Too many low elo players dont know how to support properly

There should be a mandatory tutorial on positioning and lane presence/pressure for all roles especially support. Too many people sit behindthe adc all lane phase and watch them play.. It's bs

A tutorial for people who don't want to learn would still do nothing.

Perfect response!

Require it to get into ranked.. Bot lanes and their mediocre tutorial isn't realistic or preparing people for the game.

LostFr0st3 votes

There are two tutorials actually; the one on the rift isn't that bad either.

People who hit 30 are still just learning the game. People don't play league to get lectured. They'll just go through the motions and stumble through it. Some things can't be forced. When they want to learn there are plenty of places to get up-to date info.

tldr: as soon as the meta shifts any tutorial they'd make would be out of date.

Aurelion Soul NA1 votes

Then they should play normals.. And positioning is relatively always the same.

LostFr0st2 votes

That's a very narrow pov. Perhaps you should main support and show them how it's done? All things considered though people have to take into account that autofill exists and they won't always get a good support to win the lane with them. It happens. Nagging the person won't make them play any better.

Also: positioning is important in ALL roles, I'm not sure how that would be just a "support tutorial" tbh and I'm not sure positioning can be taught via tutorial anyways since it depends on not only your champ, but theirs too and the cds that are up. That would be a very very long and boring tutorial.

p.s. No, "just play normals" isn't the answer, and neither is "do this tutorial and you'll magically become aphromoo/Wolf/etc." Learning is best done through actual experience. Normals != Ranked, the play patterns and feel are different.

Aurelion Soul NA1 votes

I do play support frequently, and if its a very long and boring tutorial.. then they can jus play normal and avoid it.

If ur gonna play competitive playlists.. you should know the game.. Period. Otherwise go play normal and noone will nag you for anything.

U have an Obligation to your teammates to know and understand the role/champion/meta of the game. Period.

If that was the case why was the post titled "Too many low elo players dont know how to support properly" instead of "Too many low elo players dont know how to play their roles properly."

I climbed out of bronze myself 2 years ago in very few games, it's not the support or anyone else holding people back. It's usually their own farm and map awareness.

There is no Meta in low elo. There are only champs people know how to play and champs that they don't (aka they "counterpick" without knowing why it's a counterpick but their team says to pick it and they blindly follow the suggestion as if League is rock-paper-scissors).

Until people figure that out they will stay in low elo; that's the cold hard truth.

The correct solution would be to make the role more appealing to people who don't like it. It's taken them 7 years to give a support on demand mobility with the new dude, so that's a step in the right direction. But then there's the mandatory Redemption/Locket rush and the mage support thing, which is three steps back again.

Frightning1 votes

The solution (which is also the same for tanks), is to make the champions for the role able to make solo plays. It's why many people don't like playing tanks and supports; they feel 100% dependent on their supposedly shit allies.

Aptest1 votes

I think there are a number of factors limiting support play making. the no 1 factor is adcs being so dependent. you leave them, they get dived and die. and if you don't leave them, well ADCs don't really want to make plays themselves. what they want is safety and consistency not risks and rewards (unless they are bronze 5 and can't farm shit).

a supporting reason is the people on whom you can make plays are generally more mobile than the support champion. It's naturally hard to play make on people with 2 jumps when you have 0 and additionally lower base MS and their core items give mobility and yours dont.

If you want supports to make more plays you have to do two things - make ADCs sufficiently good in the mid game that they can defend themselves and farm sufficiently under tower alone, and make sure the jungle and mid lane are less hospitable to hyper mobile "actually i outplay you and get away no problem and you gave me a kill (fizz, leblanc, talon, lee sin)" champions and more hospitable to "oh shit i am getting ganked and my flash is on CD fuck my life (syndra, oriana, viktor)"

Actually, it's a myth nowadays that ADCs are weak early and 100% dependent on having a support to 'babysit' them. Most ADCs can do well in solo lanes as long as they aren't against high burst opponents, and one's with an escape or self-peel in particular can be very good versus many meta top laners if the ADC player understands how to play the lane and the matchup. The duo lane in general is very dependent on coordination and teamwork (this has nothing to do with archetypes and everything to do with numbers, of champions in the lane, mattering). I think most people like playing the laning phase as support, that's not what I usually hear complained about. It's the lack of impact they feel they have afterwords (even if they actual have significant impact). To illustrate: consider Janna very strong and impactful support pick that wins like 54% of her games over all elos, yet most people don't like playing her and feel 'weak' outside of lane, even though, truthfully she is a strong champion. Why is this? She doesn't do anything of value unless she is around allied champions. It's that dependency together with the lack of coordination you see in lower level play that makes her feel helpless and unfun to play. Her design is, balance-wise, fine, and in fact, maybe too good. But it doesn't feel good to play. Thresh is, imo, one of the few supports that feel rewarding to play because he's such an incredible play creator. You see an enemy out of position, ping so you allies see it too, move in, get the hook, lantern them in. BAM, you netted a kill for your allies. It feels satisfying to be able to make things happen like that. Even then, if my allies aren't responsive, then even as Thresh, I will still get that 'I'm useless feeling' because in all honesty, if they won't back me up, I AM useless.

Maybe if people were strongly encouraged to 'help your tank/support players when they want you to help them' somehow, this wouldn't be such a problem. Having gotten to play tanks and supports in group play with good, responsive teammates, it's actually a ton of fun. But that's predicted on allies that are on the same page as you, and that's hard to find in solo que (and that is why one of the best bits of advice I can give to people that play damage dealers is to trust your tanks/supports and help them out, even if you're skeptical if they are making a good call; the value of establishing that kind of team cohesion is worth attempting a few risky plays that might not end up paying off).

Yes, even though I suspect rakan will face perma ban for a while. If riot makes playing support as exciting/ engaging as rakan people will want to learn about how to play the role effectively in low elo.

Aurelion Soul NA2 votes

I think it is exciting and has the most button mashing and awareness needed. You not knowing this tells me you might be one of those supports that doesn't quite know the role well.

Aptest1 votes

if you want that, you need to have a good answer here:

as a support, who do i get to shit on, and under what circumstances do i get to shit on them?

But then there's the mandatory Redemption/Locket rush and the mage support thing, which is three steps back again.

Mage supports were one of the worst things to happen to the support role imo. It completely shifted the support role away from what it's eve supposed to be like...

But then there's the mandatory Redemption/Locket rush

Don't forget sightstone.

Granted, it's basically a required item for reasons pointed out to me, but my point stands. Half of your build currently is static.

Paquay1 votes

Exactly. You could insert any role here and it would be accurate, but since OP mains ADC, it looks like he chooses to call out supports.

The war between the two will never end.

La Belle Sauvage4 votes

Coming from a low elo support I've had the opposite experience where ADCs never seem to follow up.

Aurelion Soul NA1 votes

Are you engaging at the correct times? I typically dont have that problem and when I do I just secure the kills myself :/

Kilanost4 votes

I started enjoying autofilling to support the day I realized that the entire purpose of support is to troll the enemy bot lane as hard as possible during lane phase. Way more fun when you think of it as the troll role.

Aurelion Soul NA1 votes

I also enjoy playing support.. It's actually easiest to carry low elo from the role too, but I am not a single role kinda guy.. I switch it up alot.

Starcraft243ver2 votes

Maybe that's the whole reason they are low elo wtf.

You could also say low elo people dont know how to : Adc Top Jungle Mid properly and it would be true until diam 1+

Aurelion Soul NA1 votes

Yeah but support is low key the most valuable asset on the team. It's not a hard role but it is one of the most important.

I think too many low elo players don't know how to do ALOT of things properly...

and the thing is, they think its riot's fault.

As someone that plays nearly half of my games a support, I'll counter by saying that far too many ADCs don't know how to position or follow up on a pick/snare/harass. This isn't strictly a low Elo issue, this is all the way up through Plat at least.

Aurelion Soul NA1 votes

I have far less problems with adcs than I do with supports.

LostFr0st1 votes

The OP is an AD main; might not get far on this one.^^"

The push-pull between the two roles has always been there since they depend so heavily on one another. I don't think it'll change anytime soon either (depending on how the support role shakeup goes).

Jerry SeinfeId1 votes

As someone who's two highest mastery champs are an adc and a support. both are fucking retarded.

support just cries more, and acts like some entitled %%%%. while the adc's are often just assholes.

i do feel bad for them when they're actually trying but it's just not working out.

Aurelion Soul NA2 votes

I would like to argue that the game itself is fun, but the people who ruin it are jerks.

ive noticed this recently too

ironically they all seem to whine about how they don't like support even though most of them have never actually tried it even though they get stuck in support every game

Too many ADCs think they are rambo and can kill any bot lane combo, any where, any time. I can't tell you how sick I get of ADCs trying to poke 24/7 just to get out-traded because they have no sense of timing.

Aptest1 votes

to be fair this is true of support players also.

Here's an info dump: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Some information may be outdated. Take it with a grain of salt. Respond to this post for answers to any questions you might have. I peaked at D3 as a jungle/support main.

Unload On Me1 votes

You have to look at it from both sides. Low elo players who can support, choose not to because no one else knows their roles properly either. No actual low elo support is going to 1v9.

Partholonian2 votes

Actual low elo players aren't going to 1v9 in any role, that shit is only for diamond+ smurfs. The sooner they accept the necessity of working with their team to win games, the sooner they'll become medium elo players.

The hard part of being support IMO is when you know the place your team needs to go, but you can't get them to go there. If you were a high CS role you might be able to go yourself and accomplish something, as a jungler you might at least pull off a smitesteal, but as a support you will just feed.

Tutorials by LCS players aren't going to address this because they either have a good shot caller already, or in Aphromoo's case, ARE their team's shot caller.

MetalGearTeemu1 votes

Deal, if you also make one for ADC's telling them to actually back up their supports harass.

When I'm desperately fighting 2 champions to create space for you in lane and you're just kind of drooling and staring at creeps with a god damned Caitlyn, it makes me hope you suffer some kind of bodily harm. I wouldn't wish death on you for it, but I kinda hope a car backs over your foot or something.

AdeBug1 votes

'idk cait, i have teh sorry', after i dumped my whole pre 6 kit + exhaust on a supposedly free enemy adc, while she was afk farming behind me the entire time. this went on for the entire fkn game, no cait in our team fights. thank God it was just a normal.

LawUrDepravdHart1 votes

Learning positioning on support is like learning positioning on all other lanes it comes with time and experience.

Every support should watch afromoo's tutorial on how easy support is- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6bWcmK-w_M

Moreover, there is no guide for jglin either :(
