Why Sunfire Cape is listed as a recommended item for tank supports?

For example, it is listed as a recommended item for Leona and Thresh. I don't know if it is also listed as a recommended item for other tank supports such as Blitzcrank Alistar or others that may be used. I don't usually play support, and when I do, I like to use non-tank supports.

That said, why is Sunfire Cape listed as a recommended item for them? This item is a complete noob trap for supports. I am not questioning whether this item is useful or efficient for champions on other lanes (it is actually really good for top lane Shen and Malphite, Shen because of his lack of waveclear, and Malphite due to him just scaling really well with armor items). However, this item should be removed from the list of recommended items for tank supports for a couple of reasons:

  1. Tank supports are not there to deal damage. Their function is to be durable and to have CC, peeling, and utility for their team.

  2. As you all know, supports should not be farming. Sunfire Cape disrupts your allies when they try to farm since the passive will be doing damage to minions. This also means that the risk of stealing farm is big.

  3. It isn't even that useful. The passive is very overstimated. In reality, this passive does not do that much damage, and as the game goes on, this item's passive fall off, especially when your enemies buy magic resistance. A single item 3190 will make Sunfire Cape do close to zero damage if purchased by tank supports, which will not even buy magic penetration. Also, it is required that your champion has ways to stick on the enemy and most tank supports can't stick on their enemies.

  4. It is outclassed by other armor items. item 3110 is a much better armor item for tank supports, thanks to its aura which is actually useful and utility oriented. item 3143 is more useful as a HP/armor item due to its passive and active. Even item 3742 is better due to allowing tank supports to engage better. Even if I were to buy a damaging armor item, item 3075 is better for that, since it doesn't require you to stick to your enemy, just to be auto-attacked.

  5. It is very gold inneficient. Not only Sunfire Cape is not worth a slot, it is also wasted gold for supports, which can't afford to waste any gold.

Well, at least that was because the old Juggernaut enchantment didn't had a Sunfire Cape passive. So you could build both items without any problems. Actually, Sunfire Cape's passive wasn't named (though there weren't any item with a similar passive).

Riot didn't bothered changing the recommended items.

On the tank support's case, Sunfire Cape is listed as a recommended item since... forever?

Before yesterday I would have agreed with you. But look at this Leona who just kicked ass in an ARAM I was in.

In ARAM it is fine to list Sunfire Cape as a recommended item for her. But on Summoner's Rift, she is mostly played as a support. I know, breaking the meta is not prohibited or anything, but the recommended items usually list only the items that are the best for the role that the champion is the most played.

I play a lot of Leona and true to be honest I can't remember ever getting Sunfire Cape because I think it's a shit item on anyone other than maybe Amumu, in addition to whoever was listed in the OP. If facing full AD, on Leona I would have:

item 2049 item 3117 OR item 3047 item 3401 item 3110 item 3143 and if the game was still going on I would honestly go with a item 3075 as a last item.

I usually get it only on top lane tanks such as Malphite Shen Zac TahmKench, also I sometimes use it on Hecarim against certain matchups where you are required to build tanky instead of building damage, such as Riven or Pantheon, due to the fact that this item provides both damage and armor and those champions are not auto-attack based so Thornmail does not work well against them (especially due to recent changes).

Other than them, though, Sunfire Cape is a very underwhelming item in general. Other items just offer much more tankyness, and dealing damage is not primarily a tank's job. Bruisers don't need to get this because they already have damage on their skills and they tend to buy items that are actually efficient and focused on damage, such as The Black Cleaver.

ARAM != Summoner's Rift.

Having a little extra damage can be pretty meaningful sometimes, and it is not a bad idea to have a support pick up some CS when it would otherwise be missed. Forget that 0 cs nonsense. Gold for your team is gold towards a win.

That honestly depends on the tank. Leona? sure. She gets up-close and personal with all her CC. Braum? No. Why the hell would you give him sunfire cape? just because he sometimes punches to get stuns? waste of money on him.

Because he has 4 unique quotes when he purchases Sunfire Cape kappa

  • "Fire does the body good."
  • "Ohoohoo, nice and toasty."
  • "I've always wanted an on-fire cloak!"
  • "Ooh! Now I need marshmallow."

(PS: He actually has those four unique quotes for purchasing Sunfire Cape. Doesn't mean that it is a good item for competitive battles, but you could get it on fun, casual battles just for the sake of hearing the unique quotes)

After the nerfs to Frozen Heart I would actually say that Sunfire is far preferable to Frozen Heart against most comps. Frozen Heart doesn't really help you get any tankier unless the enemy team relies fully on auto attacks. Any mage will burst a low income support down if they don't stack health early. That said it's not that good of a rush when compared to certain other items.

Right now I'd rush Zeke's on basically every support regardless of the playstyle just because of how strong that item's passive is. After that on tank supports I'd always pick up a health item. Deadman's Plate isn't that great on supports as they don't really have a hard time sticking onto champs as their cc is pretty high. That leaves Sunfire and Randuin's if I want armor and Locket if I want magic resist.

Also I usually pick it up on Leona with a Locket of the Iron Solari just so I can run around telling people to "Praise the Sun!"

Frozen Heart is not good just for its aura. It also comes with 20% cooldown reduction and 400 mana. Many supports are mana hungry, and the 20% cooldown reduction is just too good to pass up. With Frozen Heart + Face of the Mountain + Locket of the Iron Solari, you can easily achieve 40% cooldown reduction.

I guess that the problem of a mage being able to easily kill a support if they don't have health is a problem. The solution: try to itemize against the enemy that is fed the most.

I actually never finish Face of the Mountain as I find the shield to be too small to consistently be relevant and it only saves at best one person a game, and I'd rather get something with resistances early because raw health is very poor defensively. Also Of the 3 support items Talisman is by far the best so I usually end up building that on supports at some point.

As for Frozen Heart yes I know it's fairly gold efficient. However I really find issues with mana on tank supports unless I'm playing Blitz or Alistar. As for dealing with mages, most of the standard ap mids currently have high enough bases that as long as they aren't behind I'm levels they can force tanks that are rushing Frozen Heart out of a fight with one rotation. They don't have to be the most fed to take out a solid chunk of your health, that's why I hate rushing Frozen Heart unless it's going to hose 3 or more enemy champs

The recommended items were made a long time ago. Sunfire used to be good before there were a ton of other choices for tank supports(item 3401 item 3800 item 3742 item 3050...Also sunfire got nerfed a good bit).

I wouldn't say that Sunfire was good... It just that tank supports were lacking in options, and due to this and the fact that Sunfire Cape did a lot of damage, it was a viable option for supports back then.

But nowadays... there is absolutely no reason to use Sunfire Cape over the ton of other options we have.

Ive said it before, sun fire is good for duelling.
