Is anyone else getting aggravated at matchmaking lately?

It seems like every game I play is completely one sided as far as the skill of the players go. I'm sick of feeling like "there's nothing I can do to win this game"

It's one sided because the game is fking broken. Because of the insane damage, you get matched in lane vs your counter you'll get raped even if his skill level is lower than you. Oh it's not you who got matchmaked like this? Don't worry there's a lane out there that is

I have laned against a master Yasuo otp two or three times, and I promise that's the most tilting experience possible in this game. Usually I destroy Yasuo players but those guys somehow dodge all abilities while dealing literally double the damage all the way from level 2...

Since the champions are picked AFTER you get matched against someone there's no way this could be fixed. He could as well have played soraka toplane full movespeed he just bough.

This is why Riot needs to change how champ selection and the Q system works.

Starcraft243ver2 votes

You can't, counterpicking and building a team that actually makes sens is 25% of the game, even if most people are not aware of that.

If you remove this it's just not the same game anymore.

Counter picking is over rated and potentially unfair since we are not organized like LCS but we are solo q. Meaning we dont pick out of order so it is fairly random whether or not you can/cannot counter pick. Building a team comp can happen outside of the current Q system.

I feel like there is some kind of anti-winstreak system. Every time I get a solid winstreak I suddenly get teams made up of absolute idiots making the game pretty much impossible to win. I feel like most of those games would be lost even if I was Faker, since everyone else on my team has lost their matchups and picked a trash teamcomp even before there's a chance to do anything for me. I had a 70% Azir winstreak in ranked, and suddenly this happens and I get 4 losses in a row.

It feels like the system intentionally places me with bad teammates that I have to carry instead of just putting me in a higher mmr game.

La Belle Sauvage3 votes

I feel that too. "I feel like there is some kind of anti-win streak system. " Not sure if it's the case, but man it sure seems that way.

CloakAndGrenade2 votes

Arrogance can cause that. You absolutely curb stomp three or four games in a row, and you get cocky. You start doing different things, making riskier plays, and making mistakes that you normally wouldn't. Pride blinds. This doesn't mean you suddenly feed and auto-loose, but it means you're gonna be more likely to make a mistake that prevents you from snowballing a lead, shutting down and enemy, taking an objective, compensating for the mistakes of your allies, whatever. And if your MMR is high, you're accounting for a larger portion of your teams total MMR, which means even small mistakes by you echo down the line because you may in fact be your teams best player. The two compound on each other, until tilt factors in and it becomes "i gotta carry syndrome". Mindset can have drastic effects on your games.

That's an excellent point. I'm prone to arrogance at times. Especially when I know a matchup is favorable.

However, the sad part? Is after going 3-0 I started to worry. I thought "oh man soon I'm going to be paired with a less experienced ADC." And the 50% equalization myth / anxiety began to creep in.

But, to your point I didn't adjust to my expectation. Instead I went in a couple times expecting the ADC to follow up (based on last year and preseason) instead of realizing they might get reconize that we have a win condition if they go in too. A couple times that contributed to putting our lane behind.

My biggest problem right now is being patient and adjusting my play to bronze ADCs.

SB Arneeman1 votes

Arrogance doesn't cause my Jinx to take Glacial augment and then go 0/7/0 and afk.

Arrogance doesn't cause my Trundle support to flash towards the enemy base only to place a pillar at the enemy adc during a level 1 invade - giving them first blood on the enemy midlaner and setting all lanes behind.

Arrogance does not make my toplaner play Lulu vs Illaoi and get the amazing cs score of 34 in an 18 minute game.

Guess what, that's my 3 last ranked losses with Azir.http://euw.op.gg/summoner/userName=SB%20Arneeman)

Once you get about more than 50% winrate you literally get people with low %winrate in order to achieve... balance?? That is actually a fact.

The OP doesn't even spell check his post, and provides no evidence for the claims he makes, so you'll have to forgive me If I don't take what he says as 'fact'.

SilentBomber3 votes

Actually a lot of factors contribute in the quality of matchmaking.

  1. The damage is entirely the highest ever in all seasons. That is why,if you as adc get ahead with FB and gold the game has many chances to be one sided.

  2. Top lane is less popular. When the ADCs scale better since they got the cheapest items in the game and more base damage,Top lane (especially the fighting class) from the other hand has to pay the most expensive items to scale.

  3. Top lane has become less popular. That means old top laners have switched to other roles where they suck.A strong example is,that poor Jinx who died 3 times in 4 minutes like a monkey while being in Gold.Since you are Gold, you should have a good basic knowledge of when and how to play safe and not just die again and again with the excuse "i haven't played for a month".You don't have to strangle for kills.Just be safe.

4)The matchmaking forces a 50% winning rate on you.If you have a 60%(for example) winning rate, suddenly and oddly you will start getting more and more bad players in your team. You lose the game, you lose mmr and that's it.If you start getting 1-2 losses,be sure more losses will follow because such is the matchmaking system. You can't have only winning streaks.

  1. Final and most important. The game has become less fun. When you go to the borders and post about Blitzcrank's hitbot and actually suggest a fix in which a Rioter comments positively, you expect a reaction from the company as well. The company completely ignores you as a way of "fck off" and you have to play ranked games again with the mentality "nothing changes.Same shit again.".

That is my opinion.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

I agree there are a lot of factors, want to make a post about this but don't have the time this week. I'll get it sorted out eventually and hopefully articulate some of your points as well in a post.

with regards to #4 that's not how it works. It doesn't force anything on you. It tries to balance the teams and you just happen to be the best person on your team vs another team with a lower average MMR than you have. I personally think that the system gets something scrambled between rank and MMR when matching people, causing people to get matched closer to their rank despite having a higher or lower MMR. But I don't have any evidence to substantiate this and I don't want to spread misinformation, so take my idea with a grain of salt.

Oh you're talking about one-sided games? Those are the dullest of games

I just happened to play one game where we just cheesed into the enemy base and killed like they're less than bots. Hell even our Vlad stopped attacking the enemies because they just can't do anything and Shyvana got 9 kills while pushing bot lane till she took inhib, no backs.

I don't really know if it's just the players are unskilled, or if games are so biased towards one team and not the other.

I miss the action and the great plays and people with skill are the ones to win. I've only seen ONE great play in the last few weeks :(

This is still early season, matchmaking is not going to be good when you have lower ranked player who already climbed to their original elo, facing much higher elo players who are just doing their placements.

4262872 votes

Its like this every season. In the beginning al the players coming back go straight to ranked.....lose elo...then ragequit game until next season.

La Belle Sauvage2 votes

As a Support main I agree. I'm matched with ADC who have little or no bot lane experience. In just slightly less than half of games I out dmg them or have a better KDA. I realize KDA isn't everything, but sometimes (at least in low Elo) it's an indication of a lack of experience in the lane.

The difference between Silver ADC and a Bronze ADC is large. While Bronze and Silver divisions are low elo and are looked down upon by most (understandably) I still seem to get stuck with seemingly new players who might know the build but not much else.

I miss Silver 4. Funny thing to write but it's true. A majority Silver ADCs at least double my damage output, even when we lose. And the jungler at least ganks.

In Bronzie land out of the last 11 games? I've seen our jungler 3 times. And only once did they survive their botched gank. Btw this isn't a dig on junglers as much as it is on my division's players.

And yes, I've make my fair share of mistakes. A few times it was my fault we lost lane. And if course I need to improve a ton.

I wish we could be paired with similar experienced bot laner's.

I realize this is also much debated, but I am growing weary of being punished for win streaks. I went 4-0 in placements. The next three ADCs I played with were sub par (even in bronze).

I don't know what the answer is but I've been unhappy with matchmaking for a while now.

Lastly, I wish Riot would do away with placements. If you finish silver that should become your your divisional floor.

The saying goes if you can't beat Bronzies than you deserve to be there. And while not completely wrong it's too broad.

A. I beat Bronzies all year last season and climbed into Silver. That alone should be proof enough to let me start in S5.

All Riot accomplishes now (for me) is lengthier grind to just get back to where I was last season.

HalcyonDweller2 votes

I feel your pain, matchmaking and allies feel all over the place. I've given up entirely on playing solo and I only play with at least a few friends at this point.

The rank reset and being placed lower than you climbed to last season seems really frustrating to me, although I haven't played ranked much anyways. I can see how it feels horrible for people, and being forced to grind when you had already earned that place seems really unfair, especially if you get placed in bottom-of-the-barrel ranks with players who don't know what they are doing.

Also with regards to being punished for win-streaks, it's not that you're being punished for them, it's that going on a win-streak causes your MMR to accelerate upwards and then oscillate back downwards as you climb and fall around your temporary skill level. It still feels like getting punished though and that sucks. Maybe Riot should apply some calculus to the system so that it can balance us out as we climb instead of letting us jump higher upwards and then suffer for it.

Someday I'm going to go in-depth with some math and make a post showing how the matchmaking seems to work vs how it probably should work. today is not that day though, unfortunately I need to whip out the calculus books and review some things first.

That doesn't mean much though. Before you go into it I fully understand the importance and impact of gold and gold disparity. But look at my match history and tell me that the last 5 games weren't total stomps.

My last game was 30 -14 kill score, 2 drag 8 towers - 5 towers, and only a 1k gold variance.

Skip a match (that was still a stomp) and go to the jhin match; 17 -27, 2 drag 2 tower - 1 baron 2 drag 10 towers, gold was even until 15 minutes.

Next game 29 -20, 2 drag 7 towers - 1 drag 3 towers, gold was even at 15 minutes but still an obvious one sided win

Next game only a 5k disparity at 15 mins; 9 -34 kill score, 1 drag 1 tower - 1 baron 2 drags 10 towers.

These are not fair or fulfilling games, these are complete one sided losses (even one sided wins that aren't enjoyable). These are games where anivia with only a tear spams chat the enemy is cheating because she does no damage to them... These are games where 2/2/2 fiora (in a 17 kill game) lost t1 and t2 and t3 top but insists on forcing team fights at a DEAD t1 top thinking if we win we might magically make up for losing an inhib.. These are games where 1/12 "adc gnar" insists we don't need a tank but that we need "adc gnar" because our 1/16 botlane only has 15 cs at 11 minutes...

Matchmaking is fucked. And no amount of communication or shot calling or hard/hyper carrying is going to fix that.

When you're talking about a stomp or not, the two main things you look at are team comp and team gold. For the most part, whether or not you have an outer tower up is mostly irrelevant past a certain point, except for its gold value. Really even the second turrets are the same eventually. Sure, you lose a bit of influence on the map, but if you couldn't defend that turret, then you didn't have the influence it is meant to provide anyway.

Take a look at your 30-14 game. Take a good long look at it. How can you call that anything but an even game? Your top laners are even at 2 completed items. Your junglers are even at 2 complete items. Your mid laner is ahead of theirs, but only by one item, and he's squishy. He's still killable. And a big chunk of your damage is actually from him, so if they manage to catch him out or focus him down in a fight, they can still win fights. Their ADC is a bit ahead of yours, but not much. Your supports have a disparity in gold, but not as much in itemization, with both of them at one completed item a piece.

You may have won this game, but it could have just as easily gone the other way. You guys were stronger than they were, but only barely.

You may have won this game, but it could have just as easily gone the other way. You guys were stronger than they were, but only barely.

You have a point with being able to defend it, but when it comes to that you have to look at the rest of the map. If you have lost your other t1 towers, then there is a reason you can not defend the outer tower, namely map control. And that point only comes after the map control has changed to such a significant degree that team fights are no longer based objectively.

The top laners were roughly even with 20% participation as well... So if (from blind analysis) you assume that they are locked in their split pattern, you can remove them from the team/game analysis. All of a sudden 30-14 becomes 25-10 which is an even greater disparity showing even more unfair "stomping"...

Your analysis of the team as far of "he's squishy and still killable" is not a healthy estimation of the game. You can look at that from a balance perspective early game, but after a few levels or so it becomes irrelevant. If you do want to compare then how can you say that a 9/2/10 Morde is comparable to a 1/2/3 wu (with NO boots and an IE)? That just doesn't make sense.

If your analysis was founded, then by what your saying it should have still been an even fight, but it was not. Not even close. It was completely one sided. That is my point that I think you are overlooking, gold disparity doesn't show anything towards fair matchmaking. It should from a statistical point of view, but it does not in a real world scenario. The discussion has never been on an analysis of gold generation nor has it been a discussion on itemization.

The discussion, and the issue at hand is that a 4k damage wu that doesn't buy boots and rushes IE does not belong in the same game as me (or their bot lane duo, who was pretty good). The issue is that an anivia that doesn't know why she does no damage when she doesn't have a single ap item doesn't belong in the same game as me. The issue is that 1/16 botlane with 15 cs at 11 minutes does not belong in the same game as me. The issue is that 1/12 "adc gnar" doesn't belong in the same game as me. The issue is that 24% participation fiora that would rather team fight over a DEAD t1 when the same lanes t2 is dead and our inhib is down, and the jg and midlane that follow her to tdm over literally nothing, no objectives repeatedly from 15 minutes to 25 minutes into the game... The issue is that a 3/16 botlane and 0/5 jg... Do not belong in the same game as me.

The issue is not the gold disparity as you have pointed out, the issue is the player skill driving the champions with the gold disparity. The issue is matchmaking. Not gold income. To further illustrate my point, you brought up the 30-14 game. But the gold disparity was only 1k difference (if that?) at 15 minutes like you mentioned. So then why was it so one sided? There just was no chance we were losing that game, none. We couldn't have thrown if we had wanted to. On paper sure we should have been roughly even, but there just is no chance it was a fair fight in reality.

1-9 placements where I was mostly support. We'd win lane (or go even), but lose game. Had a game as Support Alistar where the ADC blamed me for losing lane because "I wasn't doing my combo." What combo, she (was an ADC like Caitlyn, I think) never said, though I assume it was the W-Q. Well, I did do it, but I was mostly just Headbutting Draven away from getting CS (the way the past few games had gone, I needed something to amuse me). I was saving the Q for when their Leona jumped on our ADC. But that, clearly, is why we lost lane, and not because our ADC decided that me headbutting a high health Draven away from a low health Caitlyn is a perfect time to engage and follow me into the battle. Especially with the Leona who managed to finish her off with one combo before I had managed to turn around.

Pro Tip, if you are low health, and your support does something aggressive to lock down someone with a lot of damage? RUN AWAY AND GO BACK TO BASE! DO NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT ENGAGE!

One mid Brand game where I did not die to Talon (and might have gotten a kill or three along the way). Doesn't matter, Talon (and another assassin) got fed on everyone else (I was like 4/1, ended 6/8).

One miserable jungle Amumu game (Amumu is pretty much my go-to jungle, as he's one of my favorite characters to play) that I don't like to think about where I couldn't do a damn thing right the whole game. First, I wasn't ganking enough (despite putting pressure on Teemo top, and getting our Lucian a double kill in botlane that he died for). Then, because I was trying to gank (and not getting a lot of payoff with a Teemo minefield I didn't want to enter and being near top when bot was in trouble or near bot when mid needed help, always arriving too late to help), I wasn't farming, meaning I was 4 levels behind the enemy jungler (it was someone with a quick clear... Udyr maybe?), so I couldn't help take dragons or anything useful. The Lucian on my team was particularly understanding. At the end game screen, where I was apologizing for not having the best game and being severely unlucky in ganking (I arrive and there's nothing for me to do, Udyr arrives and get a double kill), Lucian said "Oh, we ALL saw know what you did, Amumu. We all saw." Aww, thanks, guy, that's just what I needed to hear.

So, no, I'm not getting aggravated at losing and getting shit teammates, no not at all, everything is fine here. Didn't you hear? I'm not crazy, I swear. EVERYTHING IS FINE! FINE! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

CloakAndGrenade3 votes

Don't know what this has to do with the OP, but I'll respond anyway. As a fellow support main, I can tell you that constantly wasting Alistar's headbutt like that almost certainly cost you mana. With your full combo, you keep draven in the air long enough for him to come back down on a cait trap. This would not only have been more effective in denying him farm, but would have allowed your ADC to set-up for kills. If she was anticipating this, and dropping traps expecting you to Q, she likely wasted ALOT of mana as well, as cait traps are very mana hungry in the early levels, which leave her vulnerable to leona's engage because she wont have the mana to net out of the zenith blade. Also, Once leone hits her zenith blade, your knockup does not have the duration to deny the Q follow up to stun her, and then draven comes in with the stand-aside, and its over. Those two have ALOT of early game damage, and mana is not an issue for either of them unless they are spamming abilities on minions.

To comment on your second point, your engage will bait your adc into engaging. You have to learn to expect this, because the ADC trusts you, they trust your judgement, and they think that if you are going in, they should do, or at least get some autos off to help you. Some people think that the ADC is in charge bot lane, but its quite the other way around in most cases. They see their boss go in and combo, their first instinct is gonna be to combo with you and get damage off, since that's what you hired them for.

If anything, you should simply save all of your mana to deny leona's engage, proc relic shield and your passive to sustain, and just make it through the laning phase. At no point until late game, unless the leona and draven are awful, does an alister cait beat them in lane. However, if draven isn't fed, he's incredibly weak in the mid game, where cait hits her first power spike. Playing passive until you get jungle assistance and snowball cait, or until cait is high enough level that she can trap-wall the turret off and farm safely while you roam is by far a better bet.

Though, you'd have to stop playing ARAM and actually work on your summoners rift skills to really improve :P, ARAM is fun, but if you're developing ARAM habits, they'll show up in your SR games and hurt you.

Hope this helps!

revliledpembroke1 votes

Clearly, I've been aggravated by my matchmaking experiences (or my experiences I've had because of matchmaking).

And if the ADC is stupid enough that my attempt to save her leads her to believe we're engaging, that's her own fault.

I also haven't played on SR consistently for YEARS because it's impossible for me to actually have fun on that map anymore. The match I like to point out as being the issue is one where I tried Caitlyn for the first time in a lane, only my support decided to duo top instead. My jungle tried, but he was still jungling. And I got three and four man ganked. Consistently. I might have ended up with more deaths than assists (and almost certainly 0 kills). Why go back to that? Why go back to being flamed for doing/not doing something (sometimes at the same time!)?

ARAM is better. The flames are less.

Considering my last 20 games seem to have been within a pretty small gold difference for around 50%, and there have been a few off games where we've gotten comebacks in the midlate game from a large gold deficit, our experiences seem to be pretty different.

One important aspect in the comeback matches seem to be people taking on a leading role, making calls on objectives and outpositioned enemy players. The best way to counteract your trend is to become this leader yourself and hope teammates listen.

I completely agree, matchmaking feels like someone rolled some dice lately. Games are more snowbally than ever- which contributes to this a bit.

However there are just too many people where they don't belong in the ladder. If everyone in the game is asking someone to chill and farm under turret- yet they continue to just feed and ruin the game. Its a huge problem.

If its not feed its afk, if its not that its intentional trolling- or unintentional trolling. If its not that its a duo smurf, or duo jungle/laner camping the fuck out of someone and they don't know how to play around it.

Right now riot is paying far too much attention to toxic behavior- vs toxic play. If players can just int their faces off when they should know better, and ruin the game for everyone else on their team... and riot does nothing about - its a huge middle finger to the player base.

I play a ton, and these games are without question worse than they have ever been. Rarely, like 1 in 12 games I think I feel like it was a actually a good game, and not one of these one sided stomps. Its seriously insane how bad it is right now. Like crazy crazy crazy bad.

I can't imagine being a new player right now. The game has such a huge learning curve already, then its toxic because of all this frustration, then they are just getting shit on because they don't know what they are doing and are placed too high by provisionals. Its a fucking mess.

THEN on top of that silver 5 has some sort of safety net so you don't get booted from it. So the bottom of silver is all low bronze players that just haven't gotten booted because its too difficult to get removed.

Beyond even that, riot tried to keep your winrate at 50% instead of your games well matched... so that is a circus.

Then beyond THAT, promo games further place you with worse players on your team. Now THOSE games are literally unwinnable unless you get lucky and the system fucks up. Nearly all of these games are shit lately, but promo games... holy fuck are they godlike bad.

Right now, riot is just trolling the low elo. If you are on a longstanding account, just re-roll a new one and you'll probly climb. I think its related to older accounts or something. Not sure, something is seriously fucked up beyond all recognition.

Anyone who disagrees just doens't know what they are talking about. Its insanely bad right now.
