What LoL Can Learn from the New Dota Update (Technical Wise)

Meep Man··82 votes·7,283 views

Note: This is in no way me saying Dota 2 is better than LoL, but I am saying Dota 2 has SOME stuff that LoL could learn from.

1. The Time to Start a Game CAN Be a Lot Shorter In Dota 7.00, the game itself loads WHILE you perform champion select. You can get into a match in about 3-5 minutes time minimum and 6-7 minutes maximum. Meanwhile in LoL, it takes MUCH longer to get into a game since the game itself DOES NOT load behind the scenes. In LoL, you use about 5-6 minutes in champion select before waiting about 1-3 minutes for loading. This is bare minimum unless everyone in the match has amazing computers and all select characters very quickly. This makes the minimum time to get into a game in LoL about 6-9 minutes compared to the new Dota's 3-5 minutes. Basically, what I am saying is that LoL could be a LOT more refined and swift with getting players into games than it currently is.

2. The Actual Champion Select Could Have More Elements In It In the new Dota 7.00, you purchase your starting items and predict enemy lanes before you start the game (as well as some Dota specific stuff but whatever with that). Furthermore, heroes in Dota 2 have Power Levels assigned to what they can do, with the list being: Carry, Support, Nuker, Disabler, Initiator, Pusher, Jungler, Escape, and Durable. Obviously the sorting in LoL isn't like this, but LoL could have some of this. It would be cool to see a bar/graph of the strengths of your team.

3. We Could Have Better Ways to Gain IP/Have Fun in the Client/Game This isn't specific to the Dota 7.00 update, but Dota has these things called Battle Passes that allow players to be able to get some random loot for completing quests and play little mini-games for rewards, usually daily or if the community as a whole completes a Community Wide Quest (for example, place 10,000,000,000 wards). Battle Passes also usually allow for the community to vote for certain heroes/champions to be given a new skin or get a VU. Basically, Battle Passes are everything a LoL player would want if it was put into LoL. The Battle Pass would be a.) a way to more quickly gain IP for runes, rune pages, and champions, b.) something to do while waiting for a game that is within the client, and c.) a way for the community to interact with Riot's design process by choosing which champion gets a VU/VGU (or whatever) next.

i have one problem with your post ** it's dota 3 not dota 2**

This dota has nothing to do with the old one, and every streamers/viewers are calling it Dota 3, the entire game literally changed, you take dota2 heroes and put them in a new game

Jokes aside, this is a good post

I agree, especially as a Techies player, who is now a shit ton less frustrating to play against in my opinion since infinite duration Land Mine kills can no longer come out of the blue and now have a delay when stepped on. My "Worse Than Teemo" satanic main aside, yeah, the game is a ton different and, in my opinion, OVERALL in a better direction.

it's literally dota 3, valve used 6. something for 10 years, and suddenly it goes from 6.88 to 7.00 it's dota 3 but they don't want to use the number 3 because they aren't allowed to do so

They will never reward individual performance. Because then the whole game becomes a camping stat pad. Muh cs, muh wards, muh kills wah. Team game people please quit with the quest requests. Unless the quests can ONLY be achieved by WINNING. lul So we have that it's called MMR.

Meep Man5 votes

It can be a Team Quest then. "When this player is in a game, if the team in all has X amount of X, the quest is completed." The specifics aren't what is important, it's the idea.

50000000000000009 votes

Global quest sounds really interesting, though. Something like "Singed needs more test subjects. Together, kill 1 Million units (minions, monsters, and kills)." Or "Caitlyn and Vi are looking for a criminal. Together, place 100,000 Control wards."

Meep Man2 votes

In Dota 2, it was something like "Chop down 1 trillion trees I think" and then everyone was rewarded. So yeah, something like those would be good.

Dota 2 requires you to win the game to benefit from the quest.

Could still have a negative effect on the game. "Don't finish, I need 50 more CS and 3 kills". Just because it works in one game doesn't mean it'll work in another. They'd have to be real careful with what they implement.

The problem with League has been that it was built on ancient technology by a gang of modders a decade ago. That's why there's so much spaghetti in the code. Now that we have the new client on the way they can finally start adding new features and fix other things. One thing I loved about Dawngate (rip) was that the game loaded in like 5 seconds. Loading times like that would be amazing in League.

Meep Man5 votes

Yeah. Plus, Dota was a mod made by modders as well and now is what it is today, proving that a game can be transformed into anything with time. I await the day I want to play a game of LoL and can get into it in 5.5 minutes max.

DotA 2 was released in 2012 under Valve's Source engine which has been improved upon for years by infinitely more experienced developers than what LoL started out with. There were actual seasoned game developers working with Icefrog to develop the game from the moment it was in development.

Also LOL has been around longer and its more successful as well as it generates more money than dota 2. Having inferior client and engine at this point is pretty lame.

Dota was first it existed as a mod and league was the first to branch off into a stand alone client. Dota 2 was later created as a stand alone client. League was more successful due to better marketing. Leagues cinematics are much better than dotas imo.

I cry every time someone brings up that glorious game. Probably the least toxic community and the most constantly updated lore of any MOBA I have played. Plus, the game itself was decent fun.

Aren't Battle Passes like $20 every 3-4 months when a new one comes out?

ModCaptainMårvelous4 votes

1.) Pretty sure they can't do this due to the current make-up of the engine. I'm all for it but I don't see it as possible without scrapping and changing everything.

2.) They actually do have settings in the alpha client based on champion damage. I would like to see a chart outlying comp you've made.

3.) I do not like the battle pass. I'm sorry but quests in this type of game do not work unless it's the most basic HotS-style quest (Win 3 times with a Demacia hero, for example). It makes games either stalled out or changes the flow to get a quest done. Besides, as is, I'd rather them just change the rune system and have IP solely devoted to champs. THAT would erase like 60-70% of the IP costs currently in the game. Also, I don't think it's smart to give the community leverage in picking VUs. Need I remind you the Faceless Void update voted upon?

Sraeg20131 votes

Funny shit, it used to be a thing before they TL;DR'd it to "mage, fighter, marksman, etc".

Meep Man1 votes

Yeah, I remember when Jungler and Pusher used to labels at least.

Atanchan2 votes

To be fair, there's very few champions you can't jungle with if you're dedicated enough to learn how to do so. In DOTA, though, if you try to go level 1 jungle Anti-Mage, Iron Talon is not going to be nearly enough to get you anywhere and you'll just end up food for the enemy Bounty Hunter.

Ipressbutton1 votes

You forgot - Custom Maps/ Arcade Mode Riot has a huge, creative fan base. Why companies stopped allowing user created content is beyond me, especially when the MOBA genre would not exist if Blizzard never included the world editor with their early pc games

Atanchan1 votes

Probably because those tools flat-out don't exist in a very user-friendly format.

Blizzard used the world editor to make their own maps. Valve's had Hammer for ages, and it's not hard to imagine that they made the tile editor for internal development waaaay before custom game modes were even a thing From what I've heard from the League devs, though, it sounds like they don't have any sort of map editor, instead just creating the map's model in a general-use model editor and injecting code-important stuff through other means.

And you have to consider the fact that DOTA 2 was probably at least somewhat made with the intention of allowing custom game modes from the start, so the code was laid out in a way that scripting hooks and such could easily be made and exposed. I would imagine that there's some of this in League's code, yes, but only as far as simplifying how Riot themselves can add new content. And it may not actually be set up in such a way that, say, allows Ashe to have a different Q than her main game Q in any sort of elegant way.

Plus, take this from someone who actually mods DOTA 2. It's really, really not a good feeling when you have to work around new features that weren't properly integrated into the modding API, and that's happened quite a lot with Valve. So unless Riot did better than them, chances are that League modding wouldn't be that pleasant of an experience even with a proper API and modding structure.

Flyinguillotine1 votes

Hi, Dota player here, you make good points but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE DON'T PUT BATTLE PASSES IN LEAGUE. The first one was fun. Then second one was less fun. By the thirty eighth people realized that they had just devoted all of their time to making these dumb passes with ok cosmetics instead of adding new content.

That being said the new dota looks hella fun and I'll probably go check that out for a while now that flex doesn't have the IP bonus any more.

It would not be easy for riot to implement a system like dota2. They can't just straight up rip the system from dota2. League has hextech loot and dota2 has battlepasses.

In terms of #3, I think the Tribunal would be a GREAT little thing for people to do, especially if it was integrated into the client itself. That would be great.

hhaavviikk1 votes
  1. that highly depends on the pc of the player, sometimes the match begins in 30 seconds because not everyone is playing on a toaster

  2. would this actually be useful? since the meta decides what champions will be played in ranked regardless if it's 4 physical dealing champions

  3. I don't think the choosing part could work considering LoL has like 10-15 times more players then DotA 2

Also wish the honor system was more visible/in your face like the commend system in Overwatch.

At least don't hide the buttons and let players know they are honor'd the moment they are, not after you leave post-game stat screen.

Talisid1 votes

I've already seen some posts saying the new client lags their toaster computer so I'm not sure that having the game load behind champ select would be a great idea. It could make the client unstable for some people.
