2.2k Hp from ult stacks alone. Ult also took half the enemy's adc in the late game and every thornmail proc did about 90 bonus damage because of the armor scaling alone.
His early is tough, that's true but when you get into the late game it's just a beautiful sight.

Tank Cho is bad, their are tanks that have better cc, dps and mobility.

I like the new Cho'Gath, but probably won't be playing him Ranked until Riot officially states whether they will be changing him any in 7.6 since that's when they said they will look at him.

So how's his damage? I get that he can get very tanky with his infinite stacking ult, but can he dispatch other tops like garen and darius or is he just there to take a beating for the team?

Honestly if you get to that point, you are going to win the game anyway. The changes to his ultimate didn't actually improve him much. They gave him a much worse early game and a slightly better late game, depending on how many champions you feast on. He needs a larger scope rework.
To counter Cho, especially tank cho, all you have to do is let him waste his ultimate on a minion and all-in him. He will lose every single time. Remember he only has a single target for feast, more than likely he will wait to use it on a champion. Wait till he uses it and then punish him.
