Why the hell are you gutting Statikk Shiv?

item 3087 "Damage changed to 30-100 from 50-150. Now deals 75% bonus damage to minions up from 50%"

That's a 50% decrease in damage towards champions. Who is even going to build Shiv anymore if it does this little damage? Not even Yasuo is going to want this garbage item.

Because it's not really meant for damage to champions, its primary thing is wave clear

MohawkBird1 votes

I'd honestly beg to differ. It fills a niche on heavy burst AD carries, such as Graves. It's good for wave clear as well, but I get or more so if I want extra burst or just extra magic damage because we have a lot of physical damage on our team.

Zair Umbras3 votes

You can't beg to differ anything. It's MEANT for wave clear. You can't say 'Oh, it does well with this too'. That doesn't change what it's meant for. The intention is to help with waveclear, not for raw damage in a fight, which is why it's being changed to fit that description better.

MohawkBird1 votes

I can. Sure the item is great for waveclear, but it also provides mixed damage for armor stacking team and synergizes with heavy burst ADCs. The original person says it's not really meant to damage champions, but the amount of burst it gives says otherwise.

Same can be said about Luden's Echo. It's technically "meant" for waveclear, but you see a lot of poke mages getting it for the extra damage and mid game powerspike of it.

I think you interpreted my post wrong. I wasn't saying Shiv isn't a great waveclear item, because it is, but what I am saying is that it provides huge burst (especially with crit) and mixed damage to help ADCs get through armor stacking teams. I find myself getting this item on ADCs that already have great waveclear, and I am sure many others don't treat this item as purely a waveclear tool.

Pretty sure when Riot made the item they said wave clear, the fact it's good at something else obviously means it is a problem.

  1. It's a 33% decrease in damage, not a 50% decrease.
  2. Anyone that wants more waveclear on their team is going to get it.
JackMcSnipeyz3 votes

Maybe cause it's not a damage item? Besides - all attack speed items now have their own situational picks. PD is for dueling Fire cannon is for poke and harass Runna's hurricane is for teamfights And Statik Shiv is for wave clear and pushing - thats why the minion damage was buffed.

Realistically, only 2 of those items can be used by melee champions. Runaans obviously isn't usable and the Rapidfire cannon range increase on melees is so small as to be worthless. And please, Shiv may be good for waveclear but that's not why people finish it. No one goes "Need to hurry up and finish this Shiv so I have some waveclear!". They get it for the extra burst. The waveclear is just a bonus.

Well then people abused it until now in that case because riot clearly stated that SS is for wave clear and fast pushes. The small extra damage is still there but the main function of the item is for pushing. I assume you're a yasuo main, dont worry, yasuo will still be retardedly strong even with 33% less magic damage every 5 seconds

Slamurai Jack1 votes

Yasuo's that are thinking clearly won't be building it anymore. It gives such a pitiful powerspike on completion now that it isn't even worth building for him anymore. I'd rather have PD or Triforce if Shiv is gonna be this weak.

Good, if you prefer extra dueling ability get PD, if you want to farm and push lane hard get SS you have plenty of options

Slamurai Jack1 votes

I'm actually thinking Zeal->IE->Triforce and run 10% crit runes for the final 20% crit. Running crit runes is stronger than it was before thanks to Warlords Bloodlust and Tri is overall a much better item than Shiv or PD, both on completion and scaling as the games goes on. I would be amazed if anyone else goes that route but I think it has promise.

Zair Umbras1 votes

Yasuo has 110 base AD at level 18. Tri would give you 220 damage. Shiv at 18 would give you 225 with an IE. Shiv is also AoE. Trinity will always be subpar in comparison to Shiv and especially now since it'll give much, much less AS so you'll have to make up for that AS to keep your Q on as short of a CD as possible. Going Zeal->IE->Tri means you'll have the 100% crit if you run the 10% crit, but you're losing out on 20% AS, going to have a bad early game due to the lack of runes (which is why people originally grabbed Trinity last season so they wouldn't -have- to use 10% in runes), and you're already losing sustain in lane with Warlord's being nerfed to only affect champion hits like it should've been originally since every other offensive keystone was only usable on Champs.

Trinity is also a horrible item right now on everyone but Gangplank. Jax and Irelia aren't even picking up that useless thing until their 3rd or 4th item compared to 1st or 2nd.

MohawkBird1 votes

With the nerfs to Warlord's Bloodlust coming you'd have to be very aggressive to get the healing going in the early game, and even then the trade damage you take from it will outheal the mastery. Crit runes were great before bloodlust got nerfed, but not anymore because you won't be able to utilize the sustain.

Slamurai Jack1 votes

That's fine. I ran crit runes last season before Warlord's bloodlust was even a thing, and the mastery is only going to make that even better. I don't know where the idea that crit runes make your early game weaker came from, but it's a blatant lie. Your early game is stronger with crit runes, and significantly so. Going into lane with 20% crit is cheesy as hell and will constantly get you early first bloods. And now that Shiv gives a weaker powerspike than a Sheen, I see no reason to build it anymore. If that gives me an excuse to run crit runes again, then good for me.

When I play Shaco I go "I need to hurry up and get shiv for waveclear"...

Runaans is the only one that can not be used on Melee Champions... Have you ever used Rapid Firecannon on Garen? Shit is hilarious...

Ever seen RFC+SS on Hecarim? You start your jump earlier, but you still jump -as- far into your enemy, plus do a ton of huge burst.

And significantly less if you crit. They completely gutted the item, no way around it.

Stephenizgod3 votes

Omg! What will Yasuo do without the extra 20-50 magic damage?!?! HOW WILL HE STAY RELEVANT IN THIS ANTI-YASUO META!?!?! What other possible items can he buy now!??!

This item was not meant for damage to champions, its a wave-clear item so this is a huge buff to its actual function. Also your math is wrong that is not a 50% decrease... Also even if they didn't buff the Minion damage it still would not have been gutted, so you are pretty over-dramatic.

Slamurai Jack1 votes

That's exactly what the item has been for the last several seasons until Riot decided they wanted to change it into a waveclear item this patch without providing a real alternative. It's fine if they want to do that; I'll find another way to build Yasuo that works. But they effectively just removed Shiv from the game and gave us a new item with the same name. No one (with the possible exception of Vayne) ever bought Shiv for the waveclear. They bought it for the extra burst damage. Riot is gutting that part of the item to push the waveclear aspect for some reason, which has a huge impact on the champions that consistently bought Shiv for the extra burst such as Yasuo, Shaco, Tryndamere, Lucian, etc. Almost no one is going to buy the item anymore because despite what Riot thinks, people don't value waveclear that much as an adc. Vayne and Lucian might buy it but that's about it.

MilfHuntUnitXJ91 votes

he was being sarcastic, you bunghole.

In case you haven't noticed (you haven't cuz bronze) Yasuo is broken af

Slamurai Jack1 votes

A silver 5 player calling a Diamond player bronze. That's cute bro. This isn't even about Yasuo. This is about Shiv, which Riot just took a jackhammer to. Yes, Shiv was too strong, easily moreso than all the other Zeal items. But this nerf takes Shiv from being the best Zeal item to being the worst one by a significant margin. Moving Shiv from 50-150 to 30-100 is like moving Botrk from 8% to 5%. They actually lowered it from 8% to 6% and literally no one builds Botrk anymore. Shiv is going to be the same.

Stephenizgod3 votes

As long as I can remember its always been referred to as a Waveclear item. If people were buying it for burst then thats all the more reason to nerf it now. Still 50 less damage is not going to break Yasuo's burst, or anyone elses for that matter.

Slamurai Jack1 votes

50 less damage minimum. 100 less if you crit (90 for Yasuo) and 150 less once you have IE (125 for Yasuo). That is a shit ton of damage. A shiv crit in 5.23 is going to do less damage than a standard shiv proc did in 5.21 until lvl 10 and a shiv crit in 5.21 will eclipse a shiv proc in 5.23 until lvl 18, where it will then be equal in damage. They're completely butchering Shiv to the point where it will be significantly worse than it was before the marksman rework, kind of eliminating the point of reworking the item in the first place. If they didn't want people to buy Shiv for the damage, they should just have removed it from the game and given us a new item instead of gutting it into this piece of garbage and keeping the name "Statikk Shiv".

EcchiOtakuTM2 votes

Have yous een how popular it is for a damage zeal item? then have you seen a vayne with firecannon+shiv who 2 hit squishies and just AA away at tanks? It's justified, from a damage-standpoint which attracts alot of people it gives the most bang for your buck.

Last but not least it's not gutted that's still stronger than the original shiv

Slamurai Jack2 votes

Stronger when? Old Shiv did 100 damage the moment you get it. New Shiv only does 100 damage at lvl 18. Most games don't even get to lvl 18 anymore. No one is going to even build this item anymore. People jumped ship on item 3153 over a far smaller nerf.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Old shiv only did 100 damage to 3 targets, current shiv does damage to 5 targets and it's reasonable they give it a scaling to help curve it from being a buy and begin snowballing, so it's reasonable power shift. botrk is only good for tank busting on AS based champs but the nerf all due to vayne made it unreasonable(+ they should nerf vayne's true damage to 9% and revert botrk). The change to shiv just makes it a later purchase and weakens early buyers of it such as yasuo/adcs/shaco who use it as a 2nd/3rd core item after shoes for waveclear mostly .

Slamurai Jack1 votes

They already did give it a curve. Live Shiv is weaker than 5.21 Shiv until lvl 12. 5.23 Shiv will be weaker until lvl 18, where it will then be on par with 5.21 Shiv. It won't just be weaker on people who buy it early; that part is already true. Now it'll just be weaker on everybody and not even worth buying if you wanted to get it early. Most Yasuo's get their Shiv at around lvl 9. At lvl 9, Shiv will do around 48 next patch compared to the 72 it does at that level now. There's no reason to even get the item early if it only does 48 damage at lvl 9, less than half the damage it did in 5.21 while costing the same gold. They didn't just nerf the item for early Shiv buyers, they gutted it, while also making it a less attractive option on everyone else. They're basically removing Yasuo's core item from the game, and I don't like that. I don't like that one bit.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Well then that's fine, the item has been too much of a BiS zeal item aside from firecannon on cait/vayne/rengar now the other zeal items will be more appealing to get early and shiv won't be a buy and snowball item. Also adcs won't be affected much since most can just get it later, melees who buy it mainly yasuo will have to just choose to buy it later giving people more time to prevent their power spike which has also been a problem.

Slamurai Jack1 votes

They won't buy it later. They just won't buy it. They massively nerfed not only the damage on the low end but the damage on the high end as well. A Shiv crit with IE will do 125 less damage at lvl 18 once this patch goes though. The only adc I see still buying this item after the nerfs is Lucian (and maybe Vayne) because all the alternatives suck on him. I mostly just question why they made it so strong in the first place if they planned to nerf it this hard. Now it's strictly inferior to the old Shiv at every point before lvl 18.

If waveclear is 'just a bonus', get the rapidfire canon. It does more damage earlier, more MS, and slightly better stats. Or go Phantom Dancer for mitigation.

Truthfully, Shiv was too strong. Way too strong. Now it'll be reasonable and all the people whining will still buy it when appropriate.
