runes need to be visible in their entirety.

with how much of an impact individual runes and rune choices can have in this game, its simply not enough to see allied/enemy keystones and rune pathes they picked.

hovering your cursor over the icons for the rune pathes should show which runes a person has picked in that path.

"did my opponent take scorch, gathering storm or water walking?..." each of those choices would be valuable information to have.

honestly i don't really care... But giving more visibility can't be anything but beneficial

It's very important, actually. You should care. It's the little things that can generate big advantages.

not really... When i play MonkeyKing against a Darius Nasus knowing they took revitalize instead overgrowth won't change anything for my lane (closly same for after).

If they took Revitalize you know you are fucked because you can't poke or sustain-fight them effectively. If they took Overgrowth you know you are fucked because they get tankier and tankier with every breath.

Either way, your frustration is now accurate as opposed to raw clunky frustration of "wtf why am i losing the trade". You instead think "oh, so this is why i am losing my trade".

Which helps you in no way but it makes your frustration seem more civilized.

So it's not important at all that it's visible then because you already know that they have to have one of those given the keystone and inability to be solo killed

This so much.

"Did this Nasus take cosmic insight or approach velocity?"

I would prefer to have my runes concealed.

op.gg functions, but I agree with this.

you could argue old masteries were similar, there were an okay amount of hidden passives/lifesteal/pen in there that would be nice to know. At least the runes nowadays are pretty obvious to tell what they have.

with the old runes and masteries, i used to do the same and checked in on my opponents builds via external sites.

but runes have even more impact these days, and are more situational than the flat stat increases of the past.

look at precision alone. the difference between someone picking presence of mind and triumph is huge.

if you knew your opponent has presence of mind, you wouldnt be confused why your opponents ult is available way too early after grabbing an assist.

if your opponent has triumph, you might factor a possible heal off an ally into your plays during teamfights.

"oh, this guy is at 10% health" as you immediately flash on him, but a teammate just died and just as youre about to finish him off, the delayed triumph proc heals him.

if an enemy is running scorch, you know he might be stronger in short trades early on, but if hes running gathering storm, you know hes probably easier to fight but you shouldnt let the game drag out for too long. if he has waterwalking, hes probably going to be stronger in situations where you contest scuttles, than he was in that lane trade 3 minutes ago.

the old runes and masteries gave like, 9 more armor, 15 more ad, 24 flat mr at lvl 18 etc.

a lot of the new runes can grant highly situational effects, which can make the same champion weaker or stronger off things like simply standing in the river instead of the lane.

This I think has been one of the contradictions of the new rune system: with each new iteration upon the mastery system, Riot wanted to create bonuses that were individually more impactful and visible, yet at the end of the day, we only get to clearly see one out of the many choices that an opponent has made. I'd support listing all runes, even if it were only accessible via some drop-down list or the like, though the issue would still remain that memorizing them, knowing how they all work, and how that will apply to gameplay, constitutes a whole lot of book-keeping, which is something Riot has said in the past that they didn't want either.

the runes are part of the game, and the book keeping is already there.

the question is now, if you want to make the runes visible to everyone, or if you make people guess what which ones their allies and opponents have chosen.

either way, you already have to play with the knowledge and possibility in mind, that those runes exist, which means you have to learn what they do either way. making rune choices visible doesnt increase the burden of knowledge at this point.

That is literally my point. The game has always had masteries, and Riot has always claimed to discourage book-keeping, so there has always been a contradiction, regardless of whether or not those masteries are visible to everyone. In this respect, allowing players to fully see each other's rune setups would be a pure improvement, even if it would not address the core book-keeping problem either way.
