I don't understand why Cho'Gath is getting banned now

Estrogen Rider··26 votes·6,500 views

He's still the same Cho'Gath as he was before - slow without escapes, unreliable, and can get bullied easily due to being melee. That rupture is one of the hardest things to land and is still one of the hardest things to land.

So I don't understand. Why is he all of a sudden considered OP?

It's possibly due to his ability to hard-counter burst assassin's with his sustain, silence, and large health growth... Which makes him a good counter-pick to some popular picks but it's hard for me to see how he's "OP."

If anything, he counters the tank meta. +Tanks are too slow to dodge his shit. +Tanks are vulnerable to true dmg. +As tanks counter assassins, more tanks = less assassins = more skill-shot champs emerge.

His ult isn't really noticeable against tanks though

Depends on the Feast stacks, AP and what the target has in a means of health.

Henceforth, Urgot fucks with the Meta once more.

So he's op because he counters 12 year olds?

Goodest Gamer12 votes

he was never weak before, there was just better champs around. now that league of tanks is here, every single annoying tank with % hp or true damage comes out ex. chogath.

Solidair311 votes

"the same as he was before"

This is the exact reason that he, or any rarely played champion, crops up once again as powerful and hard to deal with. When a champion's natural counters get nerfed, they RISE UP and become powerful once again. We saw this with Katarina when mana regen was nerfed across the board.

Penguin Eclipse10 votes

Same reason Syndra was after sitting at a 2% pick rate for more than a year, became "brokenly OP" and then got nerfed again to 3% winrate despite never actually being OP. This community is heavily dominated by sheep.

Just hope he doesn't get nerfed like she did.

As a long time Cho'Gath player, let me try to break it down for you.

Cho'Gath's passive alows him to lane vs pretty much anyone due to the sustain. When maxed first his w offers very reliable poke which also shuts down any spell based counter attack due to the silence. He has excellent pushing power because E gives him manaless AOE His R alows him to get tanky without investing too much in tankiness With any amount of AP his R does more true damage to monster than a lvl 18 smite giving him great dragon/baron control His Q is one of the strongest cc abilities in the game (ranged malph ulti with 60% slow attached on a 9 second cd)

He has always had these things but two recent changes have pushed him into the limelight: First his ulti was changed so that the cd is cut in half when he uses it to kill a minion or jungle monster. This change made him a more forgiving champion, because it allows him to stack back up his HP after dying.

Secondly with the addition of Cinder Hulk tanks came roaring back into the game. Now cho'gath doesn't benefit from this directly, because his jungling is still underpar because his ganks rely on hitting his Q which is easy to dodge. But when tanks come back so do lategame tank shredding adcs, and in the late game cho'gath is one of the very very best champions for peeling for an adc. His easy to hit silence shuts down assassins. His Q is easy to use for peel because you just place it under your adc and any melee champ jumping on him is screwed. His R gives true damage burst to help remove anybody diving on your adc, and as long as you are standing on top of your adc (which is where you should be), you don't have to worry about the short range because they will come to you. On top of all this a fully stacked Cho'Gath has possibly the largest hitbox in the game, so you can body block skill shots for you adc all day long.

Strategies are discovered and metas change. It's normal.

He's getting banned because of his mid, not really his jungle or top. He counters the assassins that are still frequenting mid lane. Once he gets Rod of Ages and Feast stacks, they can't kill him in lane, and if they try to roam, he knocks their tower down.

Only mid players would ban Cho right now.

Robert Smith6 votes

His Q scales 100% with his AP so it does about 800 damage. And when done right his ult does 1000 true damage to champions and 1500 to monsters, i.e. baron and dragon. With him on the team stealing dragon is impossible to do since his ukt out scales smite

Neo Metalsonicv22 votes

His ult deals like 920 true damage in the late late game at level 16 if you have a rabaddon's deathcap and a rod of ages. His ult outscaling smite was intentional it has been like that forever.

Also his ult has a very short range, especially for level 16. You aren't just going to catch a squishy AP or ADC at that stage of the game and most ADC's can kite him and outsustain him at that point usually having a banshees already as well. Also other AP ults are better like that of Cassio which scales very well or morganas or any AP mid that scales like a beast. Katarina can easily deal 2.5k total magic damage to an enemy team with just a well placed ult at that stage. It is not really overpowered, if he was so overpowered his winrate would be higher.

His Q is also hard to place, and if you got 100 magic resist it deals half the damage. It deals more like 320-440 damage later on. Not to mention you often need an initiate from another champion to get it off properly, or the enemy team is positioned poorly (in which case other champs such as anivia or morgana would have destroyed them as well).

And i hope chogath wont ever be changed. Even through i play aginst chogath from time to time, i dont think that he is too strong. And only because he counters f****** asassins he shouldnt get nerfed. I mean look at Veigar, he was ok and countered many assasins, but riot didnt liked that... goddamed...

For a while we had a Bruiser meta in the toplane.

Shyvana had very strong dueling, innate %HP damage, and great chasing, she countered the meta.

Riot was too dimwitted to see what was going on and slammed her with the nerfbat.

RIP Shyvana. RIP Cho'Gath (coming soon).

Cho'gath has always been strong with broken AP ratios. He is just like Poppy where he is super powerful, but never picked. So there is no point for Riot to nerf these strong champs if they are never picked.

Bullied in lane? Seems legit. Cho'gath is like the most passive motherfucker in lane that you can't stop from farming

Old Man Teeto4 votes

Let me tell you a story... one of wonder and excitement and fear of the void. I'll take you back several years to when Cho'gath was a common pick.

Cho'gath was sought by teams for his utility, durability, and great burst damage. Picked and banned, top and jungle, he was seen through the rift. On one fateful game by CLG.eu, the kill score was tied at 50 minutes in! A whopping close game at zilch kills per team. Spectators cheered as they cleared wards, hoping for some action before they got bored.

But what could be seen? In the top lane above! A caitlyn was caught, and knocked high above! Cho'gath screamed at the Caitlyn with glee, SILENCE she would be! When all through the rift all the creatures scratched their heads as Caitlyn flashed and netted to safety. Cho'gath's team poorly placed, their summoner's burnt, to get that one catch they had apparently failed. That Caitlyn had been nailed, but a glitch saved her.

Overlapping CC, gave you a frame to react, letting her escape. Teams through the world, stopped with the Cho, and went to other's less prone for this fate. We saw it again, in a game with Yasuo last season. Many people screamed it was the reason for the loss, but Riot simply glossed over the incident as they must for PR.

When a few patches later, they changed their code, got CC lapping to work properly. In the process they broke Riven's Q, and let her auto attack while she jumped too. Now Cho'gath is back, and he wants his fill, beware the void terror for he's out for a kill!

Neo Metalsonicv23 votes

People can't play Morgana, Cassiopeia, Anivia and Malzahar mid.

Instead they keep instant locking first picking Katarina, Zed, Lissandra and Ahri and complain about getting counterpicked by Cho'Gath.

Why wasn't he picked before? Because Ahri was popular and had more dashes. Orianna and Syndra were extremely strong and outranged cho often stunning him so he couldn't really do anything. Long range champions in general scaled better into late. It is more or less the meta if people would take the champions I listed as the first thing he is a lot worse.

Also some junglers with long range initiates screwed him over in lane quite a bit and he was easy to camp with someone like Vi, Lee or Jarvan. Preventing him from getting stacks and dying. But they are not much of a problem anymore since they are outclassed in the jungle and barely viable.

PerishSoftly3 votes

Cho is actually my favorite pick to deal with Malzahar mid. One thing you can do in the early levels is move in and deliberately eat his E before it bounces to more minions. Do this, sustain with your passive, and suddenly Malz is out of mana because he can't mana sustain against you.

junglerboy163 votes

I love these threads "why is X OP? Nothing has changed!"

EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED.

Just because Cho'gath's personal stats have not changed (even though they actually have, those feast buffs are a big deal), does not mean everything else hasn't changed around him. The meta has shifted significantly in favor of immobile tanky champions, and Cho'gath can also reliably CC and burst enemy team when he can chain CC with his allies. Everything about his kit is suited to the current meta, so even if his kit is relatively unchanged in the past year or more, he still has moved from a fringe pick to a prominent champion because of his synergy with the meta and other meta champions.

colesy2 votes

he sustains well enough that he can just ignore poke, an easy to aim silence makes it almost guaranteed to hit a rupture (gl trying to use skills while silenced), the slow afterwards makes you an easy target for him to ult. I just ban him out because his laning is obnoxious to play against and the fact that he both becomes tanky later on and being caught in a team situation by the silence is basically just lights out for you.

Scrimshäw2 votes

I've been banning Cho'Gath 1/50 games for about two years. I really fucking hate how he can miss all of his skillshots and just do 600 true damage to you with one point and click.

Minrog2 votes

It's about lane sustain and survivability. One year ago all the mids were long range AOE waveclear types who could spam over and over with spells (Ziggs, Xerath, Orianna, ect) or their hard counters (Leblanc, Zed, Fizz, ect). Once they wrecked mana regen values it pushed out a bunch of those choices and you're seeing chaampions in mid who can ignore mana (Cho'Gath, Lissandra, Kennen, Zed, Urgot, ect).

I don't think Cho'Gath is OP unless he's matched up against an assassin. I'm guessing that the bans against him are noob stompers like Akali and Katarina, in which case those bans totally make sense. He still is real squishy when he doesn't build tank and if he loses his stacks in the late game it hurts him a lot.

2.5 silences and knockup. He has obvious weaknesses though.

hes a niche counterpick to diana in lane and maybe picks like irelia top

but thats bout it, most assassins, even diana and irelia, can just outroam cho, he doesnt even destroy turrets that fast.

Really boring to lane against, impossible to snowball against. Maybe that's why. Personally I don't think he's ban worthy, though he's certainly not fun for me.

bluegolisano1 votes

Perhaps they are referencing those morons in Bronze V who can't pick for crap and get lucky?

Biffolo1 votes

It is due to a couple things. He has one of the best secondary engages in the game, that also COULD function as a primary engage in some really weird scenarios I guess. He also is beefy enough to laugh at most assassins while still dealing pretty solid damage. Also, the true damage ulti helps deal with OTHER tanks, or even beefier mid laners. The silence also can make it difficult for people to backline dive his carries.

SouL1ess1 votes

Doran's Ring + His passive means that Feral Scream has effectively 60 mana cost while dealing unavoidable 280 damage and silence if you get close to him. Basically it's the same thing as Talon mid. When he comes up to silence mages/assassins, they mostly can't respond and Cho will go back to his safe position.

For a champion who should be mana gated, things that fix his mana issues makes him immediately stronger.

His natural tankness also means that if you all-in him it is difficult to kill him, yet if you only do skirmishes, he has much better resource sustain than you do.

Rupture is much easier to land now because the skill animation sequence is now this:

1)Cho stomps the ground 2)After a brief delay, the indicator for rupture appears - 0.2 seconds 3)After a brief delay, rupture activates at the targeted area - 0.4 seconds

It's way too late to dodge if you dodge just as you see the indicator. You have to move out of the way by premonition, not by reactive dodging.

I don't think he is OP, but I do think there are things that made him stronger and somewhat painful to deal with in lane.

R1101 votes

1)Cho stomps the ground 2)After a brief delay, the indicator for rupture appears - 0.2 seconds 3)After a brief delay, rupture activates at the targeted area - 0.4 seconds

Pretty sure that after the stomp the indicator appears where after 0.6 seconds the rupture activates.

League is like rock paper scissors. When paper is played a lot, more scissors come out. When more scissors come out, rock is played more. When rock is played more, paper is played a lot. Etc.

The meta is shifting so that Cho is strong right now. That's all.

Orangesilk1 votes

He started being picked in competitive play along with Urgot, that is literally the only reason why this community picked him up, seriously, true story.

Two months ago people were complaining about Zed and I'd go "Hey, why not bring Cho'Gath to the midlane?, silence and sustain really wreck his stuff" and I got tomatoes thrown in my general direction.

Now that it has been competitively proven, people say "Cho is OP because his sustain and silences really counter the assassin playstyle that Zed had been bringing to the table for the last months". And I can't help but roll my eyes.

The nerf to hyperaggressive junglers really helped him though, his slow escapeless ass is more threatened by Vi, J4, Lee Sin and Rek'Sai than it is by Amumu, Sejuani, Nautilus and so on. It also helps that rupture is impossible to land on it's own, but with a Mumu or Sej initiating, it becomes easy as pie AND a brutal CC chain.

ProfDrDeath1 votes

The reason Cho sees bans nowadays is not top lane Cho nor jungle Cho, which are both reasonably powerful.

No, the reason Cho sees bans lies in the mid lane, where he is one of the more powerful picks currently. His main power there lies in him countering assassins, between his high health pool, silence and strong counterburst if you move in onto him. Also, he works decently against poke-based champions, due to his sustain.

However, there are quite a few things you can use against Cho'Gath, once you learn about his downsides:

1st, and most importantly: Stay mobile. Dodge the Ruptures. They hurt. In more than one way.

2nd, and this is the same more top and mid Cho: Any Cho lane is more like a farm lane than a kill lane. If you have the chance, use a champion that scales well with lots of farm, like Karthus (just don't channel Requiem in plain sight, please) or Anivia (bring MS quints and 3 points in the utility MS). Or use a champion that has equal or even higher sustain than Cho, i.e. Morgana (also, doesn't get as screwed by Rupture). Third possibility is a tank-buster mage, like Malzahar (don't use ult if Rupture is below you) or Brand.

3rd possibilty is to use a non-traditional mid laner. Like Tryndamere.

4th, don't try to kill him alone.

5th: Don't play Katarina .

Tank meta and Cho'Gath has the right utility to win a fight.

AOE silence AOE Knock-Up Immense damage that is more than enough to get rid of more than half a squishy's health. Not necessarily melee. And his passive keeps him in lane.

Honestly, you have to have a champion with mobility and peel to fight him 1 on 1 these days.

Meta shift. Hes a strong pick due to current roster of popular champions everythings been nerfed around him. Tanks dont pressure early like bruiser junglers did so his weakest phase the really early laning phase isnt weak anymore. It all adds up

Because we are in bronze and some people saw some golds and plats use him effectively and decided to starts using him. They found out that he works well against some of the popular picks and so started doing well themselves. Now everyone in our bronze elo whom has seen a cho do well wants to ban him to prevent. Sometimes they want to use him instead thinking they can get an easy win. It's all because we are in bronze and some fools saw someone do well with him and thought they could too.

As a Cho'Gath player main I am quite angered my chogath got nerfed :( They took force of nature, elsias miracle and heart of gold away from me... RIP FON!

BTW, chogath is all about mind games. You must not only outpoke your opponent in lane, but out sustain him to keep poking. Landing his Q is all about learning your opponents foot work. If he steps back when you go in to melee him or land a w, place the Q behind them. Or just build Rylaiis to slow ( his E procs the effect too) :) Cho'Gath is a great champion, but under played in my honest opinion.

Lugg1 votes

With the new patch, he is now one of the strongest champs in the game due to the high tier champs being nerfed. Plus he is pretty toxic and players don't want to deal with him.

If you are a Cho main, you should push for a nerf so you can actually play him again.
