Why every Riven player is "kill hungry"?

YumaS2Astral··23 votes·4,731 views

This is not a "Nerf riven plz" thread, I just want to know why every Riven player behaves like this. Seriously, they do everything possible to kill you, from unexpectedly flash-stunning you to even chasing you no matter where you go.

Once I was playing Fizz AD top, I killed Riven, then she teleported, I was backing at my tower, she flashed just to kill me, I didn't expected that she would do that because I expected to go back in time.

That said, this is one of the reasons why I hate Riven. Her players are kill hungry like shit, going as far as towerdiving you even if they were to die to the tower shots. Not to mention, many Riven players are super toxic.

Because Riven needs to be ahead, or she's useless. Riven cannot play passively, she has to get kills and be relevant mid game or else come lategame she'll just be a burden on her team.

Be more aware, I guess.

That's silly.

They need to be hungry for kills or they'll be useless. Many League players are super toxic, "muh Riven mains are jerks" is a meme perpetuated by Riven Lovejoy and the idiots who respond to his falseflags.

Most of us are just the same as anyone else, playing a champion who relies on snowballing aggressively doesn't make us jerks, and it doesn't make the champion toxic, it means we're playing an aggressive, early game champion, to win.

Riven players either are more prone to rage quitting and/or have worse connections then other lol players. Riven tops out all 126 champions for most likely to leave a game early :-/

Urgot Muh bae, why you over there? and supports rarely RQ or have bad connections apparently xD

That's weird, though I suspect it might have to do with the amount of abuse you can take in this game just for picking Riven. The boards have convinced people it's acceptable to treat Riven players like trash for some reason. I'm a Riven player and I am almost never rude in game, (I got ornery with a mod on the boards not long ago, though) and I never leave, but the few times I've wanted to, it's been because of extremely abusive teams.

If you do well as Riven your team disrespects you for playing an "easy" champion (lol), and if you do poorly, they treat you even worse, "how can you lose as RIVEN!? She has like, dashes, so clearly, she's OP, because dashes, kill yourself"

I'm paraphrasing, but you get it.

Riven players are some of the biggest assclowns and douchebags in the entire game. You have been in multiple games with me where I've crushed the skull of a Riven player and they either talked mad shit to everyone or afk'd. Literally the only player that has ever afk'd against me because I was tearing their heads off was a Riven player.

I understand you don't like being lumped in with these chode-slurpers, but the stereotype exists because yeah, Riven players are often some of the biggest douchebags in the game. I wouldn't try to defend them, not when there are assclown Riven mains on this very board who run around being assholes.

ShinTwist1 votes

Tyrndamere, Nasus, Talon, Vayne, etc. We've had great times in game with all of them. Yay for anecdotes.

The stereotype exists largely because of the boards. There was a time a long fucking while ago when picking Riven in game didn't mean the other four randoms on your team would spend the entire game describing in detail how much of a faggot you are, or sounding off with a round of 'kill yourself's every time you die.

Also a large portion of this board is clownery and nonsense. Riven Lovejoy is no worse than Hatedaddy, and also probably a false flagging jerk. Even if he's not false flagging, he's clearly a troll, so it's like, who cares?

There's data on Tryndamere and Vayne that supports a large portion of their playerbase being toxic as well. That silly chart places Vayne as the second most likely to leave. There was a list of each champion's players ordered by the ones most often disciplined for toxicity and Tryndamere scored pretty high (and note, by the way, that I play Tryndamere and feel no need to defend his players). Talon and Nasus I have no idea.

You're just speculating that Riven mains are toxic, afk'ing shitlords because of the poor little abuse they suffered. While it could be true, the only reason you're more inclined to believe it is you play Riven, lol.

Riven mains are monsters, lad.

ShinTwist1 votes

Actually, I'm more inclined to believe it because of my own experiences playing the champion. The kind of shit you get for playing Riven in solo queue could make a Christmas elf toxic. Sidenote, toxic is a shitty buzzword, and I dislike it.

Dog, I play Darius, lol.

I pick Darius in ranked and people constantly tell me how to play him and talk shit if I don't do what they think I should be doing.

Yet Darius does not have the hearsay or the data supporting a level of faggotry on par with Riven's.

ShinTwist1 votes

Because the community at large likes Darius players. It was never like this before the boards got a hold of Riot's buzzwords and started using them non-stop. There's no weird memetic hatred for Darius players.

The community does not treat abusing Darius players as okay. It does not take a moment to pop into any thread where someone has a question about trying to improve their Darius and tell them that Darius players are cancer and not to be one.

It's apples and oranges. I don't get the kind of shit I get while playing Riven while playing as Shaco, a champion literally designed to piss people off.

It even applies to the big name players. Box Box, who is by all accounts a nice guy, is treated by the boards as an egotistical shitlord, despite being humble and immediately owning up to his mistakes when he makes them in game, while Hawke, also by most accounts a decent fellow, gets no such treatment. Hawke being the Darius version of Box Box.

kJs2 votes

It's more like. In Game Riven Player Faggotry => In boards Riven QQ threads => Hate Riven Bandwagon Popularity => Excessive Hate for Riven and 100% of her players.

Darius is quite easy to quite once you're above Diamond level with decent ping. He's not as useful or as annoying as a Riven either. He doesn't have a lot of the disruptive potential that Riven's kit has.

edit: Just checked the leave rate for NA right now. Riven is # 4 in leave rate here and now.

Riven is not really that much of an "only early game/snowball" champion anymore. It's been a while she scales very well into lategame, notably since arpen was changed, item 3074 released, which is already quite some time. Riven =/= Renekton for instance Yes, she is prone to heavy snowballing and roflstomping people midgame if she gets the slightliest ahead, kinda like Akali Irelia ; but she does scale really well without. The burst and threat generated by a flash stun Riven lategame is really huge. She can instagib carries and clean up tanks afterwhile (shield + lifesteal on top of an AD-arpen based build works wonders to deal with tanky champions). She becomes also one of the strongest duellists in the game.

"Riven is bad lategame" IS A MYTH, people.

but riven gets no late game if she doesnt get fed early ... thats the entire point here

but this it the worst thing ever for a champion like riven to be so snowball reliant

her only real counterplay is baiting her cooldowns and capitalizing on that ... but if she is ahead thats not possible and when she is behind you dont even have to worry about her much

so eithe she has barely any counterplay cause she snowballs .... or she has simply low power cause she doesnt and even her strenghts can become weaknesses

this is bs imo

She does. She doesn't need snowball, she likes it and works very well with it, but she can scale with farm as well.

Knight SoIaire 3 votes

every champion scales with gold but not every champion can keep up with other champions by simly farming

if riven doesnt get kills and others do ... there is no way for her to catch others in terms of simple power untill realy late game ... and she can be bullied away from said farm

the only exception is when riven is left farming while there is a 5v4 stalling contest in midlane in which case whoever is on top and farming gets a gold and level advantage ... but thats not much of a champion's power as the insane fail on midlane

owerall its realy hard for riven to get ack up ... as everything in this game its possible but not likely to happen

Because that's how she works. You either go aggressive mode or wait until opponent slowly outscales you.

Except this isn't true at all

Riven outscales most things because of how stupid high her AD ratios are combined with offense -> defense skill

If her shield had a higher base value and didn't scale with AD then yea she'd fall off

Exactly, she scales best with gold, not xp. She benefits more from kill trades.

Riven will not outscale most people, unless it's lane bullies that are mostly picked just to make Riven just as useless as you in the late game.

It is true. She needs her items to be useful. And if she can't buy them in time she will turn into trash and can't do anything.

That total AD Q change was actually needed to tone down her early t0ns of damage. She used to wreck even harder back in S3.

Strat7 votes

Well from a strategic perspective, Riven is happy to trade kills. A kill on Riven makes a bigger difference than a kill on most other top laners. It gets her ahead in gold faster, allowing her to get her initial item build sooner. Sure, she won't beat you any easier, but when she roams to the mid/bot lane she'll be able to wreck them with her extra earned gold. Obviously Riven prefers to get a kill and not die, but it's still OK to trade.

But the biggest reason Rivens are kill hungry early is because very few champions can match Riven's all-in at levels 2-6. Some champions beat her at level 1 (GP and Teemo are two such champions) of course, but that's why most Rivens start at wolves to get to their powerspike level 2. The only champion that I can think of that has an equal level 2-3 trade is Renekton, but in an all-in (or extended trade) Riven will still win.

Not sure if downvote or upvote.

First part is true. Second part is bullshit.

Riven is crap at all-inning pre 6. She is situationally good against very weak/ranged laners lvl 1-2 cause she has mobility most melee champions don't. She is good at trading blows starting lvl 3-4. Her strength relies in her free trades, because she shields the damage she could take, stuns/knocbacks you and you can't do shit to trade back.

Random list of champions that will destroy Riven lvl 1-3 in an all-in: Trundle/Olaf/Renekton/Darius/Master Yi/Volibear/Udyr/Jax/Wukong/Pantheon

I mean, you don't all in pre 6 as Riven. You kite around and harass, it's completely different.

Post 6 is another story.

Strat1 votes

Eh some of them I can agree with (Udyr, Renekton, Trundle, Darius) but the others are either even or weaker. As for Wukong? No way in hell. Wukong can win at level 1 if Riven chooses to take ignite and not do a camp, but after level 1 if he hasn't laid down sufficient damage Riven will win any all-in.

I mean, if you're talking 100% HP all ins, sure, that's an entirely different story. But if the enemy's on 75% HP after an initial trade and is chugging a potion, Riven can win an all in by virtue of the fact that she can take all your HP before you can take hers.

Idk I beat a Riven top as Wukong once pretty easily. Could have been a bad Riven.

Strat2 votes

If you scored enough damage on her at level 1 you would win, otherwise it's just a bad Riven. Wukong simply doesn't have comparable damage output to Riven once she has 2 or more skills.

Wukong can win at level 6 if Riven's not careful though. Wukong's ult can beat Riven's ult if she's not full HP. So if you played safe til 6 without losing too much HP and won at the level 6 power spike I can see that as a possibility.

kJs1 votes

Yeah I was going to say that.

Riven's CC at early levels lets her trade really easily with Wukong. CC chaining your knock ups and stuns will make most of Nimbus Strike's AS boost and ArmPen debuff on you useless. Riven's Shield gives her enough extra "health" to completely block damage from Wukong's biggest burst ability (Q) Crushing Blow. A decent Riven will just CC + run away with her 4 dashes if Wukong decides to harass. The monkey would simply waste mana trying to harass her.

Basically, you chug potions and let Riven push lane whilst farming as much as you can - buying Flask and three health pots. Once you've got a Pickaxe you should have a much higher kill potential on a Riven with you having your ult. Her only weakness is, really, having her dashes on cooldown.

I've noticed a lot of really bad Riven players try to harass me under tower and fail miserably because tower shots will hurt her too much combined with Wukong's Es and Qs.

iamthegoatofwar1 votes

trundle can trade fairly well early on too.

Kuroi867 votes

Because Riven only really scales well offensively, defensively speaking, Riven doesn't do jack. Unless she snowballs and gets her items while you're still struggling, you're going to out scale her due to the nature of her kit

Prospector Pete4 votes

Maybe because they think that if they get 1 kill they can carry the game super hard and will become unstoppable.

Because she's kill-reliant. I do the same thing as Darius. I flashed under turret on a Vladimir who I got low for the quick Q>Ignite for the kill, because I needed that kill to snowball. I came back to lane and killed him four more times. Kills mean a lot to champions like Riven or Darius.
