Is Riot Nintendo ca. 2006?

In trying to articulate what changes have been bothering me about this game (a regular pastime), I hit on something. A lot of the newer stuff in this game looks cool, and I see the appeal in it; Taliya and her champion spotlight, for example. And yet, looking beyond the pretty graphics, something is just kind of... meh.

Is this a little like the changes Nintendo went through? Back in the day Nintendo was the premier gaming experience bar none. It had great graphics, it appealed to serious gamers, but it was also approachable, imaginative... you get my drift. But then the gamecube culminating in the Wii and the WiiU just made everything so kid-oriented and really skewed the demo. The league playerbase is aging; true there are younger players, but it just seems odd to me that this game feels marketed to people much younger than what League was marketed to back in beta.

Thoughts?

Does anyone remember how we found this game in the first place? (marketing is hit-or-miss)
