Hello everyone. Doozku here back again with another tips and tricks video for Call of Duty: Global Offensive. This time, I'm going to teach you how to play the brand new Dota hero, Kayne West. I'm sure many of you are eager to first time Kayn in ranked, in which case fuck you I'm going to give you several tips and tricks that you should know before throwing away elo you begin carrying games as Kayn. For real though, this is all just information that I have gathered from playing this champion on the PBE and analyzing his kit. Its likely that half of the information her becomes outdated once pros and players of much higher skill than I start getting their hands on this champion and start discovering the meta for him.
#Pre-Game and Champion Select
Kayn is a highly versatile champion. His ability to fill the role of an Assassin, or a frontline Bruiser-Juggernaut lets him fit into any team comp, and makes him perfect for a first pick. This also makes him a good champion to main, since he can essentially be picked into any game as long as you pick the right form. Speaking of picking the right form, its important to decide what form you are going to choose before getting into the game. This is because Kayn's two forms both benefit from two different runes and mastery setups. Darkin form loves Fervor for the extra sustained damage and dueling potential. SA (Shadow Assassin) form prefers Thunderlords for the extra burst. That being said, neither form rely on their keystone, and if you decided on playing SA but the game turned into a match where Darkin is preferred, then you should go for that form, regardless of keystone.
#Early Game Now I know you guys are eager to stick your sharp, talking scythe up that cocky Riven's ass, but don't get too excited yet. When you start the game, you are going to be base Kayn. Let's get this out of the way first. Base Kayn sucks. He just sucks. He has the worse of both forms without any of the benefits. His mobility is mediocre, his sustain is almost non-existent, his only cc is a shitty slow, and his damage is extremely meh. You are going to want to make the form change extremely quickly. The best way to do this is to gank, gank, gank!. You are going to mainly want to focus the lane that will get you to the form that you want. I'd recommend focusing lanes that have the same range type (fighting type? Whatever the term is that determines whether you are melee or ranged.) as the strongest member of the enemy team. This is because Darkin form is much better at fighting any kind of melee champion, where as SA form is extremely good at assassinating squishy ranged champions. (Of course there are some exceptions. A tanky Gnar will probably be better dealt with in Darkin form, where as squishy assassins and skirmishers can probably be oneshot with assassin form.). However, just because you want to focus a lane in particular, doesn't mean that you should be ignoring other lanes and focusing this one lane in particular. You gain essence by fighting an enemy. It doesn't even have to be a kill, as long as you come and fight them, you will get essence. This is why you want to gank as much as you can. The more you gank, the quicker you get to your evolution. Don't be too worried if you don't get your preferred evolution. Once you unlock the ability to evolve, there will be a timer on your screen that will show how long it will take to evolve to the other form, which usually starts at 5 minutes. This timer goes down the more orbs you collect of the corresponding type, so focus on farming the orbs for your right form! Now there are two more rules to playing the early game as Kayn.
- DO NOT FALL BEHIND
- DO NOT FOCUS ON POWER-FARMING
These rules are extremely important. You want NEED to get your transformations as soon as you can in order to escape the immense mediocrity that is my life base Kayn. If you fall behind on Kayn, you will delay your evolution further, which will leave you worse off as enemies begin to get stronger while you are still stuck as base Kayn. Same goes for power-farming. All that gold that you are going to get wont matter when you are still stuck as base Kayn while everyone around you is considerably stronger. Sure, its fine to not gank if you don't see an opportunity to, but there continues to be a lack of chances to gank, just straight up force a fight/gank. It doesn't have to be successful. You only need to fight an enemy to get orbs off of him/her, it doesn't have to be a kill. Invading is also a viable option. Just be wary that many junglers will probably have the power to outduel you, so your E is your best friend in this case.
#Picking a Form I know I've droned on and on about forms, so I'm going to make this one brief. I've compiled a list of the best traits of both forms so that you can decide for yourself which one you are going to pick. Just keep in mind that this decision should be made on a case by case basis. DO NOT DECIDE TO ONLY EVER PLAY SA OR DARKIN FORM. YOU MIGHT AS WELL JUST PLAY A DIFFERENT CHAMPION. I WILL HURT YOU IF YOU DO THIS. AND BY HURT YOU I MEAN EMOTIONALLY :-(. And now that that's out of the way, let's get into the forms
Shadow Assassin Form:
- AD Assassin
- Very good at Assassinating ADC's and mages.
- Insane roaming potential thanks to increase movespeed on E coupled with ooc msp gained from building Youmuus and mobis
- Good at dueling and split pushing
- Solid mobility, although not great
- Insane burst damage thanks to passive which refreshes on ultimate (SA's passive is really fucking good)
- Has really good stick and chase potential thanks to increased range on W and R especially.
- Not having a cast time on W allows you to unload your full combo much, much faster (INSANE FULL AD KANYE ONESHOTS? IS THIS UNFAIR? ~~WILL RIOT NERF THIS CHAMPION INTO THE GUTTER BEFORE REWORKING HIM 4 TIMES UNTIL THEY DECIDE TO NERF HIM INTO UNEXISTENCE? ~~ im sorry i had to)
- Mediocre sustained damage (his sustained damage is essentially the same as base Kayn after you blow your ultimate.)
- Extremely squishy
- Very bad if falls behind
- Has difficulty dealing with tanks
Darkin Form:
- Tanky Diver/Juggernaut Hybrid
- Very Tanky but still deals good damage
- Low Cooldowns and good %hp damage gives you strong sustained damage and dueling potential
- Has a good, easy to land AOE knockup on a moderately short cooldown
- Has insane healing
- HAS FUCKING LUDICROUS HEALING
- All of the above combined with the strong escape he gets with his E turns him into an incredible split pusher. You are tanky as hell, have solid mobility, have good damage, good sustain, and to top it all off, if the enemy starts to look for you and begins chasing you, you can always hop through 3 walls and get away.
- Has a solid teamfight as well, with the ability to peel for carries and deal good damage to the frontline as well as the backline, combined with insane healing and sustain.
- Fairly easy and forgiving in comparison to SA (Isn't gated by important cooldowns. Get's incredibly tanky with insane lifesteal which makes him very forgiving.)
- Still viable if you fall behind thanks to %hp damage and tankiness
- Great at dealing with tanks
- Very Mediocre to bad mobility, especially when compared to other Divers like Vi or Renekton (which is why he is part Juggernaut.)
- Can be shut down hard by any form of Grievous wounds
- ADC's can shred you and kite you to hell if you let them.
#Tricks and Tips to playing SA form
- Your passive is really fucking good
- Your passive is really fucking good
- Your passive is really FUCKING good
- Seriously though, do not underestimate this passive. This is the reason why SA form is a better Assassin than Darkin form. Late game, this passive can give your burst combo a 50% DAMAGE INCREASE OF THE OPPOSITE DAMAGE TYPE THAT YOU SCALE OF OFF.. That is ridiculous and combined with the roam potential of your E and the speed given to your burst combo thanks to the W makes this one hell of a form to be scared of.
- You can cast your W and Q at the same time. This makes your burst combo insanely fast and lets you oneshot ADC's nearly instantly. Your burst combo is now E to them if you have to > WQ > Auto Attack them until they throw a key spell or have/are about to dash away > R them to dodge spell > Q them. However, most targets will die from just the WQ > Auto Attack, or maybe even the WQ if you are fed enough.
- Escaping as Assassin form is a matter of using your ultimate properly to stall enough time for you to get away with Q's and W's, or to possibly even E out if you get to stall long enough (although this likely won't happen)
- Getting Mobi's and the new Youmuus is actually extremely powerful and fun on SA form when combined with the extra speed you get from your E. You can dash around the map and get from place to place faster than my original character Jeffery the slightly obese yet still semi-quick Hedgehog.
#Tricks and Tips to playing Darkin form
- Split Push hard and often. Your sustain coupled with your damage and tankiness will require the enemy team to send multiple people to deal with you, that you can often deal with. But even if they send your whole team at you, you can just E away and they will never catch you. These two things are going to make what I believe is going to be one of the best split pushers in the entire game. The only thing he lacks is the insane damage and tower taking potential.
- If you are gonna be split pushing, consider getting a Zzrot to help with turret pressure, although I would not recommend it as until around 4 items.
- In teamfights, you want to focus on peeling off and killing people who try to kill your ADC. However, you are also extremely good at starting fights and diving thanks to your E and W, as well are your incredible healing. Crucial timing of your ultimate is critical when diving, as it can mean the difference between life and death.
- Don't overestimate your sustain in earlier levels. You still don't have the maximum healing from your passive, nor do you have important items like Spirit Visage which increase your healing.
- Your ultimate healing is massive at all stages of the game, and its damage is really strong as well. Rhaast's version of the ultimate is super versatile and probably the best form of said ultimate.
- If you want more damage, DD or Titanic are really solid choices. Titanic gives you more health and the active gives incredible burst, especially if you already have a ton of health. DD gives you more general damage and both of its passives seem made for this champion. The damage reduction makes you even more tanky and gives you more time to life steal off damage, while the extra lifesteal is self explanatory.
#Tricks and Tips to using Shadow Step
- On top of the mobility it gives you, this ability also oddly gives you healing when you enter a wall. This healing is actually extremely useful, especially as SA or standard Kayn, as it is the only sustain in their entire kits. You can use it while farming the jungle for some extra healing, but keep in mind that using it will greatly harm your ganking ability for a long while, since the cooldown on this spell is long at early ranks. You can also use this in the middle of a fight for an extra burst of healing to help you win the duel.
- If you want an extra burst of healing in a chase, you can use this spell. Sure, you will only get 1.5 seconds of movespeed, but that still might be enough to get into Q or W range of the opponent in order to catch them out. This trick applies especially to Darkin form, SA form will usually have no problems finishing off his target, and would rather save the E for an escape.
- You can use spells while in Shadow Step. Use this to your advantage by W'ing through the wall and then Q'ing to your opponent through the wall. You will also clip through the wall after you cast a spell inside of the wall, which could be used as an extra gapcloser if you save your Q.
- If you are chasing with this spell, do not make the nooby mistake of walking into a wall to try and get more movespeed in a lane. This generally ends in the E ending prematurely, you spending too much time walking to the wall and therefore giving the opponent more room to escape, and generally the movespeed you gain does not make up for this.
#How to use your ultimate Using the ultimate is something I've avoided throughout this entire post because I've wanted to talk about it here. Kayn's Ultimate is one of the most multipurpose spells in the game. You can use it for damage. You can use it for healing. You can use it for mobility. You can use it for intargetability. It is just an incredible spell but you need to know how to use it properly. The uses vary for the different forms so I'm going to talk about both SA form and Darkin form. But before I begin, here's a little trick. When you use your ultimate in the middle of a fight, you almost always want to wait for the full duration of the ultimate before you hop out. Why? Because before you ult someone you need to have hit them first, and you can regenerate the CD that you spent getting to the target waiting inside of said target. You come out and most, if not all of your spells are back on CD and you can reek havoc.
##SA/Base Form I've grouped these two together as they are both fairly similar, and they both use the ultimate in very similar ways. The damage that this spell gives when in base/SA form is actually fairly pitiful. Therefore, you want to use this spell for the utility it gives. The best way to use this spell is to dodge key spells and CC's. This is critical, especially as SA form as you are very squishy and need to negate damage in order to survive. You can also use this spell as a gapcloser/chase tool, especially as SA form since both your ult and your W have increased range. You need to damage someone first before you can cast this spell, so you need to have hit your target before or you need to W them. Luckily, all of your spells are AOE so hitting some other person in a teamfight should be easy. An average teamfight as SA would look like this:
- You E around the enemy team and manage to get close to their carry.
- You WQ the carry, likely killing it instantly.
- You ult a tank or frontliner to survive the oncoming wave of shit coming to CC your edgy ass.
- You wait for your CD's to come back and then jump out. If the tank is smart and walks back into his team so that when you jump out he can catch you out, ult out immediately towards your team so that you can run out.
##Darkin Form Darkin Form's version of the ultimate is fantastic. Not only do you get to dodge spells with it, the damage has elevated from meh to fucking insane. It does about a solid 32% of the target's maximum health, and heals you for most of the amount. The healing also stacks with the healing you get from your passive, which makes the health that you gain from this spell insane. You can use this spell in the middle of duels to get a shitload of your health back and cd's back while also doing a chunk of damage to the enemy who's fighting you. In teamfights, you can use this to dodge big AOE cc's like Veigar W, but in some scenarios you might actually want to be cc'd, so that you absorb the damage for your carries. Just keep in mind that you can always just ult the tank and get your entire healthpool back from it. It's ridiculous and lets you make insane dives because of your ability to get all your health back and dodge key skillshots.

#Conclusion Kayn is probably the most versatile champion in the game, with the ability to choose between an AD Assassin or a high sustain Diver/Juggernaut. He has a lot of tricks up his sleave and is perfect for one-tricks, edgy teens, and Yasuo Mains. Thank you all for watching my HotS tutorial.
