Why change the runes?

I get that this new rune/mastery combination system was meant to be easier to work with, and likely made to be more impactful and simplistic as a whole but.... With the keystones of old, and new, it seems incredibly hard to balance and a HUGE power creep to the game.

I'm just bewildered why the game went in that direction, anyone have any ideas? I'm legit confused at this point.

They wanted runes and masteries to have more impact on the game as well as unique playstyles. Playing Rengar with Electrocute or Predator? And with this system it's also easier to choose path, new players had no idea what runes to buy etc. I gotta agree that I liked the old runes and masteries but I can't deny this will work in the long term. And also playing on another account and I don't have to spend 5k ip to get my preferred runes is also a very nice feature.

Well the problem with cost would have been easily solved with the implementation of them being free, and with them all being free, it would make a lot more sense to newer players. Buy and large it would just be decisions of various decisions; defense or offence, utility or durability, and early or late power.

Yeah, I just kind of feel like the new system is painfully simple and a bit overpowered in general. But hey, maybe that's just me.

It is still very confusing for newer players to work up a good rune page, in my opinion. They shouldn't have to look up a guide to have useful runes and so their decision should actually matters. No way a new player would know how to build a Rune page from scatch, and if we would make all the runes for free, it would be just chaos. I like the idea that they made Tier 3 standard runes 50% though. But then again there were a lot of bad runes which were useless. Most of my rune pages were also adapted to a certain champion and not more which forced me to have a certain champion pool or force me to buy more rune pages.

You can nicely change your runes in champ select with the new system and if you had that on the last rune system it would be cause. You could literally just buy up a lot of runes and then wait for enemy pick and making a rune page that would totally ruin them.

Edit: The amount of useless rune pages I've seen in my life.. even in higher ranks.

Thank god we have the ability to change runes on the fly. The new system offers way more options and ways to counter something. It's way better. It was obvious from the start that a lot of work had to be put into it and honestly it's not a balance nightmare. I'd say it's extremely balanced at the moment, at least compared to what it could be and what it was at some point. We're almost perfect.

Because old runes felt like they affected almost nothing in game.
