@Riot I don't think the Mordekaiser rework is successful
He feels extremely one-dimensional right now and pigeonholed into buying tank items
His passive is just.. not decent unless you're grabbing multiple health items. Which I personally feel to be counter-intuitive at times, because his shield scales better with resistances. I think the ratio of health should be brought down, but a small base amount added. This lets tank builds still scale well defensively, but more offensive builds have a chance to stay useful.
I don't like his new Q at all. The multiplying damage is frustrating to go up against for most people I've come across ("Oh, he's losing the trade-- jk he just took half my health") and the short timer to get it off combined with needing the third hit to get the damage off is frustrating for Mordekaiser himself. The loss of it being AoE made it a lot less interesting -- I personally found the isolation effect to be very interesting, and there was a valuable trade-off for it either way. If I hit them when they're alone, then I get less shield, but more damage. If I hit them in a clustered fight or in the minion wave, I get more shield but less damage. It was strong and reliable. That's why I liked Mordekaiser -- he was reliable. Not so much anymore. If I'm dealing with a ranged champion, I have to burn a summoner flash in order to get my damage off or build a bunch of items I don't actually want otherwise, or sink a LOT of gold into
or
. AP Mordekaiser has to invest more damage in order to outscale AD.
I would much rather have his old W. The armor/MR steroid made me and my shield more durable, which let me be a little more generous with damage items. It lasted 6 seconds which gave me more DPS unless I have someone sandwiched between myself and an ally right now. The heal is just bad design; it lets him shrug off any damage that might've gotten through his shield in 2v2 lanes, and he's rewarded even more than he was before for standing in the middle of a minion wave. In a solo lane, this is not the case; he has no means of providing either the defensive ability or the sustained damage that it used to. This is probably a contributing factor to why his Q has to be so powerful. Further, the lack of having this really only hurts his AP build; his AD is relatively unaffected and can go without it for a good part of the game. (I, for example, only take it at level 7 or 8 when going mid) I think the reactivation thing is cool though.
I actually like the change to his E. It's probably the only ability right now I can say was both well thought out and well executed. The 15% for each champion hit allows tank and AD builds to charge his shield up quickly, and his AP build doesn't suffer. The base damage was probably too high for an ability that you really can't miss. However, I do not like that they compensated it for more damage at the expense of its reliability.
The dragon ghost is stupid. Please don't ever tie a champion's power to a monster objective unless it's somehow able to be reliable. It makes him even more snowball-heavy than he was before, because if he kills anyone at bot or mid, he can go with his jungler and get an even better ghost that feeds into his stats. Even more frustrating, this is yet another incentive to just not play Mord top in light of everything else. I don't want any stat tweaks; please, please, get rid of this and let that power go to the rest of his kit. I'd even be happy not even having his ghost's stat nerfs reverted if you got rid of it. So many times of playing him that I lose my ultimate, and then dragon's busy bugging the fuck out in the jungle. It doesn't even work on non-SR maps, so he loses it if he decides to play TT or Dominion.
tl;dr I feel frustrated even when I'm doing well with this champion, I miss being able to build tanky AP and do well. A short list of suggestions;
-
Take out some of Q's scaling, but make it 2 hits and either the second hit or both hits AoE, either by prework's standards or hitting as a cone/circle.
-
Make his W usable by itself. I would really prefer it being reverted to past functionality, but I'll settle with just being able to use it myself in order to sustain. Since, you know, you gave
a heal and he's still allowed to lane by himself, what's the harm? -
Remove the dragon ghost, adjust his stats as needed
I want to know if Riot had an underlying goal for him, though. I don't think this is a success if the goal was to make him healthier, but if they only wanted to make him a low mobility, high damage tank, I guess it worked out?
