what is core to Volibear's identity?

title

i am doing some little theorycraft and i am having trouble deciding if i actually want to keep much from his original kit beyond his lightning and his bite; i don't think his flip or his roar are really that iconic to him in their current forms and cooler things could be put in

if voli gets a vgu or a rework soon what would you say is a must-keep in some fashion and how drastically should it change, if at all

Honestly gameplay wise he doesn't feel very unique. He's like a cross between Trundle, Garen, and Mundo except with a knock up

Tossing idiot skimirshers into his team's damage and THUNDERBOLT HANDS

See Ursa from DOTA. Many of the older champs are ports or inspired by DOTA characters (this is not so apparent now, because some of them were reworked over the years). Voli was supposed to be a tanky melee DPS that gets kited, but over the years we got too much hard CC and mobility champions, so now he is garbage tier.

Regen passive and Lightning hands

  1. lightning/thunder
  2. bite
  3. Not necessarily the flip but running someone down on all fours

no particular order btw but I would weight lightning/thunder the highest

I'd say...

  1. Lighting quick movement speed (Q)
  2. Lightning attacks (R)
  3. Singling out an enemy for mauling (W)

I basically see him as someone who is as a bear going the speed of sound with a lightning theme (which fits the speed part). If there is one thing a Volibear VGU should be the epitome of, it's making Volibear the, in a very literal sense, the "Shock and Awe" champion. So, what I would do:

  1. Move current R effect to his Passive (he shouldn't be a lightning bear only half the time) and rebalance
  2. Rework Q to be more exciting
  3. Rework W to be more exciting
  4. Replace E
  5. Replace R
