How many champions is too much?

A number like 1000000000 champions is obviously too much. So where exactly is the line met?

i wonder if they would rotate champs for competitive play and keep releasing new champions for fun. like limit to 100 champs for competitive. rotate it for each season perhaps.

This isn't too bad a suggestion, but they'd need to publish the list a year in advance so that players would be able to adjust if their champions get phased out. Also for this suggestion to work, they'd need at least 200 champions to make a viable 100 champ rotation. we currently have around 130 so the rotation would only be viable at 65 champion options which wouldn't be near as fun.

--And you run into the, "I paid for this champion, and I want to play with him," issue.

Ya like 100 explicitly selected for rank and everychamp available unranked. Perhaps would be on a quarterly rotation for those who absolutely want to play their champions in rank.

Or maybe something to keep in mind in the future once we hit like 175 champions we could start by limiting 25 champions per season or something. Would help with picks and bans.

Also a huge issue with having 200+ would be that when metas shift it would be DEVASTATING to the roles where it switched, imagine if the 30 mid assassins became completely pointless and for midlane i would have to completely learn another 30 champions whom are mages to be viable. (obviously an extreme example but you get the point)

200 would be a good number too put that would be stretching it.

Until there are so many champions that Riot can just focus on re-working old ones to introduce new kits rather than creating more champions for these kits.

id have to say about 150-180 because there is only so many champions a midlaner/adc/support/top/jg can learn. if it gets any higher there is gonna be insanely huge issues with balance and learning all those champions, especially the ones who are used in different roles than you play.

There is already balancing issues with the amount of champions out.

yeah but riots doing a decent job, obviously there are issues with leblanc and ekko but honestly it really isnt that bad compared to other games. I used to play only fps, so i know a thing or 2 about HUGE balance issues. and riot doesnt have them cough mw3 acr and mp7 cough made that game terrible.

They'll hit a line eventually. There's no doubt about that. But champs will get old and need reworks, so we'll never run out of new stuff.

150

150, 200 max.

I would seriously start slowing down once it even gets to 125.

Well I mean look at pokemon there's over 700 of them and they still plan on making more. Of course league isn't like Pokemon its a Moba after all, but if riot really wanted to they could go for 200 or even 300 champs even. But still that's a lot of champs that each are different in their own way and have their own unique skins, animations, kits, etc. I mean what really keeps lol so popular and fresh compared to other games really is that its constantly updating and bringing new things. Guess really only time can tell what the future brings for lol.

Yeah, but in competitive Pokemon, how many do you ACTUALLY seen being used?

Pokemon is basically a customizable ball of stats competition. There's tier lists for specific Pokemon with specific movesets, and it all comes down to number crunching.

In the end, you'll find that a couple of specific flying types are gonna just be outright better than the rest, and it's just eh.

However many that would stop Riot from being able to balance their roster. Having a lot of champs isnt really any good if only 1/4 of them are balanced at any given time.

So, at least in my opinion, we already have too many.
