PSA: Placements are not intended to bring you to your previous rank

mirAcIe··17 votes·3,113 views

Placements are here to place you into a League according to your MMR after the SOFT RESET and 10 games of slightly higher MMR gain/loss. The amount of "bonus" MMR gained/lost decreases from the first game being the most important (the most MMR gain/loss) and the 10th game the least (almost no bonus MMR gain).

oops you got unlucky and lost your first 5 then won the last 5, have fun losing MMR despite going even 5-5

or

oops you got lucky and won your first 5 then lost the last 5, have fun gaining MMR despite going even 5-5

totally should work like that guys

{quoted}

it's been around since the elo system where you could actually see it happen live (because your MMR was shown)

at least with the elo system you didn't have to get a 66% win rate at arbitrary points to be able to progress, either you had a positive win rate or you didn't

mirAcIe4 votes

Oops, you got unlucky in your first 10 games, who cares? People play hundreds of games per season, you have literally THE WHOLE YEAR for that. Why do you expect to get desired rank in just 10 games. The whole idea of it is dumb. If you "belong" somewhere you will get there, simple as that. BTW I agree with LP system being stupid. Although it would not change your placement if we had MMR based Leagues, at least it would be transparent to players. With all that talk about clarity people do not understand what happens during placements although it would be obvious if we saw MMR. Some players are bound to only get high bronze/low silver because of how low their MMR was after the reset. But they don't know it and they keep coming to forums and bitching about promos being unfair. They just don't know how they work. They think they can sink to the bottom of MMR ladder and by magic have it all erased in just 10 games.

I don't really think you can grasp how difficult it is to get out of bronze once you are in it unless you have been there when you aren't supposed to be there.

Onegarion1 votes

I've done it twice so there is that.

mirAcIe1 votes

I can. I was in Bronze when I was a new player. And I climbed out of it naturally just by getting better at the game. There is no standing goal of climbing out of Bronze, it will only happen when you'll get better. It goes for every League.

PSA : Placements are intended to drop you an entire tier because fuck you. Girlfriend's been in gold for 100-200 games and she gets dropped to 5 divisions. What the fuck for? So she can prove she belongs where she spent 200 fucking games? I haven't even bothered with my placements. I'll end up in bronze and then I'll have to climb up just like last season so I can get to where I've been for 100 games. This soft reset bullshit is retarded.

mirAcIe6 votes

This is a new season. Nobody said you can have your previous rank. Of course you have to prove it once again, IT'S A NEW FUCKING SEASON

A Slime Appears2 votes

I've been silver 3 all the way up to the day the season reset, what the fuck makes you think I need to prove the next day that I belong in silver 3 just because a patch went out? Hurrdurr.

Narasimha3 votes

Because if you actually earned that rank, you'll have no trouble climbing back to it. Its freaking silver, you'll be fine.

Zenthon Prime1 votes

We get that. What doesn't make sense to many of use is why our MMR is so low is we were doing just fine, usually succeeding even, in our old division. I was a Silver III with a 70% winrate on my main champ (which I usually was able to pick) and respectively positive LP gains, but I'll likely get Bronze II or I for absolutely no reason. And that REALLY wouldn't make sense since I originally was put in Silver V back in August and have gotten way better.

The system would be totally fine is MMR, you know, worked. People with positive winrates and longstanding positions in a division belong there, not a full tier lower. Frankly, I'd rather have no ladder reset at all than to be subject to a broken MMR system that is going to end up wasting 50 games climbing to where I actually belong. I won't even have trouble climbing, I just don't want to waste 40 hours like that.

Cerbearus1 votes

With the way the rank system works you can go up fairly easily but it is harder to go down, leaving a net of the entire playerbase slowly crawling upwards. Higher ranks start to lose their meaning when everyone is in them. The reset every year is to drop everyone back down a bit and make them prove again that they can play at a higher level. My placements dropped me from G3 to G5, and now im back to the exact spot i was in after 1 day. Earn your rank man, can't have everything given to you.

Deep Terror Nami2 votes

I know and I've been telling everyone complaining that it's based off your MMR, but I didn't know the matches were in order of importance by MMR. Where did you find that out?

mirAcIe4 votes

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

I've been procrastinating pretty hard because I don't want to fight out of a bronze colored hole, so I guess it's good I'm 3-0 so far if this is the case.

mirAcIe1 votes

Yep, winning your first games does help you secure a higher placement (or at least prevents you from getting placed super low) even if you go on a losing streak afterwards, but at the same time it should be pretty easy for someone who belongs higher because initial games would be against really low ranked opponents.

This is completely false, I won 4 of my first 6 games and ended up 6-4 overall. I dropped from s5 to 0 lp b4. I had well over 1k wins last season with a 50%+ winrate at the end of the preseason. Now I can't get 2 people on a team to even agree that we are playing ranked let alone do Dragon or take any lane objectives. From now on I am picking solo pushing jungles till I get back out of bronze.

mirAcIe1 votes

This does not disprove what I said, because there is no way to know how much MMR you had in Silver 5. You can be allowed to stay in Silver 5 as long as your MMR doesn't drop to Bronze 5 level, so it could be at around Bronze 4 level for all we know. Silver 5 is just a pretty facade.

Tansen1 votes

False again, I actually climbed back to silver during the preseason and was on a winning streak when they did the reset. Along with the fact that there was no clamping in season 4, so if your MMR dropped below your tier you got demoted.

mirAcIe1 votes

You're wrong. First of all clamping is a different thing which prevented you from normal LP gains in division 1 due to low MMR. Second of all, when 5th division demotions were introduced (in season 4), they worked exactly like I siad they were. To be demoted from 5th division your MMR had to be as low as FULL TIER below this division (Silver 5 with Bronze 5 MMR)

You can learn more here: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/League_system

Tansen1 votes

Then explain to me why I Never received the warning that I was in danger of demotion? I'm currently around 900 MMR after losing over 300 from my demotion to b4 from placement matches where I had a positive win ratio with 4 of my 6 wins coming in the first 5 games I played.

As I said you're original comment was and still is false. Without the 300+ MMR loss from placement demotion I would be over 1200 mmr putting me in at minimum b1 and no where near 0 LP in b4.

As I said you're original comment was and still is false. Without the 300+ MMR loss from placement demotion I would be over 1200 mmr putting me in at minimum b1 and no where near 0 LP in b4.

Because probably it wasn't near the demotion. Having Bronze IV MMR while being in Silver V does not lead to demotion. Only having Bronze V MMR does and then you'll get your warning. And you'll still be demoted to Bronze 1, not Bronze V (even though your MMR would be a Bronze V). So you see, this system is pretty confusing and super forgiving.

First you have to realize that after you finish placement matches you're not being "demoted". You can't be demoted from something you don't have. When season 4 ended, your rank has been archived. You no longer have it, that's it. Then system takes your MMR at the end of the season adds 1250 (or 1200, not sure about that) and divides it by 2. That's where you'll start next season. After that, where you'll be placed is solely decided by your MMR after the 10 placement matches.

And there is a phenomenon caused by the current League system being too forgiving to players. I know it can be hard to accept, but this system is designed to lie to people about their MMR to fight "ladder anxiety". Let's say you just got 900 MMR after placements and it got you placed in Bronze 4. You can spend months winning/losing climbing/falling and you can get to Silver 5 and you will still have that 900 MMR. Because of how forgiving League system is to your LP compared to MMR. LP is arbitrary points, without clamping you can trade 1 win for 2 losses at 0 LP endlessly and then climb a division while being 50 MMR down. MMR itself is strict, unforgiving and clear. But Riot thinks that it adds too much pressure. So only when the placement matches come, players can finally see where they would trully belong if they were distributed into Leagues ONLY according to their MMR. But soon they'll start playing regular games and the League system will allow them to climb without raising MMR. Lots and lots of people who float in the same ranked tier back and forth most of the times have their MMR much lower than their League is supposed to have.

Tansen1 votes

OK so I log off at 11:59 pm on 1/21/2015 at 1200+ MMR(based off of LOLKing and op.gg statistics) and seated in Silver 5 with a 50%+ win rate . I log back in on 1/22/2015 and have no ranking because of the soft reset which according to you basically doubles my MMR then halves it(because I was over 1200 MMR but less than 1300).

I then proceed to win 6 out of 10 placement matches(4 of the wins coming in my first 6 games). At this point I am DEMOTED a tier and 4 divisions down with no LP after I won 60% of my placement matches. And it was a demotion not a reset because the MMR range I was in was not affected by any of the math that would affect those of higher or lower MMR. So I was dropped out of my bracket and down 4 divisions for losing 4 games.

Try to explain it away with any of your imaginary numbers and theories on how placements work, but the fact will remain that I now get to play a shitload of games that will be as much fun as having my teeth pulled just to make it back to where I was 7 days ago. I imagine it will take 500 plus games to get back out of bronze due to the sheer number of trolls/leavers/dcs and afks I will have to fight thru.

DEN15 5122 votes

Not bitching, but I went 3-7 in placements, and that's probably because I didn't do great. I only had 2 or 3 games where I did poorly, and even one of those was because I was the only champion on my team that wasn't 0-3 after 10 minutes. As a bruiser, you're not going to carry that game. The other games I did reasonably well, but wasn't really good enough to carry.

Ended up in Silver III from Gold III. As soon as I got placed, I could not seem to lose a game. I'm currently on a 4 game win streak, which includes a Fizz game with a score that I could never hope to achieve in a game at my actual skill level.

I'm having lots of fun stomping noobs because Riot decided that I was a whole tier below where I should be, and I think I'll be close to where I was in 50 games max. Those who are complaining about their lower rank likely only achieved it through like 1000+ games played.

TL;DR: Stop bitching about getting placed lower, just stomp some noobs and climb back up.

It's a shame the opposite team had members that lost games due to you being placed in the wrong place

An unfortunate consequence, but what can you do?

Bresn1 votes

The problem is that promos are Riot expecting you to literally carry your team of true feeders or other frustrated, discouraged players that are misplaced.

XinZhao2WinNhao1 votes

I won my first 4 games in placements, and it didnt really help, im still bronze

mirAcIe2 votes

Starting MMR after the reset was too low. If it was lower than the starting point (before it was 1250 iirc) then "soft reset" would put you lower than 1250, so your chances of getting a higher placement even lower than a fresh account with no ranked history. Pretty sure whoever is lower than silver 3 is below 1250. Bronze is probably below 1k. You can't just fix that in 10 games.

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

So basically, having lost the first 3 games in a row means my MMR is completely trashed.

mirAcIe1 votes

But you shouldn't lose first 3 games in a row if you think that you deserve to be much higher because people you will face in the first 3 games will be from way lower divisions.

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

Had two close games that could've gone either way, and one game where we wrecked bot (I was support Thresh) but both top and mid got destroyed by jungle Udyr.

Xela Syab1 votes

I lost alot of my placements due to teemo and graves bans and havign to deal with rek sai every damn game, I'm more salty about that than winding up in bronze 4 again.

AnUpsetCrayon1 votes

i win 7 of my placements and get put into bronze...i don't see how that is when my friend win 4 and gets s5...

Smitty Manjensen1 votes

Hmm, in s3 I was gold 5, so in s4 I actually waited till there was only 3 weeks before season end to do my placement matches, I won 7 out of 10 and got placed in gold 3 so you can get placed and I think the system gets bugged every time a new season starts plus all those trolls and newbies.

Aboylova921 votes

In my case I went 8-2 and ended precisely where I ended last season S2. It's not that big of a deal as last season was my first whole season, and had only really played 3 months before that, but I did expect maybe to get a tad higher as I thought 8-2 was pretty decent, and won I think my first 5 straight.

Kise1 votes

Well I actually went back to my old league so..

Bresn1 votes

I think some of us are aware.

However we been pouring our souls and time into powerhousing our rankings in the pre-season while Riot hollors "Pre-season rank will influence your placement!' but then everybody in Silver and Bronze pretty much drops into Bronze 5 and my worthy Gold3 friend dropepd into Silver3. You seeing this bs?

Phoneixflare1 votes

oops, you lost 7 in a row because of leavers, trolls, feeders, and people being afk on your team and being really toxic then you won the next 3 games by some miracle! yay for you!

Have fun being in bronze despite being gold last season! :^)

-Sincerely, Riot

mirAcIe1 votes

Does it matter? Season just started, you have a lot of time ahead of you to climb to your rightful place. Do you realize that if everyone played their placements at the same time (which happens when you play right when season beings) - HALF of the people would lose them? Because, you know, 50% of players always lose games.

Phoneixflare1 votes

Yes, it does matter. Do you know how many players are just going to straight up stop playing because of the bullshit they WILL have to deal with in bronze? It's a tedious process climbing out of lower level elo man. Why force players to do that with a system that you put in place that allows them to drop that much lower than their previous ranking in the first place? Do you really, honestly, 100% believe that you should be RANKED based upon your LUCK of the OTHER PLAYERS you are matched with instead of being RANKED by your INDIVIDUAL SKILL?

Akesgeroth1 votes

Which is why so many plat and gold players got put in bronze and silver thanks to trolls and can't climb back out, still thanks to trolls, right?

mirAcIe1 votes

What? True plat players would climb out of bronze and silver in a week at most.

Akesgeroth1 votes

Sure. As long as they get lucky and don't get trolls on their team more often than not, which is my entire point.

mirAcIe1 votes

We all play the same ladder, everyone will get "that" player at some point and probably lose that game. In a bigger prospective it doesn't matter if you lost that one time because of some troll.

Akesgeroth1 votes

It does matter. The lower you are on the ladder, the higher the odds that you'll get trolls on either team and so the less control you have over your rating. If you get unlucky and get trolls more often than not, it's over.

mirAcIe1 votes

Those are not "trolls", those are people who easily give up if the game goes bad early. And you have total control of winning the game if you just step up with your skill level. It's not that hard given how much you can do to improve your skill level compared to your Bronze opponents who stick to the "elo hell" mentality.

AProSt81 votes

Feels like Vegas a little right now...hide the MMR....if people are this confused about how they rank and derank...then lets just play the game for fun because it IS very fun and well made. Whatever reason there is to hide the way we become better and feel better that Riot may have obviously will never be told to us so just go wreck some noobs and enjoy the fact that ADCs that were challenger last year can get worse KDAs than you and lose about the same and fall into plat. It makes sense, after all. I have watched people play and been interested if perhaps there are some contracts or monies involved with keeping certain people/teams and HELL I AM SO CONFUSED EVEN TRYING TO SAY THIS. It doesn't matter because at the end of the day we will go watch LCS and they get 10c a viewer from sponsors and who would wanna watch some new teams anyway? They got brand loyalty....so hide the mmr and how it is truly given.

Noblebrick1 votes

Mehh to all of this....I was S4 last season...went 3-7 (talk about bum luck). I figured I would be lower, of course...and my mmr might be slightly less than silver at that point, no big deal...but...BRONZE 5! I just laughed. I get the whole mmr thing..but there was no way it was that low...few days later I skipped B3 and working back..but what a kick to the...

I wish people understood This. The other day I had someone on my team instalock kassadin against fiora, which pretty much cost us the game. When I questioned why he would do that he told me that he picked him "for fun" because riot put him in silver where he "didn't belong," as if he thought he was so good, he could carry with whoever just because.

That's just not how it works and I want people to know that you throwing a fit about your rank won't help you recover
