I oddly enjoy this broken meta

Broken, not like it's op or anything, I mean like legitimately broken. I decided to solo and fill all queues this season to really test myself (but enough bragging) and it's really opened my eyes to each role. I've learned a couple of things, and come away with a big benefit to myself.

  1. Jungling is hard. I've never really jungled since season... 4? ish? tank meta! So it's giving me a real appreciate for great junglers. Support your junglers, because they'll support you back!

  2. Supporting as a traditional support is damn near impossible. BUT if you get a really good one, they can about single-handedly win you the lane. Just had a great game with a taric, that monster zoned, locked down and positioned perfectly. Love love LOVE your good supports. Make sure they you you appreciate them, I think it's an underappreciated role.

  3. Midlane isn't fun anymore. With the constant, endless, painful ganks... It's ceased to be fun unless you play something ridiculously mobile mid. RIP artillery mages. And praise be to the instagibbing assassins ;_; No! NO! I'm not salty I promise!

  4. Bottom lane is nearly perfect. (for me anyway.) I cannot, and I mean I can NOT marksman... BUT with this wonderful nuke to traditional marksman I can just run Brand bot and it's fiiiine!

One criticism though, games are too short, and the damage is just too damn high. Like at least 20% more than it should be. Either way I've let go of being super competitive and playing "meta" and I'm all chill now.

Rip 4 promos to plat, finally.

The meta would be interesting if it wasn't based on 10 minute stompfests where one team is held hostage for the rest of the game.

LatetotheRace3 votes

I wouldn't necessarily say it's over at champ select. There are certainly those kind of games, but I'd say a good 70% games are more or less fair up until the point where one side starts feeding their ass off. On account of bad match making XD

sigh You just reminded me of the days before role select. Things were so much more interesting when I had to keep an understanding of multiple roles other than my main.

I saw a Taric Leona botlane on one of my teams a few weeks ago. It utterly smashed its opposition and only was held back from a win by literally every other position in the game (including me) throwing badly.

I have since taken to calling it "The One True Botlane" - a botlane so committed to sound principles of tanky supporting that it forgot its ADC.

LatetotheRace2 votes

Botlane is just whatever you can make work. It's like a little homage to the old seasons.

Mighty Mortein2 votes

It's better than having a set meta of 5-10 ADCs every fucking game. I for one enjoy this clown fiesta. You wanna go Brand/Leona bot? Go for it. You wanna play ADC Yorick? Go for it. I'm so glad crit ADCs arent needed anymore. It's a nice change.

I think it's not as bad as many people on the boards make it out to be--i mostly play support or ADC, and I've found that a lot of the same stuff still works to a great deal of effectiveness.......especially when the opposing lane has one of those goofy Season 8 Novelty Comps that doesn't make any sense. that's not to say that I don't think S8 is without issues, though!

the movespeed runes have a disproportionate effect on midlaners/what items they're able to buy to reach peak damage-output while still being able to run to bot quickly to get a gank off, and as a Botlane Guy this drives me insane.........relentless hunter provides the same strategic-benefit that buying mobis would, and has made roaming a LOT more enticing for these guys once tier2 boots and celerity are factored in as well. it does the game a huge disservice when one of the biggest complaints it faces is mobility-creep, and these changes disproportionately benefit either the types of champs who already have a mobility surplus or who straight-up wield this kind of generous stat-boost inappropriately and shouldn't have access to it. and, to your point about traditional supports, as enchanters and the typical fare have been pushed out of the spotlight by the recent changes, it's mostly been MAGES and their newfound-mobility creep filling the void in terms of pickrates.

i also think that most of the other runes are really generic and disappointing......the regular ones feel like they only offer a choice between padding your stats or living marginally-longer, the damage-centric keystones suffer from not providing any sort of strategic variance for anyone other than Fighters since there is usually a clearly-better choice for most ranged-DPS-based or poke-based champions, and the other ones are just really really really weird.

New seasons are always kinda goofy but, in spite of these changes and how the general-attitude of many players is very sour, I think the game has been worse states. If I were Riot Games, I'd be issuing an all-hands-on-deck in terms of responding to player feedback because a lot of the new changes seem to be makin a lot of people ask What The Heck's Goin On.

A lot of players seem to have lost patience with LoL, and I see a lot of trolls/griefers too. I think this is messing up the game equally as much as balance decisions on the part of Riot xD

I don't really know what to make of this meta anymore. I just play and try to have fun how ever I can, even if that means that I can't play a champion due to them being incredibly un-viable.

LatetotheRace3 votes

It's a sad time too though. I remember season... 5sih? You could jungle whoever you wanted, build however you wanted... AP aatrox mid anyone? And it could actually work. It is sad that that point in time died.

BLIGHTBRINGER4 votes

I actually hate that metas exist. I remember the days when everyone could play what ever they felt like, like you just mentioned...

Now a days people just play what ever is "freelo" because everyone is trying too hard to win instead of trying to have fun. And that itself makes me feel depressed because I love the game, but sometimes people aren't trying to have fun anymore.

Thefrostyviking2 votes

When the heck did you start playing? O_O

Metas were a thing back when i started in season 3 already....even back towards the end of season 2 when i started looking i think.

LatetotheRace2 votes

Sure they were a thing, but "off-meta" didn't just = instaloss.

Thefrostyviking1 votes

,,,,,That was the case when i started in season 3 too.

You tried running Ashe into Draven/vayne when they were good? Prepare your behind.

Tried playing some slow mage into an assassin then? You might as well AFK if they guy knows their things to avoid feeding the opponent too much least they go in and 1v3 or even 1v5 by oneshotting 3 people at once.

A toplaner that wasnt Jayce/riven/renek or their counters into one of them? Are you trolling? 9x report.

Non assassin jungler? Prepare your ass for the shaco&kha6 and lee invades nonstop until you cant even go inside.

Except those few times AP yi got through and somehow ahead, then your entire team can just go AFK.

Support was even worse back then, as was ADC.

Once assassins got nerfed overall we hit a control meta for midlane that lasted until the assassin rework in season 6.......so pretty much 3 seasons straight with few breaks in between.

With assassins gone the divers were the only junglers like j4/lee/elise, this lasted until feral flare then a while after until cinderhulk....then we had tanks for ages-

Botlane kept shifting between picks for lane dominance, surviving post lane and anti tank.

Diversity existed in lower elo and less skillful opponents, the average silver of then woulda been bronze today, with levels haven risen and info becoming more widespread the old cheese has lost effect and people know how to play against and around things.

People do this, because they find winning fun, not playing stuff that isn't usually played, which isn't as good as other picks.

I don't really remember that and I've been playing since a week after launch. There's been a few times sporadically where "anything goes". The largest diversity of Junglers had to be in Season 3 with the spirit stone item. S2 in general had a lot of diversity, however even back in S1 and S0 there were clear ideas of who is and who is not viable at the time.

This thing where people talk about a mythical point in time in League history where meta didn't exist needs to stop.

I hate it. I'm playing more and more ARAMs. I'm a traditional support... that's bad enough, but I'm in a worse situation.

...I play with friends. Botlane is now the 'd*** around' lane. Go to my match history if you cba, set it to SR. You see those green games? My friends were at work. If they're not first-timing Irelia or EACH taking turns 'seeing if Cait is good' (I will dodge next time.) they're flat out kicking me out of the lane. As someone who's good at support, followed by marksmen, and mages, I'm a little bit massively screwed.

I could stop playing with friends, but I might as well play fortnite where I still can. Or I could just play bruisers bot or assassins mid which are literally classes I've never been attracted to so why not fortnite?

(yes, downvote a subjective opinion, gj internet)

Best part is guessing where everyone gonna go during champion select. And then finding out that you actually missed everything.

Attticus Finch1 votes

If you're below diamond the meta hasn't changed since like S3. Just play what you want and have fun.

LatetotheRace2 votes

I mean... I'm not winning against Fiora/Irelia top lane as "whoever I want." Don't get too ignorant yet.

Tesladin1 votes

If he says the champion does not matter below D3 then he's correct

Because you arent good enough at the game yet. If you're playing below diamond then your opponents aren't good enough for match-ups to matter a whole lot. If you have a strong grasp of how League actually works you can win games regardless of the picks. Pros and high-level players do it all the time with smurphs.

Fiora "counters" Irelia but do you think a D1 Irelia player would feed to a silver Fiora?

Yep it's broken

I have to agree. Jg is hard and always changes. When I saw the jg changes a couple of months ago, I fucking lost it and took refuge mid but I relaized jg isn't that bad. I just couldn't carry as a mid and I dropped from b2 to b4. Also I was bronze 1 at one point with 100 lp but technical difficulties lost me my promos. Then I lost b1 and never came back. Support can singlehaddendly dominate in lane like how I destroyed as brand jg but couldn't stop taking all the kills. I didn't want it to happen but it did and ist like well fuck. My sivir is 0/5 so I might as well take her place. I can't say anything about bot because I suck at it. I'm okay as Vayne but that's it. That's why I don't play bot and haven't for a while.

Emo Twink1 votes

theres a lot of diversity atm but im tired of so much damage flying around. would mind less if there were more armor options for immobile ap champs for those pesky zeds around

VvVVvV1 votes

yeah until your adc locks in yorick into jhin and Lulu just to leave lane 6 minutes later 0 - 5 and down a tower.

Sire Hippington1 votes

if it wasn't for the snowball, powercreep(especially damage and cc), poor state of vision and weak objectives, i'd love this meta. Bot finally open to other picks, mid more versatile(though mages could use some small help), it's theoretically a dream come true. But in practice, i can hardly enjoy it as it's still some instagib CoD like feeling where all and everything explodes in the matter of seconds no matter how much tank gear and most games are decided ~10 min into the game.... However, if games weren't was stomp fests with everyone explodeing, i doubt it would be as verastile as it is, since adc are still overlords in hte late, especially with a proper fron't line. So if games wouldn't regulary end befor lategame, adc would still be mandatory.

As a mid main , I can say , what you mentioned was completely right , but you never talked about Top lane , Top lane has the same problem as mid when it comes to ganks , as for mid lane , the meta gap is huge , so if you play a non meta champion , you are legit trolling , you must play a Mobile mid laner and as for bot lane , I strongly disagree , especially that everyone comes bot , and the top laner will always save his tp for bot lane , and if the enemy Top laner is Shen? hehe your bot is completely lost , I hate this but , as a mid lane main , I always MUST roam bot or I'm reported , and I always have to follow the enemy mid laner who camps in bot the whole time seriously playingLux against Zed means you will never be able to save your bot lane , or playing Ahri vs Fizz or Irelia means you will never be able to help bot lane , why ? because you already used your 3 ult dashes to run from a LeeSin gank , what makes games bad lately is the 4 men diving your bot lane and kill them then get the first tower and the snowballing starts , the real fun role to play is jungle , you always insta win lanes by ganking , of course it's not an easy role especially if you get jungle countered and your lanes are losing so you can't even gank , and it's really frustrating when your Top laner gets ganked twice in row , so he gets tilted and starts feeding but you can't do anything , but it still the most impacting role imo

Nyarlathοtep

Brand was always fine at bot.
