To be fair, "unranked" could mean anything from Cardboard 11 to Master tier. The likelyhood of all those unranks being that high is unlikely, but possible. Either way, RIP you my friend.
There is no match making in normal games. It is the worst thing ever. This is why I just play ranked. I don't really care about my rank, but I know Riot at least matches by tier rather than just throwing 10 completely random players together.
Your example above is not limited to just new players. That scenario happens across all of normal mode. watching a premade of 4 diamond players queue solo Q and get matched with another 4 man premade of bronze players. Yeah this is the game Riot has made.
