My biggest problem with Illaoi

The counter play to her "E" (Test of Spirits) is supposed to be fighting Illaoi to get it back. Anyone who plays top lane knows that doing that is suicide. If she manages to land her E, your only option is usually to just walk out of range and play the mini game, losing all pressure and control. Fighting her just means that now she can bash you AND the spirit at the same time. So here is what I think should happen:

  1. During a "test of spirit" Illoai can no longer damage the enemy champion except by damaging the spirit. Only a portion of the damage dealt is transferred (as normal) and if she succeeds in killing it, or if the champion leaves the area, mint game ensues. During this time, the tested enemy champion can attack Illaoi in order to win his spirit back. However, Illaoi takes reduced damage from the champion being tested.

OR

  1. Damaging Illaoi durrin g a test of spirit not only reduces the timer, but heals you for a %of your damage done.

This would make fighting her a more fair experience. The other option would be to increase the cooldown on that ability by a lot, considering how long it zones you.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't feel like an Illaoi that is 3 kills and 20+ cs down should be able to solo me under my tower because she finally landed her E and has ult.

You might be decieved by her score card because a lot of Illaoi's are running kelpto. Her E does have like a 15-20 seconds cd in the laning phase and its mana hungry. So if you can take advantage of the downtime she has little to fight back with. There are ways to let you zone out of combat less, but people don't pay attention to them. Also, people complain that she's strong but thats because they walk directly at her and fight in her ult. All simple silly mistakes

That cooldown is relatively offset though if she hits you, since you have to walk around and wait for the curse to wear off. Klepto just recently got nerfed, but yeah, I understand she has more gold than what her score shows. I can even look at her keystone to see how much extra gold she has earned.

My biggest problem though is still within the design of her E: In order to not get cursed, your spirit must live. You can help it do that by fighting Illaoi, but everyone knows that is a death sentence since you only put yourself in range to be AoE hit with your Spirit, taking extra damage and usually still ending up cursed. It makes no sense to fight her when she hits you with Test of Spirits, especially post 6.

I haven't faced many Illaoi's while I was a top laner (I get them most when I'm support and therefore fight her starting at the midgame) but what makes you think you can't fight her? Now that she draws minion aggro for using it, I strongly encourage baiting her with it while you control the wave.

Since I've picked up Top Lane recently, I can tell you people aren't always aware of the minion assault until it's too late. With a no-mobility champ like her I'd plan to use E against her.

Level 3? sure this is fine, post 6, its a death sentence. I play a lot of top lane, and I played a bit of Illaoi just to get a feel for her and see what other people were doing against her as well.

I play mostly melee tops, and I never see her first picked, just second picked after I pick melee XD.

Minion aggro isnt that effective, since she heals when she hits your spirit with tentacle slaps. :/
