So "certain death" abilities are a thing now...

SaltyToplaneGoat··12 votes·1,616 views

... and I'm not sure what to think about it yet tbh. Given that it now is a thing we will see this in future designs as well... an assassin with such an execution move would make sense (isn't the Eve rework half-done already?), same as a special thing for low-damage control mages that might lack burst but can still be lethal due to how their combo works.

But just how is that to balance? I'm still not sure if this is a good or bad development.

Assassins should never have an execution in this game simply because of how mobile they are with a pretty fast burst already. It makes their snowbally kit even faster, which is not that great.

Dunno, isnt "bam ya dead" the assassin theme? If you are low HP and out of position then they insta-kill you, that's, like, their entire thing.

pretty sure most assassins dont care if you are full hp or low hp, if you squishy they goanna kill you regardless.

Believe me, I've played Smite, and I can guarantee you don't want assassins with % health thresholds executes.

While ao kuang and thanatos can get annoying i dont find them that bad unless im in a 1v1 or away from my team. However it reallys depnds on how it will be balanced in this game.

SpecterVonBaren1 votes

I disagree, if anything assassins should have less fast burst but more damage that scales with missing health. They should be the champs that are able to follow up on a carry getting damaged in a fight and trying to hide behind their team.

His ult. I know it's not technically an execute, but in the contexts he uses it in IMO it behaves exactly like one.

Automated Riven1 votes

if by execute you mean the last damage before you die? in which case every damage in the game counts as an execute. I get killed by zed far more often by his q or autoattack. Its only really late game when he can onshot people that his ult actually kills anyone.

Honestly it's not as bad as it seems. Looking at someone like Garen especially the effect is very similar. I'm gonna assume the health threshhold isn't very high considering that it's insta-death, and not just a normal execute like Darius, Garen, or Rek'Sai.

I think it might even be more balanced than those executes especially because it's a skillshot with a relatively thin hit-box.

We'll just have to wait and see where Riot decides to put the cutoff for the insta-death, because from the video it didn't seem very high on the Vi (looked to be around 10% which is very fair).

honestly 10% seems too low to me. 20-30% seems more fair.

Indeed. It wont be useful unless it scales higher - 15/20/25%+1% per 50 bonus AD would be a LOT more fair.

Honestly, it seems to be weaker than Executions since most champs can use their ults even if it's not going to execute

I believe they said it is 25%

This is what I saw as well.

It depends on how the ability works, imo:

  • If the health threshold is flat, with or without an AD scaling, it's pretty much just a true damage nuke, and the fact that it's a skillshot ult with a conditional activation would justify it pretty well, I'd say.
  • If the health threshold is percentile (i.e. executes enemies below X% health) then it could potentially be good as a fallback effect -- it would scale with the enemy's health, so if they're ahead he gets more of an advantage out of the ability, and if he's ahead it's comparatively less useful -- but it also runs the risk of making tanky champions feel squishier than they should. Feeling like you have X% less health as a tank whenever Urgot is around could be scary, but also perhaps a little disheartening, especially since tanks and juggernauts aren't the best at ducking for cover, which seems like the main counterplay to that ult.

So basically we'll have to see, but really, Urgot's certain death isn't really all that different from any other execute, e.g. Darius, Garen or Veigar's ult, particularly since all of those effects are instant and targeted, whereas Fear Beyond Death is a telegraphed skillshot. How it affects certain champions over others is another matter, but is also a numbers problem, rather than one of core gameplay.

DU Baymax1 votes

one thing I take issue with - veigar's ult is definitely not "instant", and darius's has a slight delay too. Garen's would probably qualify as instant.

Teridax682 votes

That is true, all of the "instant" abilities I mentioned have, at the very least, a cast time, plus Darius requires sight of his target for the whole animation (his ult is technically a dash) and Veigar's ult is a projectile, which allows them to be countered in some circumstances using untargetability, immortality, etc. I phrased my comparison poorly in that respect, and the point I tried to make was that Urgot's execute is, by comparison, much more telegraphed, as it's a two-part ult where the first part is a skillshot, and therefore already more interactive than any of the other mentioned ults.

AbiwonKenabi1 votes

Isn't the low target also pulled in fairly slowly? As I recall, I read a Rioter saying that anything that can break a suppression can break you out of the tether (like Tahm Kench eating you or QSS or maybe a Kayle ult or something). So there's a window of counterplay even there.

Teridax682 votes

I'm less sure about that part, because even though it's been called a suppression by Riot, from the details it's apparently impossible to break free from the tether once it's on (CC immunity and cleanses like Olaf's ult and Gangplank's oranges won't work), and the only way to stop it is to kill Urgot. Because of this, "suppression" might be a misnomer, as it technically acts more like a stasis effect (e.g. Zhonya's, Bard ult, etc.) during the tether. Time and testing will tell how it'll work, but I think that component to Urgot's ult might not be so counterable, even if its mode of application and reactivation is to a large degree.

AbiwonKenabi2 votes

I found the comment I was basing my thoughts on: https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/6lvoua/champion_reveal_urgot_the_dreadnought/djwztov/

BelugaWhale says "things that remove suppression will stop it." But I agree that we will probably have to see it in action more.

Teridax682 votes

Thank you for bringing this up! I had not seen that comment, and the Riot response confirms that the reactivation is canceled by both missile block and full CC cleanses, which would make it a proper suppression, as you said. I should relay this back to the wiki chat, as we might otherwise be operating on incorrect information.

They should make fizz ult certain death (only if its the big shark), honestly it makes so much sense and it would help him actually be able to kill someone in this locket/support items/utility infested meta, maybe zed should get this too if he does "X" damage with his ult.

DJMason881 votes

So instead of nerfing the problem you're going to make a new problem to counter-act the problem?

DU Baymax1 votes

no wtf. You would make it so that if fizz lands a max range ult it would one shot anybody who is inside of it? regardless of how high their health is?

it's the same thing as a garen R, just you actually have a chance to run away by killing urgot.

FantasySniper1 votes

It'll probably stay unique to Urgod.

It's very difficult to balance unless it feels like you made a mistake by staying in the fight. Legion Commander from DOTA2 is sort of similar in that her ultimate forces the end of the fight (one way or another), but she otherwise has no CC.

JackMcSnipeyz1 votes

oh you mean like Cho'gath's R, or darius. R, or Garen's R, or any other execute ability. it just looks flashy and very thematic. Also, unlike those mentioned above his execute is a skillshot and CAN be avoided if urgot dies.

i bet if it was just "urgot shoots you in the head and if you're 20% health you get executed" people wouldnt be worried.

Bârd1 votes

None of those spells are guaranteed death. A heal or shield can stop all of them.

Darius ult can also be stopped by killing Darius in the air.

The special thing about Urgot ult ignores shields, and healing doesn't matter if he has already started reeling you in.

Only a preemptive invulnerability or a revival spell can save you from Urgot.

JackMcSnipeyz1 votes

Cho'gath ult is instant, garen and darius almost instant, yea sure you can do a clutch heal but it's requires timing

his execution is just a cinematic thing, you can heal the target while the skillshot launches, it's not point and click instant, you can block it, you can dodge it, you can shield it before it hits your target. See what im trying to say? you just need that clutch heal BEFORE he gets pulled in, after that you're too late, but you have enough reaction time to do it just like all other executions
