Why people buy Sunfire Cape on Gnar?

Seriously, it is a mediocre item for him. If you want an HP/armor item, just buy item 3143.

Gnar is a ranged champion, and as such, he will hardly be on range for enemies to be damaged by the "aura". Even when he transforms on Mega Gnar, he is better off taking advantage of the superior tankyness that Randuin's Omen provides due to its superior armor and HP. He is a bruiser after all, so he doesn't need Sunfire Cape's damage that much, especially since he can just buy a item 3071. And even if Gnar were to buy an armor item that provides "damage", there is item 3075, which works very well with him since he doesn't need to be in range, and actually deals more damage (if enemies have enough AD)

Also, he already has so much waveclear with Mega Gnar's abilities, so I don't think that Sunfire Cape's pushing power is needed. Lastly, Sunfire Cape falls off late game due to enemies purchasing magic resistance items. A single item 3190 is enough to make Sunfire Cape's damage irrelevant during teamfights.

Its a common misconception that Randuins is always better than Sunfire cape. Malphite for example - It gives him good stats against pretty much anyone who uses AD. Shen as well - it gives him wave clear. Renekton - it provides another AOE on top of his ultimate's. In this instance I would assume Gnar wanted an easy armor buy against his top lane opponent so he bought chainmail first back. It is good on his Mega Gnar form as he can lock people up for long enough to get lots of sunfire damage onto them.

Randuin is better than Sunfire Cape on Gnar, which does not mean that it is better on Malphite.

In fact, Malphite makes better use of Sunfire Cape, given how he is a melee tank that scales very well with magic damage items, especially if you build him as a magic penetration AP bruiser. He already has his Q to slow people anyway.

Shen uses Sunfire Cape mostly because of his lack of waveclear, otherwise I don't see how Sunfire Cape would be good for him, unless you are building him as an AP tank with Abyssal Scepter (I like to build him that way, it is hard to last hit minions and he has less dueling potential but he has better burst and attrition potential). However, most of time he is build as an AD tank with Trinity Force/Blade of the Ruined King.

Renekton makes better use of Sunfire Cape as Gnar for the reasons you stated, and because he is melee, but again, it isn't that necessary for him. Renekton already packs so much damage, and he is an AD, he will not buy magic penetration to take advantage of Sunfire Cape's magic damage.

Sunfire Cape is better on melee AP tanks and bruisers that tend to buy magic penetration items that give tankyness, such as Abyssal Scepter and Liandry's Torment. It is also a situtional option for AD bruisers that have natural AoE damage and are MELEE - Gnar is neither of them.

Oh, I agree randuin is better on Gnar! Im saying Gnar sometimes has hard lanes and so first buying that chain vest on the first back makes his lane much easier in that situation, and I believe the only items that build out of chain vest now is sunfire cape, thornmail, and GA. Those other two items are not as attractive early game as sunfire is.

No its a situational thing Sunfire has Better stats and is great against melee champions sunfire is perfect for gnar hes weak in mini when the top laner wants to attack you and strong in mega when you want to attack them Sunfire also has better stats then randuians I mean sunfire is the better item unless your facing a yasuo because the only thing that randuians is ganna do is prevent crit damanage or slow Somone so u can run. Sunfire is great on gnar

I believe it's simply because people don't understand that even though Gnar can be built as a bruiser different bruisers require different items. People expect a generic bruiser build to work on him when they really need something far more specialized.

I don't even like building Omen on him. A lot of my build is focused on doing damage/surviving in Mini form. Mega form is purely for ccing in teamfights for me.

While you shouldn't rush Sunfire Cape, depending on the match up and if you want to push or not. Sunfire cape is useful since it can trigger Mega Gnar much faster by dealing magic damage to nearby minions and enemies which overall builds up rage really fast. This is if you are going to be tanking, and wanting to front line but lack rage (due to enemy's initiation or team mate's initiation even though they should wait until you are in the 80s for rage) jumping in with sunfire during a team fight lets you access your CC quicker if you want it. Yes, Omen is good and yes you can get that first. But ultimately it just comes down to what to build in certain situations and should by no means ever follow a copy pasted build.

The only situation where I can see Sunfire Cape being good is if you are planning to build Gnar as a full tank, without any actual damage items (not even Black Cleaver) and you need more armor than what Randuin, Thornmail and Ninja Tabi already offer.

This build is, extremely focused on Mega Gnar's insane base stats and amazing CC. However, it is mediocre for Mini Gnar, given how he has horrible base stats and has almost no CC.

It's specifically because the passive helps build Gnar's rage faster. If you can get the hand of it, you can control Gnar's rage much more efficiently and it does give decent defensive stats. The damage also helps his teamfighting, but the damage does fall off once everyone builds MR.
