Thornmail Idea: Quill Coat

Thornmail Cost: 2400 Recipe: Quill Coat + Chain Vest + 500g

  • 100 Armor UNIQUE PASSIVE: Barbs - 25% of the physical damage taken (+15% bonus armor) from basic attacks and on-hit effects back to its source as magic damage. (Calculated before damage mitigation.)

Quill Coat Cost: 1100 Recipe: Cloth Armor + Cloth Armor + Cloth Armor + 200g 50 Armor

UNIQUE PASSIVE: Barbs - 10% of the physical damage taken (+7.5% bonus armor) from basic attacks and on-hit effects back to its source as magic damage. (Calculated before damage mitigation.)

Anyone remember Quill Coat? Basically I repurposed it into a mini-Thornmail. Incorporating an advanced item into Thornmail makes it much more recipe-friendly, and lets it compete with Warden’s Mail items. It also used to cost 1250 to combine items into Thornmail, yet now you don’t have to stare at the shop worrying if you should save to finish it or start another item, because it only costs 300g to combine an already very incremental recipe.

Major thing I'm really concerned about with this idea is cost. Does this make Thornmail too expensive? Is Quill Coat too powerful for its price?

TL;DR Quill Coat is Thornmail's advanced item in its recipe. Make Thornmail great again!

But the remade Thornmail is still terrible.

That's because:

  1. The passive sucks ass. Buffing its passive fixes that.
  2. It takes forever to build
  3. There's no good time to build it. The addition of an advanced item in the recipe fixes both of those problems.

make the smaller version 15% against melee attacks and 25% against ranged attacks without the armor scaling portion.

the idea is to have some form of answer to ranged top laners.

plus, if its supposed to be an early game item, the armor scaling on the small version doesnt make sense.

A focus on countering ranged is much more suited to another item. Like Doran's Shield or something new entirely.

The scaling on Quill Coat is there so you can put off finishing it and buy a different armor item entirely if you still need one. It would give an average of 5+ flat damage upon purchase and every 13.33 armor would be another 1 damage. That's around 10 to 20 DPS from the passive at early levels (against champions), which is more than Bami's Cinder does at early levels for situationally better protection. I wouldn't mind increasing it to 12.5% damage return or increasing the scaling to 10/20%, but you have to remember that it could be picked up by junglers and supports as well, and they benefit the most from a passive damage output.
