My idea on how to make supports more fun to play with whilst not making adc's overwhelming

This discussion will be an insight of my experience with different supports. I welcome any ideas/experience that you guys want to share and are related to the topic.

I was a soraka main for a long time and i have also tried playing with other supports like Lulu, Janna and Nami. So pretty much i was a hardcore enchanter support main. As you all know that enchanters rely on the allies to deal as much damage by sacrificing damage for increased heal/shield, hence the reason why i think riot introduced %healing instead of pure AP in support items. However I found that they quickly get boring to play with and annoying to play against. After the adc's got buffed or lets say the assassins got nerfed and supports got buffed all around, it basically meant that now adc's were more difficult to kill and with their insane sustain late game they became overwhelming.

Whilst playing with soraka, her sustain was really rewarding but overtime i realized that my performance meant little if my adc was incompetent. Basically i felt like i was only useful if my allies were useful and this really put me off enchanters and i started maining the likes of velkoz and brand.

As a mage support i felt like my presence was much more dominant than the adc for at least half of the match but my adc mostly didn't like the so called "ks" and also the fact that i had no heal/shield. Although playing with mage supports you are less reliant on your adc/allies. This meant that even if my adc was (not so good) I could still carry it till at least the laning phase is over. But over time I realized that “death is the best cc” is only good when you’re fighting against the enemy and not when you need to protect your dying ally.

Then i started using Lux as a support after she got some buffs. I realized that sona, karma and lux and to some extent lulu are so much better in many ways as supports than pure sustain supports like Soraka, Nami and Janna. They can do damage if lets say your adc just doesn't and they can also buy athenes and go passive. They have good cc or utility whilst having enough damage to punish enemies, especially lux, so you are not completely reliant on your team to do the damage. Not to mention they have tons more counterplay as compared to other supports and much more fun to play with.

I have generalized the scenario quite a bit but the main point i am trying to get across is that as a support i want more options. I am so sick and tired of buying solari/ardent/redemption every single game and hoping that my adc is somewhat decent. With mage supports i felt lacking in my support but with secondary supports like karma, lux i felt like there is always an option to go aggressive or passive without relying on luck to get decent team mates. THE biggest factor why lux feels so rewarding as a support is because she has utility. I feel that spamming shields/heals on the adc makes support very boring and not to mention brain-dead and annoying to play against. With snares and skill-shot shields i felt like i have a lot of counter play and the ability to punish enemies for their mistakes. They also have enough utility, which if used correctly, can peel for their adc.

In a nutshell it makes me feel like i am also part of the team as a support and that i am also allowed to kill not just to earn money but as a way to decrease the enemy's strength and indirectly benefiting my team. I hope many of you out their also feel the same but if supports were to be nerfed then i guess giving them an option to go via the damage route will really encourage people to play support more. Thank you for reading.

Edit:

To those who were unsatisfied with my answer as compared to my title then here is an short explanation. Pure enchanters like janna, soraka and nami are rewarding to play with due to their sustain and spammable heal/shields but lack the choices not only when it comes to their build path but also on how diversely they can be used in a game. With semi-supports like Lux, they have a more diverse itemization with enough utility in their kits to peel and help their team, and at the same time having enough damage to punish enemies for their mistakes. This approach makes sure that supports don't buy nor have every single item/skill that is focused on protecting their adc's. This while not making supports any weaker also doesn't make adc's any stronger. The biggest reason why adc's are dominant right now is because of how strong supports are and hence i suggest that the power budget of supports is shifted from their passive gameplay into a more aggressive gameplay. This will resolve the issue of supports being un-fun to play with and against, and make them more self-reliant and diverse in their game-play, whilst making adc's less overwhelming.

Suggestion One idea comes to mind would be to increase AP in support items and take out some or all of %healing.

Supports could also do with more aggressive yet passive items like athenes where they get enough AP and MR/armor. Also why I believe that banshee is a step forward in the right direction. Also i do think that mages suffer from having few build paths so they will also indirectly benefit from this. I do however think that for this idea to be successful the current support items have to be nerfed so people are attracted to the new more aggressive support items.

I agree with most everything you have said here, but I think you rambled a bit and lost the main topic that you started with in your title. Can you explain how this would accomplish what you set out to do with your title? (IE make supports more fun to play without making marksmen oppressive.)

I also enjoy Lux as a support for the reasons you stated. Is your idea to make supports more self reliant by giving them more damage?

Correct and not just give them more self-reliability but also this will make adc's less overwhelming and supports more fun to play with. Since you are a support i believe you atleast need utility/cc to help your adc from time to time and hence why i didn't like playing brand/velkoz as pure supports in comparison to sona, lux and karma.

you forgot sightstone. The "required" support equips and getting flamed for not buying them is big reason why I quit playing those modes. I only ever played support as secondary role or if autofilled, but b/c everyone hate play support I was playing that 70% of time instead of my preferred role (mid). Now I just play ARAM or ARURF now.

[zombie-brand-clap] This was beautiful... Shame if we got a support like this "OMG NERF WHAT THE F---" would be on the forums CONSTANTLY because people are WHINING crybabies. Look at ALL the support hate right now. It's RIDICULOUS.

We support mains have it hard enough in gameplay, playability and fun. We only get 1 MAYBE 2 of those. I find that support especially right now is in its WORST time period. Next patch when item 3504 gets nerfed. It will be in its WORST spot ever. I'm literally considering quitting support due to the garbage community that keeps complaining about us for NO REASON.

And about to go onward towards a better role, something I can have ALL three and have FUN. Instead of feeling like an item bi--- all game.

my issue isnt playing support what makes support unfun for me is dealing with toxic fuks as adcs had a handful of them in games the last few days

kept getting flamed raged and cussed at cuz my adc didnt know how to position correctly vs blitzcrank and kept dying to his hooks ... clearly 100% of my fault so after i got sick of their flaming and bitching i just afked not worth dealing with

This issue is more related to how toxic it is to play against blitz-crank. Its a major pain to lain against a blitzcrank in soloq because i always pray that my adc knows how to counter blitz otherwise its auto-lose as far as the laning phase goes.

the issue was the minion wave was in lane... blitz was on one side of the wave the adc was on the same side ...

claimed it was my fault i didnt stand between her and the blitz

im like you are stupid your positioning is bad...

then another thing she super pushed the wave non stop so if he grabbed her it would be into his turret.... or i would need to recall and she would push out have no wave with her trying to farm and get caught

once again all of this was my fault according to the adc

Sometimes it helps to look at other sources and see what they are doing right and wrong. Supports in league are the slaves of ADCs majority of the time to be honest. Paladins, a game I played for a good while, had some great supports that could even be considered a threat when played well. They did more than just be the teams bitch like how mercy can ONLY HEAL in overwatch. They could do multiple things and often had the ability to defend themselves. League supports mostly relay too much on their ADs to do anything.
