Why does Duskblade's passive deal true damage?

First reason why it doesn't really make a lot of sense is because you'll must likely get Duskblade in a penetration stacking build, which means that all the penetration you have is wasted on the true damage, since true damage takes armor out of the equasion completely.

Then there's the fact that true damage is something you want to have against armor stacking targets like tanks and bruisers while flat armor penetration / lethality is something you want to get against targets that DON'T stack armor, so basically squishy carrries, because of the way diminishing returns work.

I think it would make much more sense if it would deal physical damage which would make it fit better in a lethatlity/ armor penetration build. Of course the flat values would have to be higher than right now to make up for the fact that it wouldn't be true damage anymore.

What this would mean is that it would be less effective against bruisers and tanks which the assassins who build it don't really want to deal with in the first place anyway and much more effective against squishy carries, especially marksmen.

I think it might just need that change because most high elo players don't seem to build it, even on champions like Kha'Zix which in theory should be one of its ideal users.

The passive is meant to be a bonus, it's not meant to be the main source of damage.

Duskblade is also pretty solid right now so it does not need changes.

The true damage duskblade does scales with the amount of lethality you have built, so you need to stack flat armour pen to get the most of it.

Second of all, flat true damage dealt in a burst (as opposed to Master Yi's which is consistent and on-hit) is better against squishies than it is against bruisers or tanks. A tank with 5,000 health will barely feel like 200 true damage. The ADC will have just lost 1/10th of its health from the true damage alone.

Now imagine it would be physical and more in total, the tank would feel it even less while the squishy feels it more. I often see marksmen who don't build any armor outside of armor seals, which means that in most cases a full lethality build would deal true damage anyway with all the flat pen you have.

  1. because the damage from duskblade is either pathetic or overkill since all the damage you'll need is already in the champion kit and that's just a nice addition
  2. true damage is a fixed number, so it can be a small number without being reduced by armor and this way it can also work on low hp targers (such as a carry) without getting messed up while attacking a tank

I'm not sure what high elo you're looking at, but I can't think of a single AD assassin that doesn't build it at this point as a 4-5 item. You may not see it often because assassins aim to snowball the game early before damage falls off, but even if the game ends before they pick it up it's still part of the core build.

The duskblade true damage is meant to be an reliable damage burst in the mid-late game because there's so much damage mitigation available by that point. it's not a very good as one of your first three items because it's so dependent on having lethality stacked up, but it's definitly a core part of every assassin's burst pattern as the game gets later.
