What do you guys build on Gnar?

Gnart Even Close··2 votes·1,507 views

I was just wondering what you guys do for runes, masteries, and items on a typical game with Gnar. Personally, I run 15/15 masteries, AD marks (with one for crit), AS quints, scaling armor seals, and flat mr glyphs. For items, I rush Phage into Randuin's, get Merc Treads, and works towards a final build of Black Cleaver, Merc Treads w/ Homeguard, Randuin's Omen, Banshee's Veil, Dead Man's Plate, and Frozen Mallet.

When youre ahead, rush a item 3071, a early item 3134 can do a lot too, but I dont think anyone does that anymore :[ Otherwise just rush a tank item that counters your lane opponent. Then just get whatever tank items you need I guess, dont build the same every game. Like, its better to get item 3047 over item 3111 against a full AD team and youre probably gonna skip item 3102 / item 3065 too, right? :p

luckmallory2 votes

As someone who plays a ton of gnar and mains gnar on my smurf ill throw in here

Against AD- item 3134 item 3068 item 3111 item 3071 item 3143 item 3065 then sell brutilizer for either item 3075 or item 3102 depending on the other team

Against AP- item 3211 item 3134 item 3065 item 3111 item 3068 item 3071 item 3102 then sell brutilizer for a randuins in most cases

Build in the order i listed and obviously things can be slightly tweaked like boot choice or building sunfire before brutilizer if you are having a hard time vs AD

I have about 700 games on gnar across all my accounts. Good luck mate

Gnart Even Close1 votes

I've never tried buying Brutalizer early and then selling it later. Thanks for the tip! Also, for Sunfire Cape, is the range what is shown when you hover over the item or what the visuals suggest?

luckmallory2 votes

The visuals are more accurate

thanks. ill probably file a bug report

As a mastery lvl 5 and who knows how many games I have on Gnar, I run 21/9/0 masteries on Gnar, with standard ad marks and quints, armor seals and mr glyphs.

For Builds, it really depends on the matchup for me. I tend to rush ![item 3044](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3044.png) , but sometimes I go for ![item 3155](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3155.png) if my lane opponent is an ap bully like![Rumble](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/champion/Rumble.png) or ![Kennen](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/champion/Kennen.png) . After I finish Phage, I get ![item 3047](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3047.png) or ![item 3111](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3111.png) depending on the enemy team comp. After that, I rush out ![item 3071](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3071.png), followed by![item 3143](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3143.png).

If I am very ahead and my team needs more damage, I will go ![item 3153](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3153.png) next. If im not super ahead or my team needs tank. I will go ![item 3065](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3065.png).

After that if I got ![item 3155](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3155.png), I will go![item 3156](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3156.png) . Some other optional items I tend to choose from, depending on matchups and how the game is going, after this are:![item 3075](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3075.png), ![item 3083](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3083.png), ![item 3742](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3742.png), ![item 3102](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3102.png), ![item 3026](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3026.png).

I also don't agree with the ![item 3078](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3078.png) build, I don't like that the mana is going to waste. I definitely prefer the ![item 3071](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3071.png) to it. Sometimes ![item 3068](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3068.png), ![item 3142](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.20.1/img/item/3142.png), are viable as well

Like I said, it all depends on the matchup. Don't get stuck to one build every time. My build is different every time, except for the few core items I get.
Gnart Even Close1 votes

I build pretty similarly. Against those AP bullies, I also like to get spectre's cowl. I basically never get BoRK because I need tank stats more.

C4KE2 votes

Yeah I generally don't get it, unless I am absolutely stomping. Like at least 8/2 and above, I get it because you can win games by yourself when you are that strong. If I do get it, it's my 3rd or 4th item.

Gnart Even Close1 votes

I tend to play very passively on Gnar, so I rarely get that far ahead. But when I do, it's hilarious when they think only 3 of them can kill me.

MaizeCraze1 votes

Personally I prefer mini gnar to mega gnar, so naturally I dislike how Gnar is played and built in the pro scene. My favorite build on Gnar relies on mini being able to out-duel carries and still be tanky enough to engage as mega. Rushing item 3044 is a must (unless you need item 3211 first), and I prefer item 3078 to item 3071 whenever the enemy team has 2 or fewer tanks, because trinity force adds an insane amount of damage to both mini Gnar's harass and mega Gnar's burst.

An optimal full build for me looks something like item 3111 item 3078 item 3153 item 3143 item 3065 item 3022 , with the 6th item slot being game dependent. Randuins can also be replaced with item 3742 , imo sunfire is the weakest of the 3 armor + HP items for Gnar.

luckmallory1 votes

Sunfire is the best because it allows you to go mega incredibly fast in team fights.

Penns1 votes

I dont even think going Mega Gnar as fast as possible in team fights is that good anymore. Like back in the squishy- meta, I would always wait until full rage to engage a fight, but now its more like ~50- 70 rage so that I can kite all those "tanks" without transforming into a useless meat ball instantly (unless you can reach the enemy backline, then thats good ofc).

luckmallory2 votes

The reason it is so popular is that it allows you to hit mega super fast in the case that any fight breaks out. If a team fight breaks out and you are at 20 rage, without sunfire you are going to take a bit to reach 100, but with sunfire you can reach it in around 2-21/2 seconds. Your team needs your ult and more often then not i love going mega early for the initiation CC and tankiness and then mini for chasing anyone after or kiting back if you lose. I have played games however where i built more offensively and based my game around mini gnar, but the best Gnar will use his Mega gnar with extremely high base values to win games.

Penns1 votes

Well I could say "dont let your enemies engage if you have 20 rage and just poke", but that depends on your team as well so... eh.

I never really liked getting sunfire early on Gnar since Mega Gnar often feels like the worse form since it hurts your chasing power + you cant kite at all anymore. And late game its not really worth either since its stats are so low and item 3742 item 3143 item 3075 item 3026 exist.

luckmallory2 votes

Mega gnar is by far easier to get kills in lane with than mini gnar. Also You don't go mega gnar for the stats, you go for the potential 4 seconds of chain cc and the gigantic damage sponge you are while in it. You win lane with mini gnar. You win game with mega gnar

I think Ohmwrecker is the worst

ChaosThief1 votes

Wait, what's an ohmwrecker? Is that a new item?

I thought you could only get randuins, dead mans or sunfire.

Gnart Even Close1 votes

it's been in the game for a couple seasons now, but it was most recently reworked last preseason. It's a terrible item, so nobody really knows about it, sort of like Zephyr or Guinsoo's Rageblade.

ChaosThief1 votes

I was kidding. It disables turrets. It's just too situational, not really terrible.

Gnart Even Close1 votes

lol my b. it's hard to tell sarcasm by reading, and i know people who actually haven't heard of it. it's not really a bad item, it's just outclassed by other items, even for tower diving. i've built it before, but only as a joke in normals. it really feels too weak to compete with the other armor/health items. it would be nice to see it, along with towers, buffed

ChaosThief1 votes

I understand the "can't read sarcasm part" very well.

Also it would be buffed if towers were buffed, it only really needs towers to be strong for it to be good.

Gnart Even Close1 votes

It would be nice for it to give at least 400 health instead of the meager 300 it gives as of now. but that is an excellent point you made. knowing riot, they'll implement something like %health true damage on towers because why not?

MaizeCraze1 votes

As I said above, I prefer mini to mega. As such, Sunfire is the worst option for my playstyle and my post reflects that.

Gnart Even Close1 votes

Trinity Force is much more expensive than The Black Cleaver and some of the stats are wasted on Gnar (i.e. mana; crit chance and ap aren't very strong but don't go to waste). BotRK makes Gnar very squishy, so I don't like it.

MaizeCraze1 votes

Black cleaver doesn't give you a minimum of 864 additional damage (before resistances) in your mega Gnar combo, nor does it significantly improve dueling potential as mini Gnar. As I said earlier, if the enemy team is mostly squishies, trinity force is the item I take without question (unless I am massively behind).

I encourage you to test Gnar with a triforce instead of cleaver if you haven't already.

Gnart Even Close1 votes

Black Cleaver gives more health, more AD, cooldown reduction, and shreds the enemies' armor to make your teammates do more damages. Not to mention it is 703 gold cheaper and doesn't waste any stats. Trinity Force does do more damage, but that is not Gnat's primary role, at least not the way he is most commonly played.

MaizeCraze1 votes

703 gold cheaper without taking into account how much the passives are worth nor the gold efficiency of the item. On manaless champions, item 3078 is 109% gold efficient, cleaver is 105% gold efficient. Both share the rage passive, but trinity force doesn't share its spellblade passive with cleaver. According to the wiki, Mega Gnar gets about 10,350 gold value from spellblade's passive at level 18. In order for cleaver to match that, its armor shred must be worth 10k gold (LW's 35% armor pen, while for one champion, is worth 860g).

And as I said before, I like mini more than mega, so I prefer kiting over tanking.

Gnart Even Close1 votes

The gold efficiency does not affect the price of an item... I was saying you can get it earlier. Trinity Force is much stronger damage wise, but as a tank, Black Cleaver is better due to it being more support oriented and giving better defense, while being much cheaper. The mana goes to waste, and the crit chance is unreliable. Attack speed is nearly useless in Mega Form, although it is very potent in Mini Form. The AP does not affect Gnar's damage output much at all, as only his Hyper passive and ult scale with AP. BTW, Spellblade's gold value (based off of Sheen's version, but doubled since it doe twice as much damage) is valued at 512, which is far less than the 860 gold from the armor pen. Although the armor reduction needs to be stacked, it applies to your WHOLE TEAM. That means you are also increasing your ADC's damage significantly. It comes down to a playstyle preference, but in competitive play, Gnar is built around his Mega form's utility and tankiness.

MaizeCraze1 votes

Check trinity force's wiki page--spellblade can be seen as worth 6,088-10,512 gold. Quick calculation for mega Gnar: one AD is worth 36 gold. Triforce procs for 144*2=288 damage, so 10,368 gold total. Noted that this is not a permanent buff, but spellblade comes up frequently enough that the case can be made. Cleaver's armor pen valuation is harder to gauge because of several variables. One point of armor pen is worth 12 gold. To match Spellblade (and assuming 3/5 of your team is AD and they deal damage), you would need to shred 288 armor.

I would argue that the attack speed on mega gnar is actually extremely valuable--it allows you to get off a full ult combo (R+AA+W+AA+Q+AA) if the enemy has any sort of tenacity. Gnar proc'ing W 4 times with triforce will be 120 more damage, which as you said isn't alot, but it is not insignificant.

Don't knock it until you've tried it. I don't know your playstyle, but if you enjoy kiting, try it.

Gnart Even Close1 votes

The Spellblade is not worth that much gold, otherwise it would be broken and everyone would build it. It's worth around 512 gold when calculated using the Sheen's Spellblade gold value. Black Cleaver is more bruiser/teamfight oriented, while Trinity Force is more damage and burst oriented. Cooldown Reduction is much more important on Mega Gnar as it will let him spam his abilities more, while Attack Speed is stronger on Mini Gnar because of his Hyper Passive. Most people build around Mega Gnar, as he simply brings more utility and tankiness. I'm sure it's strong, but I personally don't think it's worth the gold investment and item tradeoffs.

MaizeCraze1 votes

The value you took is not the actual value of the spellblade passive--it is just how much the passive needs to be worth for Sheen to be considered cost efficient.

Gnart Even Close1 votes

How do you propose to calculate the value of the Spellblade passive on Sheen then? It is not AD, like your calculations are based off of. It is closer to on-hit physical damage, but it only triggers once after using a spell, so it does not have the same value. The value of on-hit physical damage is 20 gold per one point. If it gives 288 on-hit physical damage according to you, it would still only be worth 5,760 gold, not 10,512 like you said. And this is keeping in mind that the damage is MUCH more conditional. Black Cleaver can give massive armor reduction to your whole team. If it gives 30% armor penetration to both you and the ADC, applying to the whole enemy team, the value is 7167 gold, which is much greater than the 5,760 gold form the Triforce Spellblade. Both of these are inconsistent, but one is better in teamfights (where Mega Gnar shines) and one is better in 1v1 scenarios. Gnar scales incredibly well with defensive stats and has a massive teamfight presence, so I see no reason to build Triforce consistently. If you like it and get good results from it, then by all means go ahead, I'm just sharing my thoughts.

MaizeCraze1 votes

I feel like I'm stuck on repeat. http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Trinity_Force The attack may be classified as on-hit, but it scales from base attack damage. Thus, each point of damage it does (from base AD, not any on hit damage) is worth 36 gold.

Trinity force is not inconsistent: it appears after you use an ability regardless, then is on CD for 1.5 seconds, and then is ready to be cast again.

Where are you getting your value of 7,167? Also, Gnar will never get 6 procs of Cleaver on all 5 champions at once--max stacks on more than one champ is pushing it while mega.

Don't knock it until you try it. Please, just try it at some point and see how you do. One game obviously isn't a sufficient sample size but it is better than nothing.

Gnart Even Close1 votes

The damage only procs on hit, so spell damage doesn't scale with it, etc. This means the damage is classified as damage on-hit, not as AD. The difference is important to recognize, as the gold value per point changes from 36 to 20. And you said yourself that the cooldown is 1.5 seconds. This means that it can only happen about every other attack for Mini Gnar, assuming his spells are always off cooldown. I gave the theoretical best cases for both items, which are both unlikely. While the Trinity Force does give more damage, the Black Cleaver gives more health and utility. Many people build for teamfights, making the Black Cleaver the superior choice. The Black Cleaver is also significantly cheaper, making it easier to get early and let Gnar build more items immediately afterwards. I, and many others, prefer Black Cleaver, but Trinity Force is perfectly viable on a more kite-oriented build. In fact, before Gnar was nerfed, Trinity Force was a core item on Gnar as he didn't need the tank stats quite as much. The Black Cleaver building out of Phage didn't really help much either, as now Rage can be obtained from Black Cleaver instead of just Trinity Force.

I mainly like to adapt to the situation.

First Blood/Early Kill for me: Bilgewater Cutlass -> BOTRK Even lane: Phage -> Black Cleaver Giving up kills to AD: Chain Vest -> Sunfire Giving up kills to AP: Hexdrinker OR Spectre's Cowl

This all depends on my team and their team and how I'm doing. Gnar is one of the most adaptive champions in the game, item-wise.

Gnart Even Close1 votes

I love Gnar's adaptive playstyle. That's pretty similar to what I do, except I almost never get BotRK. I also adapt my starting items to the matchup. Long Sword for easy/medium and heavy AP lanes and Cloth Armor for hard AD lanes. I either turn my Long Sword into a Phage or a Hexdrinker, and the Long Sword helps a ton. The Cloth Armor lets me get the Warden's Mail earlier. I think I'm gonna practice my mad Sunfire Cape mechanics a bit until I get the hang of controlling rage with it. I started with it, then stopped using it, so I'm a bit rusty with it. Sunfire Cape also has a bug where the range it shows by hovering over it is bugged, so that doesn't really help.

i normally rush item 3022 because it gives some dmg and tank. Then I build more tank depending on what I am up against. item 3065 item 3143 item 3068 whatever I need, armor or mr or just hp. I finish up with a item 3071

Gnart Even Close1 votes

The only problems I have with rushing item 3022 are that a lot of the power is accessed only once the item is complete, and that resistances are much stronger than HP early on. Usually, I rush Phage into a resist item, and try to get Frozen Mallet complete later. Thanks for your response!
