just curious, why do supports are designed to only cater adcs?
Why not have items that benefit mages, bruisers or hell even assassins? ADC's hogging all the resources aren't fun. If ardent is broke why not make a ardent for every class?

Because riot wanted it that way.
Riot thinks that supports are and should only ever be capable of supporting; thats why when a champion becomes a support (such as zyra or nautilus) its usually a death sentance because from that moment on theyre going to be balanced as supports.
Which means lower everything and a reliance on their ADC to actually do anything.

they benefit anyone they want to, ended up supporting a fiora earlier cuz my adc was garbage(fi carried) adcs benefit most, duelists are shortly after, and everyone else follows(tanks probably last)
An assassin typically won't have a support piggy backing them as they're flanking the backline. Even if a support item gave an assassin lethality, odds are the assassin won't get that benefit without it being as broken (assuming a wide ranged knight vow-like effect) since they're usually far from each other in a teamfight.
Also in that case, what would abuse the lethality more, the assassin or the ADC stacked with a lethality giving support item + ardent?
Point is, keep in mind whatever support items give to other champions, the ADC also abuses.
What the fuck. Since when are shields and heals only designed to help the adc? You're better off healing and shielding the 22-0 assassin or tank than the 2 item 0-10-0 adc.
Because supports babysit the adc during the early game, not the mage.
If you find that a support is ONLY helpful to the adc during the mid and late game, they're doing it wrong.
