Now what am I talking about in specific? Not really the runes, or the preseason, it's about the general underlying philosophy. Now I remember him saying things like making this game a thing for generations, something extremly big and whatever - and already here I'd say "No. Stop. This is not how any of this works at all". While it is true that LoL is a massive part of gaming history already and surely a landmark of geek culture, that is not a basis to develop a game on - mostly because even of the best medial product people will grow tired off. Starcraft 2 is a massive part of gaming culture as well, and it was a big deal while it lasted, and now it's coming out as F2P and none cares anymore. That's just how things are - and Blizzard did the right thing that any gaming company would do: bring things to an end and do what is your job as a game dev, which is MAKING A NEW GAME, which they did with Overwatch.

But how does this affect LoL? Well, Riot as a studio is completly fixated on this ONE GAME THAT TOTALLY IS THEIR LEGACY TO THE GAMING WORLD or whatever according to Ghostcrawler. Since it is their only product aside from some random merch, they have to profit from it because a game company doesn't run of air and water. Now, that inevitably sends the focus towards the ECONOMICALLY MOST PROFITABLE PLAYER GROUPS.

And those are: Esports and New Players.

Esports is where the game celebrates itself, and where the most high sums of money flow - simply the money you could charge for ADs from sponsors must be enormous. Or the sponsors of esports teams - in South Korea there's a whole industry around it. At the same time you have a certain star-dom for your playerbase, which is also nice to have. Not much needs to be said here.

New Players lack most of the content, so they are most likely to spend the most money. Also they are not invested enough in the game to actually see any of its flaws properly yet, making them the perfect cashcow to milk.

Note that both groups are ABSOLUTE MINORITIES WHEN COMPARED TO THE NORMAL PLAYERBASE. Yet, all design goes towards those two groups, and it all boils together when suddenly the game gets designed around the idea, how fun it is to WATCH ESPORTS FROM A NEWBIE PERSPECTIVE.

The thing is tho: a video game is something you PLAY, not something you primarely WATCH. So gearing a game towards watchability is obviously pressing against the core principles that made it a good game to begin with. Faster matches, more damage, RANDOM THINGS FLYING AROUND AND GO BOOM!! Who gives a shit about immobile champs? No one, they are not funny to watch or make big plays. Even trades? No, we want people to go for the 1vs5 sole-hero narrative and GET AWAY WITH IT, because that is more "exciting".

No one at Riot cares about the millions and millions of people who a) don't watch esports and b) aren't easily fascinated newbies who are potential whales ("big spenders"). They don't even give a shit about the "old whales" either - those have no more money to spend after all, and if then only for the occasional new skin. Not comparable to the amount of money a new one could spend.

And in the position Riot is in now, they are forced to keep on that because they are economically dependant on their one single game they have.

You know what they SHOULD have done? Used the fact that they have build a recognicable brand and popular characters to expand with new titles. Used the lore as a springboard for new games and then distributed then over their already existing audience for cheap. Like, imagine they made something like a nice and neat metroidvania platformer about Ezreal exploring the world or some other nonsense, and then sold it for RP over the client, maybe for 10 or 15 bucks. Given the million-strong audience combined with a relatively low development cost, they would have raked in MILLIONS in profit, while at the same time they would have expanded on the story, which in turn would have opened up more options. Not to mention the whole universe they'd could have established in modern geek culture...

But in this case they wouldn't be dependant on SPECIFIC MINORITY GROUPS to keep their actual big title going.

That's what a smart game studio does: producing games. And since Riot has not produced a single thing in the last years aside from a number of extra characters and a whole flood of irrelevant cosmetics, I think it is safe to say that as a gaming company right now they are an utter failure. They tied themselves to their game, sink or swim, with Ghostcrawler being the figurehead of it all.

But it will sink. That's not pessimissm or me wanting the game to die, it just a FACT. In five to ten years LoL will be "history" and new games will take the stage, as it has always been. The mere idea that you can keep a game running forever is already nonsense, the attempt to design around such a concept is already taking the first steps to making sure it dies even faster.

It's kinda fascinating how the pattern repeats: back then WoW was THE thing. It was the thing that would stick around forever and ever, then A CERTAIN SOMEONE build on that vision despite it going against the fundamental principles of the medium itself, and then that fucked over a lot of things did a lot of damage.

Now we have a game that is seemingly THE BIG THING THAT'S GOING TO BE AROUND FORVER, and yet again there is a certain someone, WHO'S ACTUALLY THE VERY SAME PERSON, who does the exactly same thing which again fucks over a lot of things because of the very same reasons he fucked up things before.

Games are not meant to last forever. No form of media does. Sure, some become classics, but even those are barely watched. It's something people as a mass maybe have seen once, or something academics talk about at times, but nothing they binge on regulary. So the very notion of pushing a design on that way is going against all reason, and can only end in disaster.

Ya should have focussed on lore, because stories and their protagonists go on over generations. But game design? Not so much. So maybe give Ghostcrawler a slap and teach him his place, before he does not only bring the game down, but also the wonderful potential all the lore around it has.

Hey there.

I don't really want to use this as an opportunity to defend my record. (Spoiler: I think it's fine).

However, I'd love a chance to talk about how we view League's long-term strategy, which may be a topic that not every player often thinks about.

The traditional way to make a game was to package it in a box for 60 USD or whatever and put it on the shelf in a Gamestop, or going way back, an EB or something. You wanted players to love your game, but you also wanted them to finish your game, because you only made money on the box, and you needed them to not only value that box, but to want the next box, and the one after that. We sometimes talk about this consumer product strategy as "planned obsolescence."

The first game I worked on that didn't follow that strategy was an MMO, where much of the revenue came from a subscription. The strategy was to keep players so engaged that they never got bored and risked unsubscribing. Turns out this is pretty hard to do. Players do eventually move on to other games, so to keep your revenue constant, you need to keep bringing in new players.

This model tends to be even more extreme in microtransaction games, especially mobile ones (and especially low quality mobile ones) where players may quickly get tired of your nonsense and paywalls and running out of resources. The business model here is to constantly get new players (or rope current players into bringing in their friends) because if you ever run out of new players, you quickly run out of money.

The reason we think League can be evergreen and last for many years is that it works really differently. The game is free to play and there is no subscription. Much of League's revenue comes from optional cosmetic content. This creates a situation where players don't often feel the need to formally quit - there is no unsub moment or anything. The icon is still sitting there on your computer when you want to go back to it. So compared to many games, our churn rate is really low. Players may take breaks, but many come back. This also means we are less dependent on new players. Our strategy is to keep current players engaged and happy. Historically we've made very little effort to attract new players.

In terms of evergreen games, I often use examples like Magic, D&D or possibly Pokemon. Those are games that you can drift in and out of for years. They evolve. They release new products. But they are still recognizable over time and have been around for decades. Will they last forever? I don't know. But they last a lot longer than most games. That's what we aspire to do with League (and no, we're not there yet).

Riot as a company invests heavily in esports, but on the League team it is not always forefront in our minds. Our balance philosophy for example focuses on players in the high Plat / low Diamond skill level. Balancing only for esports is a little short-sighted because you are tuning the game literally for a few dozen people, while probably making the game worse for tens of millions. When we do make changes specifically for esports, it tends to be right around Worlds and is also focused more on esports viewers than pro players. In other words, we don't make a ton of changes just for esports, and those we do make are often targeted on making a game that is fun to watch. The vast majority of our features (things like missions, champion mastery, matchmaking, Star Guardian Invasion) have almost no impact on esports at all. They are for the rest of us.

As a company, esports does have benefits and that's why it's an important part of our company strategy. We don't spend much on traditional marketing, and in a way esports is part of our marketing. Pro games also provide a way for players to stay connected to League if they're taking a break from the game as I mentioned above. Esports can also be aspirational because it's inspiring to see players playing the exact same game as you but doing things you didn't know were possible. It's an opportunity for the community to come together. It's a celebration of League.

Does Riot want additional games? Absolutely. We want to be a game company that stands the test of time, and we know we need a whole library of games to do that. But we aren't willing to shift so many resources away from League and towards new games that we hurt the one successful game that we do have. Remember, we don't need that planned obsolescence model that I mentioned above. More games will come in time, and we have time.

I know that was long, but I hope it helps provide a little more perspective about how we think about product strategy.

You have millions that are UNHAPPY with this current crappy preseason patch. Why don't you fix it or better yet, revert it? That would make your current players "engaged and happy."

Edit: Stop downvoting me. That's rude as hell.

Back up your "millions" person other than reddit/this board. Because I see a lot of players liking the new season. Yes it is busted, they say it, it is obvious but there is some very cool things in it and it is more about adjustement than being inherently bad.

Following up balance will come as time pass. Only here does guys think balance should be made after two day testing, I come from the FGC community while being a lol player since years, it take time to get it 'right' on a better direction.

I think the blue essence low income is a bigger problem to resolve and a bigger offense than people QQing on a new season being broken.

We had Black Cleaver meta, it is just a reminder of the glory day when you wished pantheon could be not viable again.

MysticDreams124 votes

Reddit, this board, Facebook, etc. Tons of people.

Sure some might like it, but the majority right now don't. There are way too many problems with it. I don't see how Riot could've let this go live besides 1) they are completely stupid, 2) they are lazy and greedy bumbos, 3) just don't know how to balance for shit.

IMO, they are all three combined.

Even with all the broken shit in this preseason, this is the healthiest the game has been since it's release, that's a FACT. Relying on the old runes was a mix between invisible stats and slight Pay-To-Win, removing those for runes that are strong and change playstyles was the biggest change to League's gameplay in years. This is also JUST the preseason, imagine a balanced rune system that lets players play fast and makes games more interesting and exciting.

That's something the old Runes could never support.

MysticDreams124 votes

Wow, that's fucking rude. People have good opinions, regardless of their rank. Don't be a jerk.

The healthiest? Are you smoking crack? No, it's not!

These runes aren't that strong, they are more like masteries without runes, and we lost a lot of them. We lost a lost of customization too!

I can't imagine this ever being healthy enough that would make people happy come back. This has made it way TOO fast, and just a clusterfuck of snowballing. That's not fun.

Besides, preseasons never initially brought balance, but new big features. You should give them time to balance things out during preseason.

That's even more rude. You called out my rank, saying my opinion is worthless.

My comments you just pulled where talking about Riot's balance, there's a difference between the two. And I bet a lot agree with me.

I believe the point of their statement was that they saw irony in how you were being rude and a jerk about Riot employees, yet you are upset that someone was rude to you in the same way.

Perhaps you should consider that for a minute. And be kinder to people.

To be completely fair, what on this patch makes you unhappy? I personally have fun on this patch, exploring new ways with runes, and only thing that is a little stingy for me is BE. By reverting the game to the previous state, you would literally revert the biggest good change that has happened to masteries and runes since the beginning of league. Masteries were impacting your game, but not to the point they should as pre-game modifier. New runes might not give you the expected level of engagement as for some champions one keystone is literally go-to but you can take 3 other runes and secondary path out of 4. Also, previous runes were just a base stat amplifiers and didn't influence your playstyle other than "I'm against Zed so I'll take armor yellows" or "I to push on Ahri and roam so I'll take mana regen and play safer".

MysticDreams122 votes
  1. Basically shoeing us into a small build path for champions, and not letting us customize as much as we want too.

  2. Completely taking runes out together, and giving us a small crappy patch of masteries as compensation.

  3. Completely shafting AP again, like they always do. AD gets all the nice runes, AP doesn't.

  4. Taking out currency after matches, and making it a hard climb to try to level, so we are pushed to try to buy RP, which shows how they are all about the $$$ instead of making quality stuff people are happy about.

  5. Making the game a faster, even more snowbally shit show than it already was, which we don't need at all.

Just this overall preaseason. I hate it all.

the downvotes are there obviusly from people disagreeing with you. jsut cuase some people at reddit adn on the boards don't like the preseason or quit doesn't mean the majority is unhappy. Hell even a big bunch of old players come back cause league is fun again, the meta got shaken up. You clearly have no data to value your argument that themost current players are unhapyp with things like runes. Sure, be is kinda controversial right now but riot is already on the move to addreess that a bit and than it will be just a habituation thing. After all some people are just at every patch unhappy, if their loveable championg gets nerfed or reworked, their hate champion gets buffed or somethign changes. Herald, plants, dragons, the graphic update: all of them had their haters and after a few days, weeks or months the haters there gone or shut down or they had something new to hate. But league still grew and will still grow cause guess that: riot is not as dumb as some people think and do things to increase leagues popularity by increasing the joy peple can have by playing or watching that game.

MysticDreams121 votes

The boards. Reddit. Facebook. I have seen many people unhappy with this stupid ass preseason.

I don't see the hate coming down anytime soon or in the near future unless this system gets reverted.

And no. Riot only does things to further their greedy pockets. They don't do it to make people have more "joy" playing or watching it.

Häxel1 votes

well i don't use reddit and see on twitter and asking a bunch of people (like 100, 200 guys on my campus) and they are mostly happy. People tend to flame the plants and their rng and now no one gives a sh* anymore. Also Riot cares the joy cause they are not ea who make dozens of games you have to pay much. Youg et league for free and only skins cost money. If they would not try to make league more joy people would more likly to quit. You can't be serious they thought about Runes andBe like "how toremove a loooot of joy from the game". Go on, bookark this thread and coment it in 1 month, 2 months, half a year or a year. Than we can look again at reddit and if league already died, playernumbers fallen or risen. I say with holding on this system adn not reverting it the playernumber will still rise. Not one pro quits, not one pro feels sad of the remove of old garbo system (many wished it would have come sooner) and evens ome old pros come back. leauges system with the odl runes and levelcap 30 was outdated long ago. In nearly every game you have unlimited levelign adn in most of them youg et your rewards by leveling up, ot just by playing. And greedy, greedy riot even increased the levelign up rewards, dropboxrates and did things liek the lotosystem. Oh no, they give free content... Sure, there is ofc a buisnessplan for that: More free content, more players. More palyers, more people who beside free content buy also pay content, ingame either or support esports. Still you are not forced to buy or play by anything. Casual players have even yb far the greates increase in what they get in comparison to hardcore/progamer.

MysticDreams121 votes

I'm sorry, I would reply to you but I can't really understand what you are saying. Your language is a bit grammatically incorrect, per se.

HalcyonDweller3 votes

Wow way to lord your language skills over someone and treat them like they are inferior simply for not having English as a first language. They are from EUW, probably did their best to communicate their ideas, and you chose to treat them like garbage because they disagreed with you.

Here I will translate for your superior ass:

{quoted}

well i don't use reddit but looking at twitter and asking a bunch of people (like 100, 200 guys on my campus) it seems like people are mostly happy. People used to rage about the plants and now nobody cares about that anymore. <They are saying that people had a similar reaction to plants and now plants are fine. They suggest that the same thing will happen with runes reforged.>

Also Riot cares about the joy of the players. Unlike EA they focus on one game and they still make the playable content free. The only things that cost money are skins. If Riot did not work this hard to make league enjoyable, it would show and players would quit... but players aren't quitting like they would if Riot actually did this.

You can't be serious saying they thought about Runes and said, "how can we make the game the least fun possible?" Go on, bookmark this thread and comment it in 1 month, 2 months, half a year or a year. Then we can look again at reddit and see if league died, or if player numbers have fallen or risen. I think Riot keeping this system and not reverting it the player number will still rise. Not one pro quits, not one pro feels sad of the remove of old garbo system (many wished it would have come sooner) and even some old pros come back.

league's system with the old runes and level 30 cap was outdated long ago. In nearly every game you have unlimited leveling and in most of them you get your rewards by leveling up, not just by playing. And 'greedy, greedy riot' even increased the leveling up rewards, dropboxrates and did things like the lootsystem. <I assume they are referring to capsules and key fragments for sportsmanlike play> Oh no, they give free content... Sure, there is ofc a business plan for that: More free content, more players. More players, more people who beside free content also buy paid content in game or even support esports events. Still you are not forced to buy or play by anything. Casual players have even gotten an increase in how much rewards they get in comparison to hardcore or pro players. <Probably referring to how players get more benefit from shorter play time now (First win of the day XP bonus) than players who play for 8 hours a day.>

Honestly though, I really haven't seen any effort by Riot to keep older players. None whatsoever. Do you really think reselling limited and legacy skins makes people loyal? Do you really think reneging on tens of promises such as "no 1350 rp pricepoint" and "not all new champions will be priced 6300" makes you feel friendly to those loyal to you? Even now when there was a rune refund we were insulted with a tiny amount of BE for all the time we spent on the game and the runes that you made. But the refunds were larger the sooner they were purchased. That's definitely advamtageous to the players who have been around since 2009.

So what has Riot actually done for the loyal long term players?

P.s. As for not balancing around eSports, I'm sure your entire playerbase trusts you on that. Sure you do balance around the rest of the players, but please don't try to tell us that you're not spending at least over 50% of the balancing on eSports.

Wild Herbivore1 votes

"I don't really want to use this as an opportunity to defend my record. (Spoiler: I think it's fine)."

It's really not.

As for LoL, there is no excuse towards the state of the game as it currently stands. Right now the game is dying and haemorrhaging decent players who have quite frankly given up entirely. But yano, you will probably still have millions of 12 year olds that will buy skins with their mothers debit cards regardless of the state of the game.

I criticise because it seems you are incapable of implementing simple things like:

  • Aram being ALL RANDOM instead of being dominated by Aram specific accounts so you have a better chance of getting Ziggs, Lux, Xerath, ezreal, etc etc. While i'm on the subject of Aram, what about the bilgewater map? what an utter waste of assets that is!!! There is nothing stopping you creating more Aram maps and having the theme randomised.

  • Afk's, How are we in 2018 and there is STILL no safety net for the rest of the team. I hear the excuse of "It would be abused by premades" I'm sure your system knows who is premade and make the premades take the same damn penalty while the innocent players are not severely punished for something out of your own control. There is just no excuse! none what so ever. this is season 8 now.

  • Trolls/afk's/Int feeders, DO I HAVE TO ENDURE THESE TYPES OF PLAYERS NEARLY EVERY SINGLE FUCKING GAME?

  • the 1-shot, hyper-mobile, mega-damage state of the game is disgusting. How the fuck is J4 with Duskblade allowed to even happen and nothing is being done about it. Duskblade too, Duskblade can go fuck itself! The damage is absurd and the ward clearing passive..............really? did you have to add that? not only can you 1 shot people but you have the advantage to know if you have been seen or not. And ZOE, I swear i remember someone from the riot team say once that "It's not fun to be one shot with no counterplay" yet you design a champion to explicitly do JUST THAT. ARE YOU ON FUCKING CRACK?

  • Your punishment system is pathetic, to the point where it's exploited relentlessly by players who just want to grief. They know they will hardly ever get banned. It's common knowledge for crying out loud! if you don't want to ban people from the game just ban people from ranked mode when it's clear they are nothing but a hinderance to everyone around them. c'mon. I know this is a hard issue BUT THERE IS NO SAFETY NET WHAT SO EVER FOR ANYONE WHO IS TRYING TO ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME.

  • Top lane is an absolute joke right now and Botlane snowballs so damn hard... Each game turned into a coinflip on who gets the autofilled botlane.

  • How the absolute fuck is there no soloqueue? do you think it's fair that a player going in solo should be queued up against people with a clear advantage over them literally down to better communication. This aint rocket science! have the same queues as we already have just add solo queue... jesus... it should not have to be said...

  • there is no way to escape a game when players want to hold you hostage on an obviously lost game.

  • brand new level 30 accounts get placed in silver........................... this one should be self explanatory, this creates what people call ELO hell.

  • I'm tired so I will make it the last one but all of the above and more does nothing but breed more toxicity into the game. This sense of unfairness and Bullshit will and has created more toxicity then you would like to admit. I mean, I'm even guilty of it. it's the only reason I ever rage and i'm a very calm person in real life but this game and the shit i have to endure every single fucking day rubs me the wrong way. And the thing is, it's completely justified. This game is more like an abusive relationship then a fun game.

So there are a few examples of stuff that if you focus on WILL improve the game dramatically. For me, I no longer care. This game has broken me physiologically and I probably will never return, I just want to tell you the fucking truth and hope my words will change things for others for the better. I used to love this game... I still do in a way... but I fucking hate the community, the development team and the sheer amount of bullshit people have to endure on a daily basis.

You probably wont read this, but it's here for when you give a fuck.

When people see the same 50-55 champions getting spammed, you think that they will perceive LoL as a balanced game even when there arent any similar problems in their games?

Totally agree that that is a problem. However, we'd rather have that problem than to see pros play 140 champs but when you go into the game yourself, get told that only 50-55 champs are viable for mere mortals and the rest of the champs were for pros. (And we even have that to some extent with pro-favorite champs like Elise.)

Ideally diversity would be high for pro and for normal, but since we want to use the same set of numbers for all players (versus say have Cho do more damage in pro games than Silver games), we make it hard on ourselves.

could be worse, you could be trying to balance pvp arenas and battlegrounds and raid damage/healing numbers with the same number sets :o

Since you are talking about balance here: Could u just stop shitting on bruisers and actually make them viable again? Not replace them with tanks? By giving tanks a tower burst rune so that there is absolutely no reason to pick a splitpusher anymore? By giving every fuckin tank % max health dmg and additionally forcing bruisers into high health low resistance builds so that tanks always win the 1v1 by sheer brute force? I have faith in that you don't think like back in s4 that melees take no skill and only adcs are skill champs and exciting to watch. Can't imagine people enjoy cho vs maokai every second game when we could have camille vs jayce/jax/fiora/riven/yasuo for example.

Last rant: nerf gnar, panth. Ty.

because jayce/fiora/riven/yasuo are cancer to play against.

You know, I don't understand all the hate GC gets from old WoW players (of which I'm a 10+ year vet, just so you know. My account was made the week Vanilla launched, and I played up until WoD launched, and went back for a few weeks in Legion). Thing is, Vanilla and BC (GC started in 2008) were clunky, archaic, and not really that fun. This classic server is goinna rip those rose-tinted goggles off a lot of peoples' faces, and I'm goinna laugh.

Now, when do most people say WoW was at its peak? Hmm... well that'd be Wrath. Guess who had a very large part in developing Wrath? Yeah, GC did. He worked on WoW until WoD came out, which is arguably the worst point WoW has been in -- funny coincidence, huh?

Under GC, the classes had fun kits, they weren't two buttons, and the game was overall just fun. I actually enjoyed myself in WoW from Wrath to MoP, and then WoD came along, they brought over the guy from the Diablo team, and we made every class as braindead as the Diablo classes -- and that only got worse in Legion. And now that WoW is bleeding subs so fast, that must be GC's fault too, right?

So, I don't know what all GC really does with League. I'm not goinna try and defend anything he does at Riot. But WoW was at its best under him, so I'm goinna say your hate is a bit misplaced. He can only do what he's allowed to do, after all, and Chinese companies want the game to be as basic and wide-appealing as possible, to make as much money as they can. So maybe you should ask Beck, Merril and Ma some questions.

This was not Ghostcrawlers fault. Jay Wilson, as I understand, was primarily responsible for changing the atmosphere and feel of those games.

Well what do you prefer, Ghostcrawler or Holinka? With Ghostcrawler we're gonna rework every champion to have 18 abilities. If they hired Holinka they'd rework every champion to have 2 abilities.

Jokes aside, there is a real point about catering to your esports viewership and not your massive majority. This game didn't become big by being a fast paced e-sports eye candy. It became the biggest game in the world while having those 50 minutes high stress games that were anxiety inducing to watch and play.

when do they ever cater heavily to esports tho
