Did Keystones actually add anything to the game?

I'll try to convey my thoughts into words as best as possible.

So, essentially I feel like keystones didn't actually add any sustenance to the game. I feel like all they added was burst and more cheese. For example, I'll use wind seekers blessing. Windseekers pushed many heal/shield supports over the edge. So lets say there was perfect balance before keystones were released and then windseekers was released and soraka suddenly went from a balanced champion to an op one. So riots like with windseekers sorakas getting 10% more heals and now heals to much, so we are going to nerf her heals by 10% thus making the whole point in the keystone just to bring her back to her former glory.

Or Syndra lets say she was balanced before thunder lords, then thunderlords made her too bursty so Riot had to nerf her abilities. now if syndra takes a different mastery she doesn't do enough damage to be useful.

TL/DR: I feel like keystones are actually super empty. I feel like they just made the game unbalanced and then Riot has slowly nerfed champions into being balanced around keystones.

this is a discussion, so lets discuss.

Sorry for how jumbled my speech is.

No not really. All they managed to do was increase average power, mostly damage considering most are centered around it, but simultaneously increase the divide between subsets of the champion pool, based on which ones could best preform the triggers for the effects.

I agree, atleast with Runes I can try new things like, running full crit runes on an adc for cheese, or running full Attack speed and movement speed runes on jhin so I can go supppa fast. but with keystones I never feel like trying new things because honestly they add no new fun aspect to the game.

Oh sure! They added a ton of things to the game.

Like, they added a lead foot on the power creep pedal - essentially an extra kit ability in the form of burst damage or survival, they added the need to alter champions who were otherwise fine without them prompting immediate nerfs to the champions and reworks to the keystones they were abusing, they added the mental image of a revolving door of who can abuse keystones better than anyone else, they added overly complex and unnecessary levers of balance that will never be fixed, they added the need to fill out a cookie cutter mastery pages just to get to the bottom - and god forbid you don't go all the way down the page, they...oh, I assume you wanted positive outcomes of the season 6 mastery update.

Umm......nope, can't identify anything great that came out of this.

It's kept the headless chickens on the balance team employed for another year.

The issue is that they both did and didn't do what they were supposed to do. Keystones were added to add strategic depth and for some champions they did. Take Taric for example. Since his rework Taric has transitioned between using all 4 different keystones we have had in the resolve tree as well as windspeakers.

While nerfs/buffs influenced these for the most part Taric has always been able to choose between them and succeed. More than that though they altered his playstyle. A windspeakers Taric plays very differently from a Courage Taric which plays differently from a Bond of Stone Taric or a Grasp of the Undying Taric.

Windspeakers and Bond both gave Taric a passive way of playing, one path rewarding a more Q/healing item focused Taric and one path rewarding a tankier but still passive Taric.

CotC and Grasp both allow Taric to play more aggressive with one allowing for short trades and the other bringing more damage and more power in long trades.

All 4 of these (5 if you count Strength of Ages for a Taric who wanted to be well rounded and late game focused.) gave Taric unique playstyles and very much succeeded in their goals of offering different ways to play a champion.

The issue is that keystones failed for many champions like Soraka who only have one that works well with them. She doesn't utilize any other keystone very well. The closest one to being useful is Bond of Stone and that is a less efficient use of her health than healing.

So Keystones have definitely helped support many champions in different build paths/playstyles but they have also shown to be so necessary on certain champions that they have to be balanced around always using that keystone.

what i really hate about keystones is that the decision is made in champ select rather than in-game. If the champ's power budget is used all on the champ's kit or items, I'd have complete control over what I need in-game. But with keystones if im falling behind, im still stuck with TLD that wont really help me play from behind, wasting the champion's power budget.

I actually feel the same. Keystones hardly improved anything on the game, they were ment to creat meanigfull choices based on personal preferences and playstyle, or atleast based on strategic apects. But for nearly all champs, there is one keystone that is optimal and they'll take that ~90%+ pf the time. Which one that is changes with the balances changes, but we rarly have two similar strong keystones for the same champ at the same patch, it's usually one beeing heavily dominateing. And the rest of the masterie tree feels pretty shallow, cause keystones eat so much of the power that lower teir masteries simply have next to no impact(especially in the resolve tree)

So other than adding alot to powercreep and distorting balance, keystones didn't actually do anything for the game so far. Honestly, same can be said about plants imo, just that they don't have as much bad impact...

They were supposed to bring "diversity".

I still can't stop laughing remembering early s6 and 10 thunderlords every game.

Sustain without having to buy it

A three hit passive for everyone

Damage over time that works even better on top of other damage over time.

rageblade the mastery

Did I mention results vary greatly form bieng basically worthless for some champs to completely breaking others and doing too good of a job covering their design weaknesses?

I see no real improvement in the game overall from their existence.

They gave a ton of free power. Giving tanks free shields, giving carries free sustain, giving assassins and mages free burst, etc. I feel like the game's been going downhill since they were released.
