The support item changes are extremely questionable, especially for one reason.
We would still like Sightstone times to be a reflection of the support player’s skill, so we are putting it on the quest reward rather than just giving it out at a specific game time.
So if teams are behind, they will never get to catch back up because they can't even get the vision they need. If teams are ahead, they will be much more ahead and have a massive advantage of vision.
I know Riot likes snowballing, but this is actually why "being ahead = more vision" concept would create very binary results. The reason "unlimited wards" were removed back from season 3 not just because of how supports had nearly zero items (with a lucky chance for an Emblem of Valor), but because teams that were behind were never able to catch back up since the losing team can't even afford to light up the map.
I, too, love the item actives and am sad to see them go, but if we're talking optimization most high elo players and pros don't really build them. It sucks to take away the "fun" and throw away diversity out of the window (as if they haven't done enough of that already), but the more important issue with the changes is how things will snowball.
TL;DR: With the support item changes, it would snowball already winning teams even harder because they have vision, and the losing team won't because they can't just get a sightstone and catch up on vision much like back in season 3.
