My thoughts on the 3 tank updates now that some time has passed
Sejuani - Overall, this feels like the best rework of the three. The new W might not be dramatically innovative, but skillshots are a tried-and-tested way of making champions more mechanically engaging. Having the first hit knock minions and monsters into range of the second hit is also a really nice touch, you can tell there was a lot of attention to the details of this rework. The new E is also pretty cool, although it feels weird to have the bulk of the damage separate from the spellcast. I like how the kit is really simple on the surface, but has a lot of nuance in its mechanics. Sejuani feels refreshed and I don't think she'll need any major kit changes for a long time. Probably my biggest complaint is that her new passive has a visual effect (layer of ice on Bristle's head) that looks really ugly on some of her skins. With the exceptions of Bear Cavalry and her classic skin, it doesn't look like the artists put any thought into the color balance.
Zac - This rework is more of a mixed bag. The new Q has really unique and fun mechanics, but it doesn't feel balanced in combination with his other spells. You can miss your E, and you'll still easily be able to connect both parts of your Q with whoever you intended to hit, and they'll be dragged into position for you to ult them. It feels too strong even in normal ganks. The finer points of his Q mechanics still need adjustments before he'll be a balanced champion, right now he has too much CC and it's too reliable. It really doesn't feel good when his spell damage is nerfed to rubble to balance fundamental kit problems. His W is a pure, dedicated damage ability, but it doesn't feel like it does any meaningful damage and that feels very wrong.
Maokai - This the rework that left most people unimpressed on first release. His new ultimate is clearly worse than his old ultimate, which is understandable for what is supposed to be a more niche ability. I think it's thematically appropriate for Maokai and has reasonable impact when used correctly. The changes to his passive are okay, they make it feel more consistent in how much it heals you over time and I like that gets charged by being struck by spells (as opposed to spells simply being cast in your general vicinity). The biggest issue I have with the new kit is that his basic abilities had relatively minor changes, even though these were (and still are) are major source of frustration when playing against Maokai. There is very low counterplay against his basic W-Q combo as a melee fighting against him, and his Flash-W-Q initiation is still too reliable. The interaction between his E and bushes also feels somewhat gimmicky for what is usually a very low damage champion. This is a champion that has been widely criticized over the years for being strong and effective despite being less difficult to master than Garen. But nothing significant has been done to raise his skill ceiling even though this was a stated goal of the tank update.
