reminder to the riot devs: champion self slows feel like shit to play with.

putting self slows into champion kits as a lever for balance and counterplay is something that started already a long time ago, when garen was supposed to get a 30% self slow on his spin for hitting enemy champions with the juggernaut update.

luckily back then we were able to convince riot repertoir to replace the mechanic with a generally reduced spin damage, and a higher value against isolated targets instead to give opponents the ability to play around lane minions.

recently this worrying trend has been resurfacing with the rammus mini update and urgots rework.

while putting self slows into champion kits might make sense from a balance perspective, please keep in mind that it is probably one of the worst possible mechanics to play with. when youre playing a champion with a self slow on one of his abilities, youre feeling like youre gimping yourself for doing what youre supposed to do.

so please keep in mind to use mechanics like this very sparingly in champion kits, if at all. in my personal opinion, there are usually alternative solutions to create counterplay, just like riot repertor managed to do with garens spin.

This is true, the new slow on rammus w especially feels awful to play, ccing yourself is not fun......

Urgot's is fine. Rammus' is not.

Especially when everything in his kit was nerfed relative to his old kit outside of the slow being added on his R.

Urgot is only slowed when firing in his W though. And it's the reason frozen mallet is in his recommended item list.

yea, but its still a mechanic that appeared twice now in short succession on two different champions.

and honestly, urgot is still kindof in the shitter after his update. i havent seen a single one after the first couple days of his release.

mechanics like the self slow on his w, make champions feel clunky and honestly often just suck the fun out of certain abilities. same goes for rammus.

The self slow isn't what makes Urgot clunky. The delay on his dash makes him clunky.

i think the only reason the self slow kindof works in urgots case is because hes ranged.

and im not a fan of the dash to begin with. id rather hoped it would have been a melee flip like volis q, and they would have found another way to make his kit work without the dash.

Except that would require him to be in melee range.

But I loved the self slow on Gragas W :(

Riot doesn't care about Rammus. They would rather he is nerfed into the ground. In this mobility meta, why make a champ have a self slow on any ability? Because they want these champs useless.

Doesn't Galio's E have a self slow? That one feels ok, probably because it channels a ranged cc that gets bigger the longer he's slowed, and pulls enemies back to him. So I guess self slows feel ok as long as they're tied to ranged abilities that basically cancel then out if they hit. Sounds about right.
