How Does Matchmaking Work?

Recently I was wondering how matchmaking works. Usually when I play with my group, which was all the time, we would be paired with anyone from Bronze 5 up to Gold 3ish. I got a job recently and haven't been able to play with them much, and so I played a few games solo. In both those games there was at least 1 gold and 1 diamond player, with the other two being mostly silvers. I wont lie, I didn't do too hot in those two games. There was a very apparent level of skill that I was not used too. As such, is it possible that my group brings down the average mmr, and that mine is simply higher, or was it just luck? And don't mistake me, I am by far unworthy of a even a gold border, let alone a diamond.

More likely to get afkers and toxic/bad people if you afk and are toxic. Also you asked a lot of questions I really can't answer them all, as for the matchmaking if you are in gold you can only play with people above or below your current rank which is diamond or silver, the process is completely random but the team that gets better players with gain less if they win and loose more if they are defeated, the opposite goes for the lower ranked team.
