Both are fine and viable at the competitive level.

Easiest to use a mix of the two;

You can click and hold on the minimap to see whats going on elsewhere while locked, and can bind the lock/unlock to space or mmb to do globals etc.

I've always used lock. In the chaos of a teamfight, I don't need my camera accidentally running off on me.

I use locked for actually doing things since I hate having to move my camera all the fucking time, but still jump around the map to see what's going on.

The idea behind not using locked is so that you don't tunnel vision as hard, and you look other places.

I played from 2014-2017 with locked camera. My friends roasted me hard lol. But what I did was play a sona for like 30 games on unlocked camera. Unlocked really helps because I’m able to more easily land skill shots, you can see what you’re about to run into better, and overall map awareness goes up. Try playing a bunch of games on a support that doesn’t have a ton of skill shots. Even try bots first so the pressure is less.

This did help me go from silver 4 to gold 3 if that helps any.

Same, always play locked. I've tried to switch over to unlocked but apparently my natural mouse movement is too chaotically uncontrolled and I lose track of myself constantly lol

I play MOSTLY locked, but will unlock if I need to. Idk, just the camera shifting at the slightest jerk in a direction is too much for me.

You can't play League with a locked camera. If you have your camera locked, you're simply playing a different game.

Unlocked, if you play alot of champions with high range skillshots, then you really appreciate being able to move the camera freely to aim.

Youre really restricting your potential with a locked camera. Locked camera is never a good idea. Get out of that habit, starting right now. Guarentee you within a week you will be a whole bracket higher in rank.

I wish locked was not an option and not the default. I played casually for 3 years and cant play unlocked.....

Too much muscle memory.

To be fair, Doublelift plays locked.. Or at least he admitted as much a few years ago.

I played unlocked but I use a gaming peripheral... So playing at my friend's house on his wife's pc just really stinks for me

I have it binded to my space bar, but I don't have to hold it. One click is enough.

I lock it in tfs so I can see where I am.

Unlocked in general, but I find myself holding the space bar during team fights.

In Dunkey's video, "Bad Graphics", he talks about how camera placement is important in platformers. Now, obviously, League of Legends isn't a platformer, but he mentions how in a certain Mario game the camera doesn't focus (or lock) on Mario, and it makes the experience for that section feel really odd and not as enjoyable. That's how it feels when you unlock the camera for a bit after always being on locked.

I always played with an unlocked camera because I started with Warcraft 2 and the like, and locked camera just isn't a thing in RTS aside League of Legends...

Actually, somebody told me since I was having trouble with posistioning in fights I should lock the camera for fights, but it just feels so icky I've attempted to just track my posisition better by all other means, such as hitting F1.
