Is it possible to get someone working on new MR items for tanks?

MR itemization is pretty meh for the one class that is supposed to stack resistances. Let me explain why:

item 3065 Spirit Visage: If you don't heal, this item feels pretty inefficient to build. 10% CDR isn't terrible, and it gives some pretty hefty stats, but like I said if you don't heal it doesn't feel good.

item 3102 Banshees Veil: If you're a tank, what one spell are you so afraid of? This item 9 times out of 10 is built as a 6th item defensive item for a squishy, because a spell shield on a 45 second cooldown is pretty crap if you have 5k HP.

item 3190 Locket of the Iron Solari: Since the consistent nerfs, isn't really efficient for a solo lane tank who needs the MR for laning against an AP damage dealer.

item 3174 Athene's Unholy Grail: Only good if you need AP, most tanks don't need AP. Doesn't offer any real durability.

item 3001 Abyssal Scepter: Only good if you need AP, most tanks don't need AP. Doesn't offer any real durability.

I do have a couple of ideas for items, if anyone would be interested. The first fills the "I need lane presence without building actual damage" need that tanks sometimes have, it's basically an MR Sunfire Cape. Cheaper than current MR itemization but less defensive stats.

Sunfire Cloak:

item 3751 + item 1057 + 930 gold (same price as Sunfire Cape)

50 MR, 500 HP

Unique Passive: Immolate

My next item is one that I really think could be worth doing, because a lot of tanks need to build mana on their first item as well as needing MR for lane (most true tanks are mana hungry: Sion Malphite Amumu Maokai, etc). Basically this is a sustain monster that gives less MR than the other tank items but comparable HP to make it compete yet be a strategic niche in MR itemization as it gives less raw defense but helps you last in a long lane of being harassed, you'll be able to use your abilities to farm from range and recover from harassment a little easier. However you will be squishier to an all-in and for fights/skirmishes. Low combination cost but you have to buy two bracers in the process and it is 100-200 gold more expensive than the other health and MR items out there so it's kinda clunky to balance out the power. It's possible that the Health needs to be lowered to 400 or 450 to balance out the amount of sustain it gives.

Chalice of the Undying:

item 3028 + item 3801 + item 3801 + 600 gold

150% hp regen, 50% base mana regen, 50 MR, 500 HP

Unique Passive: Font

I also think there could be a Catalyst MR item, but I wasn't sure how to build one.

Not sure if it would result in a balanced game state to just dump both of those in with the other options available, but even one would make tanks feel a lot less remorseful about having to build MR. Armor is easy to build according to what you need and cheap, but MR is most certainly not if you're a tank. I'm not sure if that's an intentional handicap or not, but if it isn't these could help out a lot. If it were up to me I might even help to look into replacing current "tank" MR items which feel very specific but not generally good at all for these more generally useful items.

MR itemization is actually in an alright spot right now. Magic damage only scales with AP (not like attack speed, AD and crit chance scale physical damage), so it's linear; health also counters magic damage in a way that it doesn't counter physical.

I mostly agree with you, but to be picky, magic damage also scales on CDR (analogous to AS).

But to be picky AD champs use abilities and CDR as well.

Not to mention having as easy if not an easier time maxing out CDR as AD.

MisterHealYoGirl1 votes

It does, but not at the same scale. If Annie blows her whole combo on a Vayne, her CDR might be the difference between getting three Qs off in the rest of the fight or getting five, but for Jinx, her attack speed is the difference between her getting off five autoattacks or twenty.

Actually some champions have magic damage abilities that can scale with AD by being hybrid abilities or they just scale with AD.

Yorick has AD scaling magic damage for example.

But it's not crit-scaling magic damage, and it doesn't scale with attack speed. The only crit scaling magic damage in the game right now is Corki's autoattacks, with the removal/nerfing of GlaivePlank. It's a big part of Corki's power, actually.

But we do have attackspeed scaling AP champions.

MisterHealYoGirl1 votes

True: Kayle, Teemo, and Azir all scale with both AP and attack speed. However, that doesn't mean that we need a whole new item JUST to mess with those three.

TF and Diana.

Those seem like more of a stretch. They do have autoattack mechanics in their kits, but you wouldn't build Nashor's Tooth on Twisted Fate just so you could get the most out of his E. Diana can build some attack speed in a bruiser build, but the ones I've seen generally go for straight AP and magic pen.

Devourer diana is pretty fun.

dafuq you smokin bro! visage and veil are the two best MR items in the game, flat out... if you get those two combined there's not a single mage in the game that can even half health you with a full build D:

1k health and 140 MR on two item slots... that alone makes any mage never want to touch you... when compared to armor items who have to compete with the sustained damage from crit and autoattacks on top of AD casters... it's not even close how good MR items are currently

also for the catalyst MR item... no can do as long as Ryze scales his damage from mana, it's the reason catalyst (and therefore mana) was removed from banshee's veil in the first place :)

You forgot ZZ'rot portal, it's great. Hexdrinker is not bad. Merc Treads are not a full defense item but still noticeable. Locket Solari is not very good for the MR alone, but it has a very noticeable amount of HP too.

But the core thing is, even if you don't make the best use of their unique passive, Banshee and Spirit are still good items, and a Tank rarely needs more than 2 MR items.

So I quite like the new items you're suggesting, but I am not convinced they are really needed.

Only if the HP and MR on all the current ones are halved and better anti-tank itemization for AP is added to the game.

eh? how much do you still want to punish ap?

KoggyStyle1 votes

give it up.... most players like damage.... tanks used to not take (ginormous die in 6 seconds as a full tank vs a comp with one type of dmg)damage... here we are today.

also heres a hint, damage dealers hate counter building unless it makes bigger numbers pop up.

Mr itemization is actually really strong right now. For generic tank use you've got visage, Banshee's, Merc treads and locket. I don't know of any tank who would build more than four Mr items. If you wanted to, most pure tanks do some magic damage so you could go with Abyssal and zzzrot or guardian angel if you for some reason want to Mr items.

If your tank is physical then you have maw and scimitar which are nice.

I can't think of any champ that would even build 6 Mr items except maybe Galio, who is also the only tank I would build Athenes on.

TLDR, ad, ap, and pure tanks all have more than 6 Mr items readily available for purchase, and they all have reasonable build paths too.

You also have to remember that MR shuts down magic users more than armor does physical damage users because the Physical folks have auto attacks that actually do something. More magic damage folks dont. Even with less total mr, the practical impact is larger.

Is it time we get item 3112 on SR?

I'd really take any gold efficient tank item available. Its sad that ZZ is disabled.

Spirit Visage doesn't necessitate insane amounts of healing or in-kit sustain to be worth. It amps your health regen enough to be good enough by itself. Also, Visage alone will invalidate pretty much any mage's damage against you so... you don't need more.

MR items are the best they've been in a very long time - Visage in particular is crazy strong right now on tanks. You don't need better options.

Kalarepa1 votes

Better MR items = nerf to mages. I don't think, we need that right now.

elon wątroba1 votes

Maybe not straight mres item, because flat health mitigates burst pretty well. I would suggest an item with a passive which decreases magic sustained damage (dots/amummu w etc).
